Chapter 228: A Win!

[A/N: And here comes day two of the Mass release event! Part 3/4 of today's Mass release! Here you go fellas! Big Shout out to Dirtydew!]

.....

The air between them grew tense.

Not in an awkward way, but in a way that said the game was on.

Hugo could feel it.

The short, chubby friend was staring him down, and for some reason, she had decided that tonight, she would be the gatekeeper of Celine's dance card.

Celine, on the other hand, just seemed amused. Like she was watching a battle unfold in front of her.

You could tell she was interested in Hugo as well, but she was simply going to watch him diffuse the difficult situation and assess his level of skill first.

This was his first shit test! Fight against the Gatekeeper!

But Hugo wasn't just here to fight. He was here to win. It was time to test out his level of skill!

The Battle Begins!

Hugo flashed a confident smile, keeping his posture relaxed. "What do you mean, she's not dancing with me?"

The short, fat friend which Hugo labeled as Gatekeeper in his mind, crossed her arms and raised her chin. "Exactly what I said. She's not dancing with you."

Celine let out a small laugh, shaking her head. "You're being dramatic."

She was also getting a little tired of this clingy friend of hers. Why won't she let her go for a few minutes?!

Hugo smirked when he saw her micro expressions and glanced at Celine. "See? Even she thinks you're overreacting."

Gatekeeper wasn't fazed. "Doesn't matter. She's not going anywhere."

Hugo nodded slowly, pretending to think. "Ohhh, I get it now."

Gatekeeper squinted at him. "Get what?"

Hugo turned to Celine, his tone teasing. "She's just protecting you. This is a good friend right here. She's not about to let any random guy just sweep you off your feet."

Gatekeeper nodded proudly. "Exactly."

"But…" Hugo dragged the word out, letting it hang. "I'm not just some random guy. I'm Collins's friend. That makes me… practically family, no?"

Celine let out a small laugh, while Gatekeeper frowned. "Family? That's a reach."

Hugo raised his hands. "Okay, okay, not family. But at least an acquaintance. A trusted ally."

Celine giggled. "A trusted ally? That's a new one."

Gatekeeper wasn't buying it. "I don't trust you."

Hugo's smirk grew wider. He was making a lot if progress. His last few sentences had managed to neutralize the Gatekeeper completely without her even knowing it.

At least now she wasn't out for his blood. This was progress!

"That's because you don't know me yet. Give it ten minutes, and you'll be singing my praises."

Gatekeeper rolled her eyes. "You think you're slick, huh?"

Hugo grinned confidently, taking a swing of his drink. "I know I am."

Celine, clearly entertained and impressed, shook her head. "You two are ridiculous."

Gatekeeper narrowed her eyes at Hugo. "Listen, I know your type."

Here we go!

"Oh? My type?" Hugo raised an eyebrow, amused. "Do tell."

"You're one of those guys who thinks he can talk his way into anything."

Hugo placed a hand on his chest, feigning innocence. "What? Me? Never."

Gatekeeper wasn't convinced. "Yeah, right."

Celine leaned against the wall, watching them like it was a boxing match.

Hugo turned to her. He had reached the later stages of his masterplan! "Celine, be honest. Wouldn't you like to dance?"

Celine smirked and held his gaze confidently. "I might."

Gatekeeper immediately jumped in. Things were getting out of hand! "But she won't."

Hugo turned back to Gatekeeper. "Oh? Are you her spokesperson?"

"She doesn't need one, but I'm making sure she doesn't regret her choices."

Hugo grinned. "Regret? Dancing with me? Come on, that's impossible."

Gatekeeper tilted her head. "You sound awfully confident for someone getting rejected right now."

Hugo shrugged. "I wouldn't call it rejection."

"What would you call it, then?"

"An obstacle course."

Celine laughed. "This is the most fun I've had all night." Her gorgeous eyes twinkled as she leaned closer to Hugo.

Hugo smirked. "See? I'm already making your night better, and we haven't even danced yet."

Gatekeeper sighed. "You're relentless."

Hugo nodded. "I am."

Celine looked between the two of them. "So what's your next move?"

Hugo tapped his chin. "Good question."

Gatekeeper narrowed her eyes. "Give up."

Hugo gasped dramatically. "Give up? Me? Never."

Gatekeeper rolled her eyes. "You're not winning this."

Hugo grinned. "You're underestimating me."

Celine giggled. "I think you're underestimating her."

Hugo nodded. "She's tough, I'll give her that."

Gatekeeper smirked. "Damn right."

Here was the opportunity! It was time to deal the finishing blow to this short, fat menace!

"But…" Hugo trailed off.

"But what?" Gatekeeper narrowed her eyes.

"You're forgetting something important."

Gatekeeper folded her arms. "And what's that?"

Hugo leaned in slightly, lowering his voice like he was about to drop some major wisdom.

"You're not the one I asked to dance."

Celine's eyes widened slightly.

Gatekeeper opened her mouthnas if to speak, then paused abruptly. It was like she had been stunned!

Hugo smiled. "See? This isn't your decision."

He had trapped her now. Doing anymore would be overreacting on her part.

Hugo had neutralized her so she wasn't his enemy, lowered her defenses, then struck with the final blow!

Gatekeeper glanced at Celine. "You seriously want to dance with him?"

Celine grinned. "Maybe."

Hugo's smile widened. "Maybe? That sounds like a yes to me."

Gatekeeper groaned. "You're impossible."

Hugo shrugged. "I prefer 'persistent.'"

Celine chuckled. Smiling brightly. "Fine, I'll dance."

Gatekeeper looked betrayed. "You're seriously going with him?"

Celine smirked. "He earned it."

Hugo grinned victoriously. "You heard the lady."

Gatekeeper sighed. "Just don't break her heart, Casanova."

Hugo smirked. "Wouldn't dream of it."

Celine laughed and grabbed his hand. "Come on, let's go before she changes her mind."

And just like that...

Hugo won!
