Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Wayward Travelers
It's only been two months since my training began, and my father has already beat me black & blue. My skin was white as jade, it had no visible imperfections, and it surpassed the purest jade around all the heavens. It was all that, and more, but now it has been tainted with multiple incurable wounds. I have long silky brown hair that reaches the middle of my back, but my hair wasn't enough to cover the defeat etched into my skin & soul.
My swordplay was splendidly exquisite, while my Triple Slash Moonlight Heaven Destroyer technique wasn't at fault. The heavens cursed me to lose, chances are these wounds hurt me even deeper than thought.
Oh no, my inner core has been cracked, chances are my cultivation has been crippled forever. My cultivation may be shattered, but my DAO still stands firm.
'I think that's how they talked like in those books. Dad sure knows how to pick a novel. I didn't even know about the cultivation genre till he showed it to me yesterday after he beat my ass in our spar.'
Lucas spoke aloud while looking in the mirror of his closet in his room. His face was showing great sorrow as he kept talking to himself in front of the mirror. His eyes wide as the door next to him was wide open.
James walked inside the room to see his son shirtless with only a pair of black sports shorts on looking into the mirror. He had multiple bruises on his arms, legs, and chest, but none on his face.
Emma would kill me if I damaged his face in our spar.
I tried to show my son the error of his ways with the only method he could understand.
If the sounds of my words weren't effective, then the sounds of my punches would open his eyes. I made sure to show my son some real martial arts, with some actual superhuman techniques in our spar yesterday.
He had planned to beat the ignorance out of his boy all in one day, but it all backfired terribly. Lucas was crying so much yesterday, Emma's death stare didn't help either. I even gave him a few of my favorite Chinese cultivation novels to make it stop. I had hoped it would make him feel better since he loves novels. The shamanic ointment should have fully healed the wounds, but he still has his bruises.
His son had some heavy eye bags, from this alone it was clear he hadn't slept yet. Even worse was his son spewing off all those meaningless cultivation terms earlier to describe his current appearance.
'What have I done, my boy is acting like a huge cultivation freak, like the ones he heard about from his friends who use those accursed computers. They say I'm missing out, but they don't know these little machines have a very dark history with schemes going on hidden from all who use the machines.'
James frowned as he summoned a blue potion from his storage ring to stuff down his son's throat to get him ready for the next trip.
"Dad, what are you doing with that disgusting potion? You know that thing tastes like a shit sandwich, or anything you cook since it all tastes bad anyways." Lucas told his father while he had a smug expression.
'That's it, just for that you're drinking that potion if you keep this up.' James shook his head from side to side in repetition for a few seconds.
"Dad, you know you can't force that down my throat as that is torture plus, umm. It is also abusive, umm... CHILD ABUSE. Ya, that's it, if you force me to drink that potion it's child abuse + torture. So just let's use the shaman mud crap in that container by the bed to do its magic. I should be healed in 2 to 4 hours.
Lucas had washed the mud off in the shower last night before going to sleep. He felt it might stain his bed so it had to go before he went to bed. Unknowingly this caused him to only receive subpar effects.
"Child abuse, torture... Boy, I will show you both since you're asking for it." James's tone got serious as he pulled out a second red potion that healed sleepiness, mental fatigue, and physical exhaustion.
The potion's side-effects were feeling as if you were struck by lightning every second you drank it. The slower you drink it the more painful it feels. But, no matter how great the pain you had felt, it would leave no lasting damage.
The potion's effects counteract all the mental trauma and mental exhaustion felt by the pain. They would only receive scary memories that would fade in a day.
"Dad quit joking man. I was just pulling your leg, so can we call it even, and we both go our separate ways." Lucas told his dad this, but his body was slowly backing away.
'How do I get out of here?' Lucas looked around only to see his view of his surroundings change instantly.
James had pinned his son to the floor, and used his iron chains to bind his arms and legs together, his son's body made a half-moon shape. With nowhere left to run James had resummoned the potions in both hands. Red on his right, blue on his left. Soon both potions would enter his son's mouth to make purple.
"MOM HELP, DAD IS TORTURING ME, HELP ME PLEASE." 15 seconds before the potions entered his system he saw a figure appear before his eyes.
His mom had turned herself invisible the entire time. It would seem that she had followed his dad here. So while all this was happening to me she was just watching.
'She isn't stopping this, doesn't she care about me?'
Lucas's mind raced as it tried to find an answer, his last hope turned into despair. He saw his mom's face turn into a smug little smirk. The same one he had always given her when he beat her at board game night like a champ. Don't tell me she going to do the little dance as well while this all goes down.
'She is even doing my victory pose before my eyes. Why is she still watching this go down? How could I face such a betrayal from my mother.' The light in Lucas's eyes was slowly dimming.
Emma had been watching this all go down in amusement, her invisibility charm worked wonders. James had already sensed her the moment she had undone the charm, but he continued his previous actions. James acted almost like her presence empowered him.
Emma had stuck her tongue out as both arms were in the air holding a thumbs-down position. She held that pose as she made the most devious smug expression she could muster.
'That should be what his victory pose looks like if I remember correctly. My baby boy is my baby, but no one gets away with beating me at my favorite games. Then having the audacity to laugh in my face, as they say I am shit at the game I play. I won't stand for this kind of disrespect, he needs to face the music and take his punishment. He should be grateful I'm not doing that little dance of his while I watch him.' Emma thought as Lucas's face twisted in despair as he was moments away from disaster.
2 hours later. . .
