Chapter 25: Secrets in the Shadows
Emily's pulse raced as she stepped onto the third floor a place most employees at Blackwood Enterprises never even knew existed. The restricted archives were tucked behind a plain, unmarked door. She slid Julian's key into the lock, holding her breath as it clicked open.
The room was cold and sterile, illuminated by the soft hum of fluorescent lights. Rows of metal filing cabinets stretched out before her. Each drawer was meticulously labeled with project codes and legal jargon but her focus was singular.
Project Arcturus.
After several tense minutes, she found it a thick black binder marked "Arcturus: Phase I & II". She pulled it free, her fingers trembling slightly as she flipped it open.
The first few pages detailed the official narrative: a research program designed to explore advanced energy solutions. But as she dug deeper, the language shifted more technical, more secretive.
One document caught her attention:
"Phase II: Human Impact Studies – Authorized by M.H."
Her heart pounded in her chest. Human impact? What was Marcus doing? And why had Julian let it get this far?
A noise behind her made her freeze. The door creaked open. Emily slipped behind a cabinet, clutching the binder to her chest.
Footsteps echoed softly on the tile floor. She held her breath as a shadow fell across the room. Through the gap, she caught a glimpse of Marcus.
He moved with practiced ease, heading straight for the section where the Arcturus files had been. He flipped through the drawers, his face tense. After a moment, he cursed under his breath and turned to leave.
As the door clicked shut behind him, Emily exhaled shakily. He's looking for these files, too.
She couldn't risk being caught. Tucking the binder under her blazer, she slipped out of the archives and made her way back to the main floor.
Julian was waiting in his office, leaning against his desk. His gaze sharpened when he saw the binder in her hands.
"You found it," he said quietly.
"I did," she replied, dropping the binder onto his desk. "And I found something else Marcus knows I'm close. He was down there looking for this."
Julian's expression darkened. "Of course, he was."
"You need to tell me everything," she demanded. "What is this 'human impact study,' Julian? And why are you still working with a man you clearly don't trust?"
He ran a hand through his hair, tension visible in every line of his body. "I've tried to keep him in check to undo the damage he's done. But Marcus is clever. He covers his tracks."
Emily crossed her arms. "You said you wanted me to see the truth. So tell me what is he really after?"
For the first time, Julian hesitated, the mask of control slipping. "If Marcus gets what he wants… it won't just destroy this company." His voice dropped to a near whisper. "It will destroy lives."
A chill ran down her spine. Whatever they were hidingit was far from over.
