Chapter 20: Lines Begin to Blur
Emily sat in her apartment that evening, the envelope Julian had given her spread across her coffee table. Pages of financial records, internal memos, and confidential reports lay before her a tangled web of information that hinted at something far more complex than mere corporate greed.
She scribbled notes furiously, connecting dots that had eluded her for weeks. Julian wasn't innocent but neither was Marcus. And the deeper she dug, the harder it became to distinguish truth from manipulation.
Her phone buzzed. Daniel.
"You okay?" he asked the moment she answered.
Emily sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "I don't know. Julian gave me internal documents things he had no reason to share. Either he's trying to control the story, or… he really wants me to know the truth."
Daniel's voice tightened. "Or both. You can't trust him, Emily."
"I know," she admitted. "But I also can't trust Marcus. Something about the way he approached me it doesn't add up."
A pause. Then, "So, what's your next move?"
Emily stared at the documents, her resolve hardening. "I'm going to hold Julian to his word. If he wants to show me the truth, I'll let him."
"You're walking a fine line," Daniel warned. "Be careful you're not just playing with a story. You're playing with people who have everything to lose."
After the call ended, Emily leaned back against the couch, the weight of her decision settling in. She had crossed a line tonight one that blurred the boundaries between journalist and subject.
And as much as she tried to tell herself it was only about the story, she couldn't ignore the pull Julian Blackwood had on her.
A pull that was growing stronger by the day.
