The Devil CEO’s Reborn Lover

Chapter 21: A Dangerous Night Escape

The moment Mo Qing Yao confessed to Qin Yangzhou that Wu Mei had lost her memory and that there was no certainty when or if it would return, something inside him broke. Her words were firm but full of compassion.

"You must protect her at all costs," Mo Qing Yao said, her eyes steady. "She doesn't know who she is. She doesn't remember you, or what she meant to you. Right now, she's like a lost child. Anyone could manipulate her, especially the people who tried to kill her. Keep her safe. And prepare your heart. She might want to leave you."

Qin Yangzhou nodded, his jaw clenched. His voice was low but resolute. "Even if I have to start from zero, I'll make her fall in love with me again. I won't let anything happen to her. Not now. Not ever."

Without waiting another second, Qin Yangzhou took Wu Mei into his arms and led her to the waiting helicopter. The drive home was quiet. Wu Mei stared out the window, confusion clouding her face. She was too polite to protest but clearly uncomfortable.

"Where are we going?" she finally asked.

"Home," he answered simply.

"Your home or... mine?"

He smiled gently. "Ours."

She looked away.

When they arrived at the mansion, Qin Yangzhou carried her bridal-style through the doorway. Wu Mei's eyes widened. "You don't have to carry me. I can walk."

"I know. But let me. Please."

Once inside, he gently set her down and led her to the grand bedroom. "This is your room... our room."

Wu Mei blinked, taking in the lavish decor. "I want to sleep alone."

Qin Yangzhou chuckled softly. "I'm your husband. I'll sleep on my side, I won't touch you. I just want to make sure you're safe."

Still unconvinced, Wu Mei sighed and walked to the bathroom. She locked the door behind her and took a long shower, letting the hot water ease her mind. When she came out, wrapped in a towel and confusion, Qin Yangzhou had already taken his shower and lay on one side of the bed, facing away from her.

They fell asleep like strangers separated by fate and memories.

But the silence of the night didn't last.

In the middle of the night, Wu Mei stirred. Her dreams were restless, filled with fragments of things she didn't understand: fire, tears, someone calling her name. She woke with a gasp. Looking to her right, she saw Qin Yangzhou asleep.

Without a sound, she slid out of bed, tiptoed to the window, and climbed out. Her body remembered how to move, even if her mind didn't. The streets were quiet and cool. Her feet moved with purpose even as her heart questioned.

As she walked, she noticed something: a girl being harassed by three drunken men in a dark alley. Wu Mei didn't hesitate.

She sprinted forward.

"Hey! Leave her alone!" she shouted.

The men turned, sneering. "What's this, another one? You want to play hero, sweetheart?"

They lunged at her, but Wu Mei's instincts kicked in. Her body flowed with the grace and speed taught by Mo Qing Yao. A palm strike to the first man's throat, a kick to the second's knee, and a punch that sent the third sprawling. The girl ran away crying thanks, and the three men limped off in fear.

Wu Mei stood still, chest rising and falling, adrenaline coursing through her. She didn't know who she was, but she knew she hated seeing the weak bullied.

Just then, she noticed movement out of the corner of her eye—a figure ducking behind a wall. Watching her.

She turned sharply. "Who's there?!"

She gave chase, but before she could take more than three steps, strong arms wrapped around her waist.

"Wu Mei!" Qin Yangzhou's voice broke with panic.

She struggled in his grasp. "Let me go!"

"You scared me to death," he whispered, pulling her against him. His breath was uneven, and his voice trembled. "Don't ever disappear like that again. Please."

His lips found hers in a desperate kiss, and for a moment, time stopped.

But Wu Mei pushed him away, eyes wide. "Don't do that."

"Please," he begged. "Let me help you. You're my wife, my everything. I know you lost your memory, but I haven't lost mine. I remember every moment. I can't live without you."

"I don't remember you," she whispered. "This isn't fair."

"Then let me make you fall for me all over again."

She turned to leave again, but he scooped her up and carried her to the car despite her struggling.

"Put me down!"

"No. I almost lost you once. I won't let that happen again."

He placed her gently in the backseat and closed the door.

Once they arrived home again, he didn't say a word. He led her upstairs, opened the bedroom door, and walked away without another glance.

Wu Mei stood in the middle of the room, heart racing. Her hand touched her lips where his kiss still burned.

Outside the room, Qin Yangzhou leaned against the wall, fists clenched, breathing hard.

His chest rose and fell heavily, heart aching with every second that passed in silence. He had never felt so helpless before—not even when facing ruthless competitors or life-threatening deals.

But now, standing just meters away from Wu Mei, who no longer recognized the man who would give up the world for her, he was drowning.

"She's right there," he whispered to himself. "But she's not really here... not yet."

His eyes were bloodshot, the shadows under them deep. Days of sleepless nights and relentless searching had worn him down, but it was the emotional weight that truly broke him.

Slowly, he sank down onto the floor, back still against the wall, resting his elbows on his knees as he stared blankly ahead.

"I'll wait," he murmured. "I'll wait as long as it takes. Even if it takes forever."

Inside the room, Wu Mei sat at the edge of the bed, confused and restless. Her fingers unconsciously touched the necklace around her neck—one she didn't remember putting on, yet felt strangely familiar. Her heart thudded with unease... and something else. A longing she couldn't explain.
