Chapter 47: A Target on Emily
The morning light streamed through the penthouse windows, but Emily barely noticed as she typed furiously on her laptop. She was getting closer too close. If she could find a paper trail leading from Bryce Holden to Marcus, it would be enough to clear Julian's name.
Julian watched her from across the room, concern etched on his face. "You're pushing yourself too hard," he said softly.
"I don't have a choice," Emily replied, not looking up. "If Marcus wins, he'll ruin you and he won't stop there."
Julian crossed the room and gently closed her laptop. "And if he comes after you? I can't let that happen."
For a moment, their eyes locked both knowing that Marcus wouldn't hesitate to destroy anyone standing in his way.
A Warning Comes Too Late
Later that day, Emily met David Wu in a quiet café downtown. He slid a folded envelope across the table.
"This is everything I found on Bryce Holden," he whispered. "But listen to me back off while you still can. Marcus doesn't play fair."
Emily unfolded the papers, scanning the addresses and transaction records. This was it proof that Marcus funneled money through Bryce's network to frame Julian.
"I can't stop now," she said firmly. "I need to find Bryce."
David shook his head. "You're in deeper than you realize. And if Marcus finds out…"
Emily swallowed hard, but her resolve didn't waver. She had to finish what she started.
The Threat Becomes Real
That evening, as Emily returned to her apartment, a chill ran down her spine. Something felt… off.
Her heart pounded as she unlocked the door. Inside, her living room was in shambles papers strewn across the floor, drawers pulled open. Someone had been here.
A folded note sat on the coffee table. With trembling fingers, she opened it:
"Stop digging. Or next time, it won't be just a warning."
A sharp knock at the door startled her. She flinched but it was Julian, his expression darkening when he saw the mess.
"They got to you," he said, scanning the room.
Emily held up the note, her hands shaking. "Marcus knows I'm close."
Julian's jaw tightened with rage. "That's it. You're staying with me. I won't let him touch you."
A Dangerous Decision
Back at the penthouse, Julian's protective instincts burned through him. Marcus had crossed a line attacking him was one thing, but threatening Emily? Unforgivable.
"You can't face him alone," Emily said quietly, sitting beside him.
Julian turned to her, his voice fierce. "I won't lose you, Emily. We'll finish this together."
In that moment, Emily realized something deeper: Julian wasn't just fighting for his company he was fighting for her.
But Marcus wasn't done playing his game. And the next move? It would test them both in ways they never expected.
