Chapter 31: Prep Time
The group trudged through the eerily silent forest, Alexander leading the way. 'Err… Alexander, where are we heading?' Ben whimpered shyly, curiosity creeping into his voice.
Alexander glanced back and smiled proudly, "Nowhere special, just where is fought off the monster."
"Cool," Ben whispered with sparkles in his eyes.
Hailey pulled Ben, "No. Not cool. What if the monster is there?" She asked worriedly.
"It's not there right now, but if it comes back, we might be in trouble. So we better hurry," Alexander replied.
As they drew closer to their destination Alexander grabbed a long and sturdy tree branch about the width of a child's arm and stopped. "Sam you got a lighter?"
"Err… no Dean's the one with the lighter," Sam replied a bit perplexed.
Alexander examined the branch for a moment mumbling to himself, before swiftly drawing his knife and cutting off about a meter-long piece.
He then brought his knife edge about 6 or 7 cm away from the tip, then under the curious gazes of everyone, began cutting around the stick in a circle, carving a slightly deep circle around the tip of the stick.
He then threw the branch to Hailey, who promptly shot him a questioning look. "You know a thing or two about surviving in the woods, don't you?" Alexander said handing her his knife. She nodded curiously, "I need you to cut off all the bark from the circle to the tip." Alexander pointed to the marked section of the stick.
"She doesn't need to do that, I can do it." Sam offered.
"No, I need you for something else." Alexander rejected.
Hailey looked at the stick, processing Alexander's instructions, "Oh, you're trying to make a fire torch." She quickly understood.
But then added, "this branch is good but it still has a little moisture, you can't get a good fire going it without some sort of catalyst."
Alexander grimaced," Yeah, I know I'm still working on that."
"You stay here and cut. Ben, stay with her and look after her." Alexander instructed. "Sam, come with me."
"What? Where are you going?" asked Hailey a little concerned.
"Sam and I are just checking ahead. We'll be close by, in earshot if anything happens give us a call, and we'll be right over." Alexander warmly explained.
"Okay." Hailey agreed with some reservations but began cutting while Alexander and Sam went deeper into the forest.
A few steps deeper into the forest, they stopped. Roy's lifeless body lay sprawled on the ground, his face frozen in a twisted grimace. Sam exhaled sharply, the realization sinking in. 'This is why you didn't want them to come, isn't it?'
Alexander said nothing but approached Roy's body and after a brief moment of silence, flipped the body over and began searching it.
Sam already used to such morbid actions from hunting with his family asked, "What are you looking for?"
"Don't know... A chance?" Alexander muttered.
His fingers brushed against something in Roy's breast pocket. A flask.
Alexander hummed thoughtfully as he twisted the cap open and took a cautious sniff—only to recoil, coughing violently.
*cough* *cough*
The stinging scent burned his throat.
"What is it? Are you okay?" Sam asked, stepping closer.
Alexander waved him off. "I'm fine," he managed between coughs. He glanced at the flask and scoffed. "Roy may have had a drinking problem." The last of his coughs subsided. "Wouldn't be surprised if this was pure ethanol."
Sliding the flask into the inner pocket of his jacket, Alexander continued searching Roy's body. Moments later, his fingers closed around something solid.
"Yes!" He pulled out four full bullet magazines.
"Is that what you were looking for?" Sam asked. "But I thought you said the rifle was cracked? Shooting it might be dangerous."
"Maybe but it doesn't hurt to have them. Besides I've got other plans for these." Explained Alexander vaguely.
Sam stretched his neck watching curiously as Alexander pulled up his sleeves and undid the bandages he had wrapped around his arms. His wounds had all but healed. Now he had two sets of dry ointment-filled bandages. He dripped some of the flask's content onto the tip of one bandage before sprinkling some more across its surface. All while careful not to touch the bandage.
After he was done, he gave it to Sam, instructing him to go back and wrap the bandage around the tip of the stick he had given to Hailey to save time.
Sam soon left Alexander after some convincing to return to Ben and Hailey.
After Sam left, Alexander quickly tore a small A5 size piece of Roy's clothing. Then using his knife he broke up all the cartridges in the magazine and poured the gunpowder into the fabric. Before loosely tying it shut and carefully securing the cloth to his arm using the second set of bandages, making sure it wouldn't come undone from the slightest impact.
After he was done Alexander quickly found the tracks of the wendigo and returned to the group. He returned to find Ben holding the now-wrapped stick and everyone waiting for him.
Under the rays of the setting sun, Alexander led the group through the forest following the tracks left by Wendigo after their encounter. Thanks to his slightly enhanced senses he could easily spot the blood traces left by the wendigo as it ran off.
The blood trail snaked through the underbrush, leading them to a gaping cave mouth in the heart of the forest. The entrance loomed before them, dark and uninviting, a cold wind seeping out like the whisper of something waiting inside.
Sam exhaled, clenching tightly. 'So... this is where the Wendigo is.'
