Chapter 26: A Dangerous Alliance
Emily sat across from Julian, the weight of the Project Arcturus binder heavy between them. His words echoed in her mind It will destroy lives. Whatever Marcus was doing, it was bigger and more dangerous than she had anticipated.
"You can't just let him keep operating unchecked," she said, her voice firm. "If you know he's a threat, why not cut him loose?"
Julian's mouth twisted into a bitter smile. "If it were that simple, I would've done it already. Marcus isn't just a business partner he's a shareholder. Removing him would trigger a legal battle that could cripple Blackwood Enterprises."
Emily's frustration boiled over. "So you're protecting him?"
"I'm protecting everything I've built," Julian snapped, but the anger faded quickly, replaced by something softer. "And maybe… I'm protecting you, too."
The sincerity in his voice caught her off guard. For all his ruthlessness, there was a man beneath the cold exterior one who seemed to genuinely care.
Still, she couldn't afford to let her feelings cloud her judgment. "I need to keep digging," she insisted. "If there's more to Project Arcturus, I'm going to find it."
Julian leaned back, studying her with those piercing eyes. "If you do this, you'll make yourself a target. Marcus doesn't play fair, Emily."
"I'm not afraid of him," she said, lifting her chin.
A slow, almost reluctant smile tugged at his lips. "Of course you're not."
The air between them shifted charged with something neither of them wanted to acknowledge. For a heartbeat, it felt like the rest of the world faded away.
Then Julian cleared his throat, breaking the moment. "Fine. I'll give you access to the internal records but on one condition."
"What's the catch?" she asked warily.
"You report everything you find to me. No surprises," he said, his voice low and serious. "If we're doing this, we're doing it together."
Emily hesitated. Trusting Julian meant blurring the lines between her investigation and something far more personal. But if she wanted the truth, she had no choice.
"Deal," she said at last.
Julian extended a hand across the desk. She took it, the warmth of his touch sending an unexpected jolt through her.
"Be careful, Emily," he murmured.
"I always am," she replied but deep down, she knew this was a dangerous game.
And she was no longer sure who she could trust.
