Chapter 32: Uncovering Marcu's Secret
Emily barely slept that night. Every time she closed her eyes, she felt the heat of Julian's touch and the weight of his words.
By morning, her resolve hardened. She couldn't afford to lose focus not when Marcus was watching her every move. Whatever was happening between her and Julian had to take a backseat to the truth.
At Blackwood Enterprises, the atmosphere was tense. Whispers of an internal audit floated through the halls a sign that Julian wasn't taking Marcus's threats lightly.
Emily stepped into the research office, scanning the data she had compiled. The offshore accounts tied to Project Arcturus were still incomplete pieces of a puzzle Marcus had gone to great lengths to hide.
"You're digging deep," a voice cut through her thoughts.
Emily turned to find Chloe, one of her closest colleagues from the Daily Tribune, leaning against the doorway. Her sharp eyes scanned the papers on Emily's desk.
"I'm following a lead," Emily said, keeping her tone neutral.
Chloe arched an eyebrow. "Is that all you're following? Rumor has it, you and Blackwood are spending a lot of time together."
Emily's stomach twisted. "It's work," she replied curtly.
"Sure." Chloe stepped closer, her expression turning serious. "Just be careful, Em. I've seen powerful men like him chew people up and spit them out."
Emily swallowed hard. She appreciated Chloe's concern but Julian wasn't the one she feared. Marcus was the real threat, and she was getting closer to exposing him.
Later that evening, Emily slipped into the records room, scanning through files Julian had quietly authorized her to access. Hours passed as she pieced together scattered fragments until one document stopped her cold.
A shell corporation tied directly to Marcus was funneling money into hidden projects. If these records went public, it wouldn't just bring down Marcus it would shake Blackwood Enterprises to its core.
Her heart pounded as she copied the files onto a flash drive. She was playing a dangerous game, and if Marcus discovered how close she was to unraveling his secrets…
The door creaked open behind her. Emily froze.
"You're working late," Julian's familiar voice broke the silence.
Relief flooded through her as she turned to face him. "I found something," she said, holding up the flash drive.
His gaze darkened as he stepped closer. "What did you find?"
"Proof that Marcus is laundering money through a shell company," she whispered. "This could ruin him."
Julian's jaw tightened. "And if he realizes you have this, he won't stop until he silences you."
Emily lifted her chin. "I'm not afraid of him."
But Julian was. Not for himself for her.
"You're not alone in this," he said quietly, his hand brushing against hers. "We'll bring him down together."
For once, Emily allowed herself to believe that. But deep down, she knew… the closer they got to the truth, the more dangerous it became.
