The Adaptive Quincy of Bleach

Chapter 19: An old man last stance (19)

---

Learning how to cook from Ryuken was surprisingly easier than he thought. This man was probably a big softie.

A cutie patootie one might even say. The man actually did care; he just had a hard time showing it. Either that, or his way of showing it was very bad.

As he cooked himself some food, he tasted it. Yup, it tasted like straight ass. He was not going to eat that.

He had no control over Reishi. The best he could do was remove all the Reishi he had poured into making the food.

He looked annoyed as it ended in another failure, sighing to himself a bit.

Just as he prepared to rest, he felt something wrong.

Hollow Reiatsu. He could feel it.

Somewhere in Karakura Town right now, a Hollow had appeared. No, not one—three.

Their strength seemed to be on the verge of becoming something far greater. They were still small fries to him, but to ordinary civilians and Uryu, they were dangerous.

Yes, Uryu was catching strays even in moments like this. He wanted to embody a big brother figure.

Well, it was none of his business. His grandpa told him it was the Shinigami's job, so he was sure the Shinigami could handle it.

---

**Time skip.**

It's been 30 minutes, and he had not felt any Shinigami spiritual pressure at all. All he felt was his grandpa fighting the Hollows.

His grandpa could kill them but chose not to.

Sora felt his grandpa's spiritual pressure decrease over time, the amount of Reiatsu the old man possessed vanishing every few seconds.

That was long enough.

Walking outside his house, he gauged the distance between him and his grandpa. Okay, he shouldn't be that far.

---

**POV Change.**

Soken could be seen fighting three massive Hollows.

The old man dodged a strike using Hirenkyaku, jumping in the air and launching a powerful volley of arrows toward the Hollow's leg—more specifically, its joints.

*Bam.*

Soken felt some of his ribs shattering as one of the Hollows hit him.

"A Quincy. It's been a while since I tasted one of those."

A distorted voice echoed. The Hollow, with its grotesque appearance, licked its lips—or teeth, considering it didn't have any.

The head of the beast, or its mask, resembled a bat. It had fur around its neck, looking like a mane.

Its skin was green, and what seemed to be fur covered its stomach.

The creature looked to be a quadruped—an ugly one at that.

Soken jumped back, once again using Hirenkyaku to escape an attack. As he rode the Reishi in the air, something hard slammed into his side, causing the old man's vision to momentarily go blank.

Regaining his vision, he saw the other Hollow. A crab-like Hollow could be seen.

"Where do you think you're going?"

Soken needed to separate them. Taking out a Ginto from his side, he launched it at the crab-like Hollow. What could only be described as a film of light emitted from the thrown Ginto, surrounding the enemy.

"A silver rod strikes the five-fingered stone bed!"

(***Not my property.***)

As the jail trapped one of the Hollows, another distorted voice rang out:

"Where do you think you're going... Quincy?"

The third Hollow was already in front of the old man.

And, like the gentleman he was, he started beating the old man black and blue, using brute strength to combo him in midair.

A punch to the gut. He grabbed him by the air and slammed him into the floor.

He then threw Soken toward the bat-like Hollow, who caught the old man and slammed him on the ground before spitting some acidic substance at him.

The bat Hollow then tossed Soken far away.

The third Hollow, which had managed to break out of its cage, used its crab-like speed to slam into Soken at 120 miles per hour.

Soken slammed into the floor, his frail old body unable to take the onslaught.

What appeared to be blue veins spread across his body. He was in pain.

He was a Quincy who had just been infected with Hollow Reiatsu. It felt like his soul was being destroyed, and there was nothing he could do to stop it.

Blood poured out of his mouth as he began puking aggressively.

So much blood.

He couldn't take much more of this. At this rate, he was going to die.

The Hollows slowly approached him, seemingly savoring the despair on the man's face as they prepared to devour him.

Licking their masks—or lips, or whatever those were—the Hollows drew closer.

They seemed ready to consume their prey.

Soken, meanwhile, was more worried about Uryu. He knew the boy was somewhere nearby and hoped he would be fine.

If he had a regret, it was that he wouldn't get to witness the boy grow into the fine gentleman he knew he would become.

Struggling to his feet, Soken took a protective stance in front of the Hollows. If he was going to die, he would die fighting.

His body barely moved. It could hardly move, in fact.

He activated **Ransōtengai**, using strings of Reishi to manipulate his body, even though all his muscles were practically useless now.

"Oh, you still have some spunk," the muscular Hollow said with a smile.

"I like it when they put up a fight. Makes it more thrilling to eat them alive," the bat-like Hollow proclaimed, licking its lips again, ready to devour the old man.

Soken summoned his Quincy bow and prepared for battle.

As the crab-like Hollow charged toward him, the old man vanished.

The bat Hollow barely had time to react as a hole the size of its Hollow hole appeared in its arm, causing blood to splatter everywhere.

A Ginto fell to the ground as Soken reappeared behind the muscular Hollow.

*Clang.*

The sound of something metallic slamming against something hard echoed as Soken's Quincy bow collided with the Hollow's hardened skin.

"Come here."

The Hollow swung at the old man, but one Hirenkyaku was all it took for Soken to evade and get to safety.

Another Ginto fell.

Soken fired a volley of arrows at the Hollows, creating holes all over their bodies but avoiding their masks.

Another Ginto fell.

As the bat Hollow's wings were riddled with holes, rendering it unable to fly, Soken landed on the ground, huffing and puffing.

The muscular Hollow noticed something—it seemed Soken was out of Ginto.

This was over.

"Got that out of your system, old man?" the Hollow mocked.

Bleeding out and feeling his Quincy powers diminishing by the second, Soken looked at the Hollows and let out a wise smile.

"Old man's going crazy," the muscular Hollow sneered.

As the Hollow prepared to strike, Soken's smile widened. He summoned what appeared to be a sword and plunged it into the ground.

"Sprenger."

The muscular Hollow's eyes widened in shock as the four Ginto placed in a diamond formation activated.

The explosion that followed utterly drained the Hollow of its energy.

As the dust settled, the muscular Hollow lay on the floor, heavily damaged but not dead. It was on the verge of death, unable to heal.

Soken felt the light drain from his body. So, this was it.

At least Uryu would be safe. The Hollows, too damaged to continue, might even leave his body untouched.

He had protected his grandson. That was all that mattered to him.

The old man closed his eyes. This life wasn't so bad after all.
