The Billionaire's Dilemma

Chapter 30: Lines We Can’t Cross

Julian paced his office, the tension between him and Emily thick in the air. Marcus's warning had unsettled her, and he could feel the weight of it lingering.

"He's testing us," Julian said, his voice sharper than usual. "Marcus doesn't make threats unless he's feeling cornered."

Emily leaned against his desk, arms crossed. "Then we must be getting close. The offshore accounts are just the beginning I'm sure of it."

Julian ran a hand through his hair, his frustration barely concealed. "And if you keep digging, you'll make yourself a target."

"I can handle myself," she snapped, her tone defensive. "I've dealt with worse."

His eyes locked onto hers. "I'm not doubting your strength. But Marcus plays dirty. He doesn't just destroy careers he destroys people."

Emily swallowed the lump rising in her throat, knowing he wasn't exaggerating. Still, she couldn't walk away not when the truth was within reach.

"I'm not stopping," she said firmly. "If we back down now, he wins."

Julian took a step closer, his voice softening. "And if something happens to you? I can't…" He stopped himself, but the emotion in his voice betrayed him.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The fight, the tension it all faded under the weight of what hung between them.

"Why do you care so much?" Emily asked quietly, the question heavy with unspoken feelings.

His jaw clenched, and for once, Julian didn't have an easy answer. "Because I can't lose you," he admitted, the words raw and unguarded.

Emily's breath hitched. The carefully drawn line between them was blurring, and the more they fought it, the harder it became to ignore.

"You shouldn't say things like that," she whispered.

"I know," he said, stepping even closer. "But it's the truth."

Her heart pounded as he reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face. The warmth of his touch sent a shiver down her spine.

"This isn't part of the plan," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

"I don't care about the plan," Julian replied, his voice low and intense. "I care about you."

For a moment, Emily let herself forget the risks. Forget Marcus, the investigation, and the lines they weren't supposed to cross.

And as Julian leaned down, his lips hovering just above hers, she realized that some lines were already broken.

But once they crossed this one there would be no going back.
