The Billionaire's Dilemma

Chapter 29: Marcus’s Warning

Emily tightened her coat around herself as she stepped into the sleek marble lobby of Blackwood Enterprises the next morning. The weight of the investigation sat heavy on her shoulders especially now that she and Julian were working together.

As the elevator ascended to Julian's office, she reviewed the latest documents on her phone. The offshore accounts linked to Project Arcturus weren't just suspicious they were damning. If Marcus's scheme came to light, it would destroy everything Julian had built.

When the elevator doors slid open, a voice cut through the silence.

"You're getting too comfortable here, Ms. Taylor."

Emily froze. Marcus Davenport stood near Julian's office door, his sharp gray suit as polished as his cold, calculating smile. His eyes gleamed with a dangerous edge as he stepped closer.

"I didn't realize you were keeping tabs on me," she said, keeping her voice even.

Marcus chuckled softly. "I make it my business to know who's… influencing Julian's decisions. And lately, you seem to be a very close influence."

Her pulse quickened, but she refused to let him see her unease. "I'm just doing my job."

"Ah, yes. The dedicated journalist." He tilted his head. "Still chasing after a scandal? Or is it something more personal now?"

Emily's fingers curled into fists at her sides. "If you're so worried, maybe you have something to hide."

The air between them grew tense as Marcus's smile faded. "Be careful, Ms. Taylor. You're playing in a league where people like you get… lost."

It wasn't just a warning it was a threat.

Emily lifted her chin, refusing to back down. "I don't scare easily, Mr. Davenport."

Marcus's expression darkened as he leaned in slightly. "Then maybe you should."

Without another word, he turned on his heel and walked away, his footsteps echoing through the hall.

Emily exhaled the breath she didn't realize she'd been holding. Marcus was dangerous more than she'd realized. And if he knew she was digging into Project Arcturus, it meant she was getting too close to the truth.

When she stepped into Julian's office, he immediately noticed her tense expression. "What happened?"

"Marcus," she said, closing the door behind her. "He knows I'm onto him and he's not happy about it."

Julian's face hardened, a flicker of anger flashing in his eyes. "He won't touch you," he said, his voice low and resolute.

Emily wanted to believe him but she also knew Marcus wasn't the type to make empty threats.

And the deeper they dug, the more dangerous this game became.
