Chapter 28: Closer Than Ever
Late-night silence filled Blackwood Enterprises as Emily and Julian worked side by side in his office. The city lights glowed beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows, but Emily's focus remained on the files spread across the sleek mahogany desk.
"This offshore account," she murmured, pointing to a coded transaction. "It was created six months ago right before the Arcturus project expanded."
Julian leaned over her shoulder, his cologne lingering in the air. "Marcus told the board the expansion was fully funded through legitimate channels. If this account exists, he's been lying."
The warmth of his presence was distracting far too distracting but Emily shook off the thought and pressed on. "He's hiding money, but why? What's the endgame?"
Julian's jaw tightened. "Power. Control. Marcus has always wanted more than a seat at the table."
Emily turned her gaze toward him. "And you let him in."
"I thought I could control him," Julian admitted, the mask of his usual confidence slipping. "But Marcus plays a longer game than anyone realizes."
For a moment, she saw something rare vulnerability. He wasn't just the cold, calculated billionaire the world knew. Beneath the surface was a man who had made mistakes. And now, those mistakes were unraveling everything he had built.
"You're not as untouchable as people think," Emily said quietly.
Julian's lips curled into a faint, humorless smile. "No one is."
The air between them grew heavy charged with something neither of them could name. Emily shifted in her seat, trying to dispel the tension.
"I should keep digging," she said, reaching for another folder.
Before she could pull away, Julian's hand brushed hers gentle, deliberate. "Emily."
Her heart pounded as she looked up, meeting his intense gaze. For once, there was no sarcasm or control just raw honesty.
"You don't have to do this alone," he said softly.
The walls she had built around herself wavered. For weeks, she had told herself this was just an investigation a means to uncover the truth. But the way Julian looked at her now made that lie harder to believe.
"I'm not sure I know how to trust you," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
Julian's hand lingered a moment longer before he pulled back. "I don't blame you." His expression softened. "But I trust you, Emily. And I don't trust easily."
The words hung in the air, impossible to take back.
She swallowed hard, pushing aside the emotions clawing at her chest. "Let's finish this. Together."
Julian nodded, but something had shifted between them something neither of them could ignore.
And as much as Emily tried to fight it, she knew she was getting too close.
