Chapter 28: Whispers from Another Life
The room was bathed in the gentle glow of moonlight streaming through the curtains, casting silver shadows on the walls. It was almost four in the morning when Qin Yanzhou's eyes snapped open. His chest rose and fell with uneven breaths, cold sweat beading along his brow. His dream still haunted him.
In the nightmare, Wu Mei had been surrounded by fire—her face streaked with tears, calling his name. He had run to her, through the suffocating smoke, reaching her only to be engulfed in the flames with her. Their hands touched for a fleeting second before everything vanished in blazing light.
He sat up in bed, pressing a palm to his forehead, his heart still thundering.
Wu Mei stirred beside him. Her lashes fluttered as her eyes blinked open, hazy with sleep. She noticed the tension in his jaw, the haunted look in his eyes.
"Yanzhou?" she whispered, her voice rough with sleep. "What's wrong?"
He turned to her slowly, his eyes searching hers as if looking for something he couldn't yet name.
"I had a dream," he murmured. "You were in danger. You... you were burning, and I couldn't save you. I ran into the fire, and we both—" His voice broke off.
Wu Mei reached out and touched his arm gently. "It was just a dream."
He looked down at her, expression unreadable. "Why did you change?"
She blinked. "What do you mean?"
"That night... the first time we met. You were cold, distant, but still mysterious. And then at the show event you changed, you kiss me in front of those people. You chose me over He Sheng. You started loving me. Why?"
His voice trembled with vulnerability, the kind that he rarely allowed to show.
Wu Mei felt her throat tighten. Her fingers curled slightly, and her gaze lowered. She had been preparing for this moment for a long time.
"I love you, Yanzhou," she said softly. "That's not a lie. It never was.
" I know, I love you to but why did you choose me over He Sheng, why?"
" There's something I haven't told you."
His eyes didn't leave her face.
She sat up slowly in bed, the sheet slipping down her arms. The moonlight caught the shimmer in her eyes.
" If I tell you that I was reborn, will you believe me."
Silence.
He stared at her, brows drawing together in confusion.
"I came from a past life," she continued. "And in that life, I was betrayed by the people I trusted the most—He Sheng and Wu Yue, and in that past life I didn't love you, I hurt you."
His jaw clenched. "What did they do?"
"They set me on fire." Her voice broke for a moment, but she continued. "They locked me inside a villa and lit it on fire. I screamed... and no one came. Until you did."
His breath hitched.
"You came for me. You broke through the flames to reach me. You grabbed my hand, pulled me close... But it was too late. The fire consumed us. We both died that night and I swore if there's another life I will love you."
Qin Yanzhou couldn't speak. His fingers curled into the sheet, knuckles white.
"When I opened my eyes again, I was back. Alive. But in the past. Before everything. It was a second chance. I knew I had to change things. I had to survive. And this time... I didn't run from you. This time, I chose you."
She reached for his hand, lacing her fingers with his.
"I didn't love you in that life. I was blind, foolish, caught in He Sheng's lies. I didn't see your love... until it was too late. And now, every time I look at you, every time you hold me, I remember the way you tried to save me. I remember dying with you. And it tears me apart."
Qin Yanzhou was silent, his throat working. Slowly, he reached out, cupping her face in both hands.
"You're telling me... you came back from dead? From a past life and this is because you chose me?"
She nodded.
"And you remember everything?"
"Every betrayal. Every time I looked into your eyes and saw you risking everything for me. That's why I came back different. That's why I love you, Yanzhou. Because I already lost you once and I don't want to lost you again."
He leaned in, pressing his forehead to hers. His voice was husky when he spoke.
"And you didn't think I'd believe you?"
Tears slid down her cheeks. "It sounds crazy."
"It sounds painful," he corrected, pulling her into his arms. "But it also makes everything make sense. Your strength, your hate toward He Sheng. Your loyalty. Your love."
He kissed her temple. "I believe you, Mei. I believe everything. And I swear to you—this time, nothing will touch you. I'll burn the world down before I let anyone take you from me again."
She buried her face into his chest, inhaling his scent.
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you earlier."
"No." He tilted her chin up. "You told me when you were ready. And now that I know... I'll never let you go."
The wind brushed against the windows, but inside their room, it was warm. Safe. He held her like a lifeline, and she clung to him like an anchor. The past was painful, but the present was filled with hope.
And Yuanzhou said „ Let's go to bed because it's only four in the morning."
„ OK" and Wu Mei started sleeping on Qin Yuanzhou's chest.
But Qin Yangzhou didn't sleep for a while because his mind was on what Wu Mei said to him, that He Sheng and her stepsister kill them both in her past life.
But later Qin Yangzhou started to sleep to,and his arms were around Wu Mei waist.
And in that moment, under the quiet moon, they finally felt free.
She had told the truth. And he still loved her.
Maybe this life would be different.
Maybe in this life they will not die and live peaceful.