"Does my baby boy have all his things?" Emma asked with her classic smile.
"I don't talk to betrayers, talk to the hand since the face doesn't wanna see ya." Lucas said as he turned away from her only showing his right hand, as his left held his pure orange suitcase.
Lucas went to the black car early, as his parents were still outside talking about things he didn't care about. Betrayers don't have anything interesting to talk about anyway.
They bought a Honda Accord but removed the radio, computers, and more from this car to make it basic.
Lucas's eyes glowed as he looked around the car to see its technology was basic, but its magical systems were more complex than the dark elite golems he tried fighting. The golems beat him in one move, but it takes ten to barely hold up with his dad's current strength for more than a minute.
The car is probably a mobile fortress by now with the amount of magic systems, and runes built into it.
"Honey, you're the one with the connections, of our choices who do we pick to get a ticket from? Flying in regular airplanes is too dangerous now, they don't have any defenses or any sort of supernatural protection in place. Our car is safer than any regular plane could ever be. Regular airplanes also take too long. A flight from San Francisco to Tokyo Japan is 10 to 11 hours. No matter who we choose it will be faster than most normal methods."
"James, we are a team, and as a team, you can't just tell your wife to do all the heavy lifting in choosing. Having your opinion is valuable alright. So no need to put yourself down due to ignorance of these subjects. " Emma replied as she kissed her husband's lips for a few seconds. She had to tippy toes, and float a bit since James was 6 '6, she was 5' 7. James was the one that needed to go down usually, but she changed her game.
"Emma, I'll try my best, but these subjects aren't my kind of skill set." James told her, he coughed a bit into his right hand, his situation felt embarrassing to him.
'I understand Emma being better than me in magic, magical knowledge in general, but why am I so hopelessly unprepared in this situation? These resources are commonly used by everyone with abilities, or knowledge on things beyond the mundane. Everyone apparently knew about these groups. it was so widespread it was just common knowledge, everyone but him apparently.' James mentally sighed.
"Here is the list James with some of my notes about the services they offer." Emma said as she gave a new list this time, the last one was just company names without details. She thought James would have known of at least a few of them, but he was clueless in that department.
'Well, James is clueless about kg, so I'll use pounds instead. Our son needs to stop using feet to meters in measuring things more often. They'll both learn eventually no need to rush the process.'
1. Hell Gate Enterprise:
A trap created by a demonic entity. All who use this service can travel anywhere in the world not warded, or protected by anything.
The cost is clearly stated in the contract. You either pay with your soul for a lifetime ticket or pay in a pound of human blood. The pound of blood is just the starting fee for one year. Hell's Gate can be activated once every hour it has a cooldown.
To renew the contract you pay double the previous year. It doubles in price every year after you start the original contract. So if you renewed the contract 20 years later when you quit at the rate of 4 pounds. It would now cost 4,194,304 pounds of human blood for 1 year.
The moment you can't pay the fee, you automatically lose your soul as collateral, and you are given 10 days to pay. If you don't complete the payment your contract ticket is now bumped up to a lifetime deal.
Beyonder Airlines:
They only accept payments in, beyond characteristics. The airline can send a sequence Six to One, depending on the grade of service you paid for. All planes taken are private, so till the moment you run out of time on your plane's use, it can be repeatedly used. Travel time tends to be shorter than human transportation, but the main focus is safety.
The other option with this service is traveling through the Spirit world, or Astral world if you need to go beyond Earth. Those who are on the Door Pathway seem to be a major player in this service.
A top player in this company is someone called Mr. Door, he seems to be a sort of manager or above in the company.
Green Whales Incorporated:
You fly in the mouth of a giant green whale-cursed spirit. While traveling it passively absorbs all cursed energy within your entire body till the day you die.
You make a binding vow with the whale to use its services. It gets a lifetime supply of cursed energy for simply taking you places. The green whale has hundreds of millions of clones. It has a binding vow where it can't attack for incredible defensive abilities. It's the same speed as the average airplane. The green whale clone becomes your personal spirit pet if you accept its contact.
Greedy Traveler:
You pay in useful unique knowledge, the more valuable the knowledge the longer your teleportation ability lasts. If the knowledge is rare enough you keep the ability for life. If the knowledge is so valuable it's impossible to value, the ability is turned into permanent bloodline ability. Its long-distance teleportation abilities can only be used once a day.
The teleportation ability can only send you to a library of your choice from around the cosmos if it's long-distance travel. Short-distance teleportation can work almost anywhere in a 5-meter radius, it can be activated once per minute.
Spirit Nodes Association :
These spirit nodes can teleport to other nodes around the cosmos if those on the other side agree, or even listen to you. Bribes can be given to increase the chance of the other side accepting. The cost is random, it can be from free to impossible fees.
Eldian Airlines:
Flights go almost anywhere, the travel time is 1.5 times faster than normal airplanes. It costs 10 times more than other services, free if you are part of that race. Mortal money isn't accepted.
"James, these six are the most stable out of the tens of thousands that I know of. Too many of them make you sign contracts with vague terms & conditions or are just a more insane version of Hell Gate Enterprise."
"Others may be better, but their reputation is either nonexistent, terribly rated by competition, or they work like a hidden society where you need to get an invite first before you access it."
"In my opinion, too many of these supernatural companies are just straight-up death traps made by demons or worse. Hell Gate Enterprise is honest about how they will kill you, other companies look nice, but they ultimately betray your trust." Emma voiced her thoughts on this matter calmly to James.
