Chapter 22: I Won’t Let You Go Again
The morning light seeped through the thin curtains, casting a soft glow across the lavish bedroom. Wu Mei stirred under the silk covers, her brows furrowing slightly. Though her body was rested, her mind was unsettled. Images flickered in her sleep again—hands reaching for her, the cold sensation of water swallowing her body, and a man's voice crying her name.
She sat up suddenly, sweat clinging to her brow. The room was silent, too silent. She looked around, disoriented. The elegant room, the expensive furniture—this was still Qin Yangzhou's home. Her lips parted slightly as she tried to remember something, anything that would anchor her thoughts.
The door creaked open, and Qin Yangzhou entered, holding a tray with a steaming bowl of congee and a plate of steamed buns.
"You're awake," he said, his voice gentle. "I brought you breakfast."
Wu Mei stared at him for a long moment. There was something in the way he looked at her—a mixture of hope and deep sorrow. She looked away.
"Thanks," she said simply.
Qin Yangzhou placed the tray on the table beside the bed. "Did you sleep well?"
"I had another dream," she whispered. "But I can never remember the faces. Just the fear."
His heart clenched. "Your memories will come back. When you're ready."
She nodded absently, picking at the congee. After a few bites, she placed the spoon down and looked out the window.
That afternoon, Qin Yangzhou called in more security for the mansion. Something about Wu Mei's disappearance the night before still gnawed at him. The streets were safe, but not for her. Not when someone had once tried to kill her. Not when she was vulnerable like this.
He met with his right-hand man, Xu Wei, in the living room.
"Any updates from the city cameras?" Qin Yangzhou asked, voice low.
Xu Wei nodded. "We caught footage of a man near the house last night. He stood outside for nearly an hour. Then he disappeared down an alley when our patrol passed."
Qin Yangzhou's eyes darkened. "Facial recognition?"
"Negative. He was wearing a hat and mask. But he was watching the house. I'm sure of it."
Qin Yangzhou swore under his breath. "Double the guards. I don't want her walking alone. Not even inside the compound."
That night, Wu Mei sat alone on the balcony, her legs curled beneath her. She stared up at the stars, her fingers clutching the railing. Something didn't feel right.
She heard rustling below in the garden. Standing quickly, she peered over the edge but saw nothing. Just swaying bushes and shadows.
Suddenly, a cold shiver ran down her spine.
From the corner of her eye, a man stood watching her from the other side of the garden wall—dressed in black, half-hidden by ivy. Their eyes met, and in an instant, he ran.
Without thinking, Wu Mei jumped up and sprinted downstairs.
She burst out the front door, her bare feet hitting the cold stone. The man had already disappeared into the darkness, but she followed instinctively. She turned a corner around the wall, ready to give chase.
"Wu Mei!"
Qin Yangzhou's voice thundered through the air.
She froze.
Before she could react, strong arms wrapped around her waist and pulled her back.
"What are you doing?!" he growled, his breath ragged as he turned her toward him.
"Someone was watching the house," she said, breathless. "I saw him. I think he was spying on me."
Qin Yangzhou cupped her cheeks, checking her over. "You could have been taken again. Why didn't you call me?"
"There wasn't time—"
He pulled her tightly into his chest. His heart was racing as if he'd just run a marathon.
"Don't scare me like that again," he whispered hoarsely. "What will I do if I lose you again."
She stiffened in his arms. Her heart beat fast, but not just from the chase. From his closeness.
He pulled back, his eyes locked with hers, a thousand emotions swirling in his gaze.
"I don't remember you! You keep saying I'm your wife, but I don't feel it.
Wu Mei turned her back to him.
"I need time."
He stepped forward again, but she began walking away. Without thinking, Qin Yangzhou rushed forward, scooped her into his arms, and carried her to the car parked by the gates.
"Let me down!" she shouted, struggling.
"No. You're not safe here. I'm taking you home."
They arrived back at the mansion in silence. Qin Yangzhou carried her straight to the room despite her protests.
"I can walk!"
"Then walk tomorrow," he snapped. "Tonight, you're staying by my side."
He placed her gently on the bed and stood, looking down at her, breathing heavily.
She glared at him, but something in her eyes softened as she saw the way his hands trembled.
He sat beside her, his voice low.
"You're right. You don't remember me. But I remember you. I remember your smile when you made fun of my cooking. I remember the nights that we sleep together that we kiss and that you love me."
He looked up at her, tears in his eyes.
"I'm afraid every night. That you'll never remember me, and choose to walk away."
Wu Mei looked at him in silence, her heart aching for reasons she couldn't explain.
Finally, she whispered, "Why do you love me so much?"
He gave a broken smile. "Because you're my world. You always have been. Even when you didn't want to be."
Outside, the night wind whispered through the trees, carrying secrets neither of them fully understood.
And Qin Yangzhou She was holding Wu Mei in her arms and was thinking when her memory would return to place if she ever remembered it again.
And Wu Mei kept thinking who this man is and why he's still telling her that she is his wife and why she doesn't remember anything from the past.
What will happen in chapter 23, will Wu Mei catch the man that is spying on her and who he is.
