Chapter 94: Volume 1 Chapter 94: Red Fury
"We did it!"
In the desert outside the factory, Saria and Kal'tsit watched as Garde charged into the massive factory, filled with both awe and concern.
Two giant electromagnetic cannons, comparable to warship sub-guns, were set on either side of the entrance, along with two dragons over twenty meters long.
Forget about a single person; even a well-trained army would struggle to break through without heavy fire support from high-speed warships.
If Garde had delayed even a moment at the gate, the factory's internal systems would have reacted, summoning robots and bio-soldiers to swarm him. Escaping would have been nearly impossible.
But Garde had done it. He not only disabled the cannons with ease but also clipped the wings of the two dragons during his charge.
The sight of him already inside the factory, while the dragons roared in frustration and struggled to take flight, was both impressive and unsettling.
Though they managed to get airborne, their flight was much slower and lower than before. If there were any ground-to-air weapons around, the dragons would be easy targets.
Despite this, they still flew, crashing through the crumbling buildings in their pursuit of Garde, now inside the factory.
Back in the desert, Saria and Kal'tsit sprang into action. Once the factory's defenses were focused entirely on Garde, they slipped in, heading deeper inside. The factory itself was enormous, resembling a small town. From the entrance, a straight road led to the core of the facility, but they couldn't follow it, as Garde was just ahead, fighting the factory's defenses.
The two dragons were smashing through old buildings, while ten or so security droids attacked Garde. One of the dragons crushed two droids just by crashing into them.
As they made their way, Saria noticed that Kal'tsit seemed to know exactly where to go, expertly avoiding security patrols. She even seemed to have an intimate understanding of the factory's layout.
Saria couldn't help but ask, "Have you been here before?"
Kal'tsit nodded without giving much detail. "I've been here before, back when the factory's AI wasn't active."
But how long ago that was—whether it was a hundred years, two hundred, or even further back—only Kal'tsit knew.
"This way!"
Just as they were about to run into a patrol of droids, Kal'tsit opened a hatch to an underground waterway and jumped inside. Saria hesitated for a moment, glancing in the direction of Garde's battle, but ultimately followed Kal'tsit. Garde was buying them time, and they couldn't waste his effort.
At that moment, Saria spotted something in the sky.
"What is that…?"
Her eyes widened in shock. She no longer cared about staying with Kal'tsit and immediately sprinted toward Garde.
"Garde!"
A shell dropped from a high tower over a thousand meters away, landing precisely where Garde was fighting. The explosion filled Saria's vision with fire. The shockwave scattered her hair, and several old buildings were leveled, turning into a heap of rubble. The droids attacking Garde were melted by the heat, and even the two dragons were consumed by the fire, unable to escape in time.
Saria stared in disbelief. She hadn't expected the factory to be armed with defenses on par with a mobile city's cannons.
The heat from the blast could be felt even from hundreds of meters away. This kind of weapon could pierce even warship armor. Even if she used all her Originium arts, she couldn't survive a direct hit from such a weapon.
But from within the flames, Garde's voice emerged.
"Go!"
One of his hands was gripping a dragon. In the nick of time, he had used the dragon as a shield, absorbing most of the damage from the explosion.
The dragon let out a pained wail, and its incredible vitality kept it from dying immediately, even after being hit by a cannon strong enough to punch through a mobile city's defenses. But the gaping wound on its body made it clear that it wouldn't survive another hit.
The other dragon, which was farther from the blast, had its scales scorched and was bleeding, but it wasn't dead. Still, fear overtook it. It didn't want to die like its companion. However, the implant controlling its brain forced it to keep fighting, even if it meant death.
It had to hold off Garde, even if it meant its own destruction.
"Go!" Garde shouted again, dragging the bloodied dragon's body as he urged Saria and Kal'tsit to continue.
Saria clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms until she nearly bled. But she knew she had no choice. Staying here would only be a hindrance. If she wanted to help Garde, she had to reach the factory's core and destroy the central AI, as well as the tower's cannon.
"We have to trust him," Kal'tsit said seriously from within the underground tunnel. Even she hadn't expected the factory's cannons to activate so quickly and with such precision.
For the ancient civilization's factory, the outer residential area was expendable. The factory's diameter was around 5,000 meters, with the outer residential area taking up 500 meters, the production area 1,500 meters, and the core region 1,000 meters.
With all the mechanical guards and bio-soldiers in their way, Garde had little chance of reaching the core while being pounded by the tower's cannons. It was up to Saria and Kal'tsit to destroy the factory's AI.
Meanwhile, outside the factory, ignoring its dying companion, the remaining dragon lunged at Garde again.
This time, it was smarter, opting not to engage directly but to buy time. As the surrounding droids swarmed in, the dragon pulled back and gathered its strength, spewing flames toward Garde.
Above, another shell appeared in the sky.
With over a dozen mechanical guards surrounding him, Garde had no room to dodge.
The shell fell.
Boom!
The heat melted the ground within a few dozen meters of the blast. At the center of the explosion, Garde took the full force of the hit. His entire body screamed in pain.
It hurt!
It hurt so much!
Damn it! Damn it!
Die!
The dragon thought that this second blast would either kill or severely injure Garde. But as the fire and smoke cleared, a massive hand reached out, gripping the dragon by the neck like a helpless chick.
A much larger crocodile man, nearly twice his previous size, emerged from the smoke.
Grabbing the dragon by its throat, Garde slammed it into the ground with tremendous force. He opened his jaws and tore off chunks of flesh from the dragon's neck.
One bite!
Two bites!
He kept tearing at the dragon until its neck was a mess of blood and flesh, leaving the dragon unable to even cry out in pain. Only when it was barely clinging to life did Garde spit out the bloody chunks in his mouth, sneezing them out with disgust.
Crack!
With one final stomp, he broke the dragon's neck.
"Die!"
