Chapter 6: Despair
"This is bad, Veronica can't defeat them on her own, she's not that strong yet." The man who was holding onto the briefcase assessed the situation with a worried look.
"What can we do to help?" Alan asked worriedly. Ezekiel was helping out, and he felt he could at least do something to help too.
"Nothing, hopefully she can persist. Your friend is doing well, but if he continues missing at this rate, he's going to be out of bullets real soon." The man replied.
Alan looked at Ezekiel worriedly, Ezekiel was the only person he had left from their settlement that was still alive, well, that he knew was still alive. He could not sit back and watch him die.
"Isn't there another gun?" He asked.
"There should be one in the van." The man turned to the van, he noticed Alan was about to walk in that direction and hurriedly stopped him, "You will only distract them if you go out."
The water dome Veronica created separated them from the van, so if Alan wanted to get the gun, he had to leave the protection of the dome.
"We can't just watch them die?" Alan did not want to sit back, but he was stopped again by the man in the lab coat, frustrated, he said, "If he dies we die."
Veronica was continuously being pushed back by the three Siliks she was fighting against, meaning there was nothing she could do at the moment. Ezekiel has managed to keep the other Silik at bay, and he has stopped firing carelessly. After the initial flurry, he quickly maintained his calm and fired each shot with a purpose.
The man in the lab coat was impressed by Ezekiel's courage, being able to go against a Silik of this level with little to no training was an impressive feat. The fact that he had not sustained any injuries while also slightly grazing one of the arms of the Silik showed that it was no fluke, and was actually Ezekiel's amazing efforts.
"Hmm, good point." The man nodded after thinking about Alan's words, he shrugged and added, "But there's nothing we can do. We can't leave this place even if we want ro."
Alan turned around and tried to get out of the water dome, and to his surprise, he was pushed back by a mysterious force.
"Damn it!" He repeatedly banged at the water dome, no matter how hard he tried, he could not get to it to budge, out of breath he complained, "What the hell?!"
With no other choice, he turned his attention back on Ezekiel. At the time he looked Ezekiel's way, he heard a grating sound as well as the scream of a lady.
Crash! Boom!
"Ah!"
The sound of something slamming the ground reverberated across the road, followed by a shout of pain.
"Huh?" When Alan turned to look at the source of the sound, he was appalled when he saw Veronica lying on the floor, injured.
Even though it was in the middle of the night, the moon was hanging high in the sky, and they could see well within a few meters of them.
"Veronica!" The man with the briefcase yelled.
The water dome around them started faltering before finally falling apart.
Bang!
A figure was soon sent flying, crashing into the group who were previously protected by the water dome. It was none other than Ezekiel, who had a large injury on his chest, made by the Silik's claw. Luckily, it wasn't too deep.
However, that wasn't good news for Alan and the scientists. With Ezekiel out of the way, and Veronica injured, there was no one who could stop the Siliks from reaching them.
At the last moment, Veronica tried to stand up, but she was once again sent flying. Ezekiel, on the other hand, lost consciousness the moment he was sent flying.
The man with the briefcase panicked, not sure of what to do.
"Sir, what do we do?" Alan asked, frightened by the approaching Silik.
"Nothing, we're dead." The man said, hope leaving his eyes.
One of the scientists took the gun that was in Ezekiel's hand and started firing randomly at the Silik, making it stay away, for now. But he realized to his horror that he would be out of ammo within a few seconds.
"Sir put yourself together, we still have that." One of the scientists with the man grabbed him, shaking him to get back to his senses.
"But, who's going to use it? And, how can you be so sure the person will survive? All the tests we have been conducting have always ended with the patient dying." The man said.
"Besides, none of us here is a Supreme, and Veronica is too busy trying to stay alive." He added.
"What are you talking about?" Alan asked, hurriedly.
According to what he heard, there was a chance that they could use something that could help them, so why were they delaying?
"In here lies maybe humanity's greatest hope of fighting against the Siliks, but the issue is that we are not sure if it will work. Well, according to some results we ran, it should be safe, but we aren't certain yet since there isn't a live patient to use it on. Also, it can only be used on someone with chaos energy." The man with the briefcase explained as he pointed at the briefcase.
"Then what are you waiting for? Give it to me." Alan stretched out his hand.
While they were speaking, the scientist using the gun soon ran out of bullets.
The Silik started preparing an energy beam attack on its mouth that it would shoot out any second, yet the man with the briefcase was still contemplating.
"But, you might die. As I said, it hasn't been tested yet. And from what we've deduced, if a human without chaos energy uses it, then they will die." The man warned.
"Do we have a choice? Give it to me." Alan said.
He would die anyway if he didn't use this thing, why not try it?
The other scientist didn't even argue with him, pressuring the man with the briefcase to give the injection to him. This was the only one they had made, and it took them years of theories, trials and errors, as well as a bit of luck before they managed to make it. If it is truly going to work, but it was wasted on a worthless boy, then the scientists would be kicking themselves, even in their graves.
Well, they wouldn't have a grave if this attack connects.
Alan took the injection from the briefcase, staring at it, he knew his hopes of survival lay on what happened after he took it.
Just as the Silik was about to shoot out the energy beam, it was grabbed by a large hand made from water and dragged back.
"What are you doing?" Veronica yelled when she saw Alan already injecting himself.
By the time she finished asking her question, Alan had already emptied the content of the syringe into his body.
