The Billionaire's Dilemma

Chapter 34: Julian’s Past Resurfaces

Emily sat across from Julian in the sleek, glass-walled conference room of Blackwood Enterprises. The air between them was heavy thick with unspoken words and tension that had been building for weeks. Despite their growing connection, Emily couldn't ignore the whispers she had overheard from her colleagues whispers that hinted at something darker beneath Julian's perfect façade.

She adjusted the notepad in her lap, trying to maintain her composure. "There's something I need to ask you," she began, her voice steady despite the storm brewing inside.

Julian leaned back in his chair, his expression unreadable. "Go on."

Emily hesitated. She knew this question could either bring them closer or tear down the fragile trust they had begun to build. "What exactly happened with Blackwood's Singapore Deal three years ago? The records are sealed, and no one is willing to talk. Why?"

For a moment, Julian said nothing. His jaw clenched slightly, the only indication that her words had struck a nerve. When he finally spoke, his voice was low, measured. "That's old news. Why are you digging into it?"

"Because people don't just bury something unless they have something to hide," she shot back, the journalist in her refusing to be silenced.

Julian exhaled sharply, pushing to his feet. He walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city skyline stretching behind him a picture of power and control. "I made a mistake," he admitted quietly. "A deal went bad. People were hurt."

Emily's heart pounded in her chest. This was the closest he had come to admitting real fault. "And Marcus?" she pressed, watching his shoulders tense at the name.

"He covered for me," Julian said bitterly. "But nothing comes for free. He's been using it as leverage ever since."

The confession hung heavy in the air. Emily wanted to feel satisfied this was the kind of truth her investigation needed but instead, all she felt was an ache for the man standing before her.

"You could lose everything if this gets out," she whispered.

Julian turned back to face her, his mask of indifference cracking. "I know," he said, softer now. "But what I'm more afraid of… is losing you."

His words shook something deep inside her. Emily had promised herself she wouldn't fall wouldn't blur the line between professional and personal but Julian Blackwood wasn't a man you could keep at arm's length.

Before she could speak, the conference room door swung open. Marcus stood in the doorway, his usual smugness barely concealed beneath a veneer of politeness. "I hope I'm not interrupting," he said smoothly, but his eyes glinted with something darker.

Emily's stomach twisted. She knew one thing for certain Julian's past wasn't finished with him yet. And neither was Marcus.
