The Devil CEO’s Reborn Lover

Chapter 39: Cuffed by Love, Bound by Fear

The soft afternoon light filtered through the curtains, casting gentle shadows across the room. Wu Mei stirred beneath the silk sheets, her body still aching faintly from the intensity of love. Her eyes fluttered open, adjusting to the warm glow. She turned her head and saw Qin Yangzhou still asleep beside her, his face relaxed in rare serenity. His arm lay possessively across her waist even in sleep, but it had loosened just enough for her to slip away.

She exhaled softly and glanced down at her ankles.

The cuffs were gone.

Her breath caught in her throat.

Freedom. A sliver of it. Enough.

She moved slowly, quietly. Sitting up, Wu Mei reached for her phone on the nightstand. Her fingers trembled slightly as she typed:

"Don't look for me. I'll return tomorrow. I just need a little space. Please."

She placed the phone down and stood up, wrapping a shawl over her shoulders. The clock read just after two in the afternoon. She tiptoed to the wardrobe, pulled on a simple outfit, and crept toward the hallway.

Each step made her heart pound louder in her chest.

She reached the corridor, walking softly, her shoes in her hand. But as she neared the stairs, she saw them.

Guards.

They weren't moving, but their eyes were sharp, alert. She backed away and scanned the hallway for another route. Her gaze landed on a smaller service door, barely noticeable beside a cabinet.

Her heart leapt.

She crept toward it, twisted the handle, and found it unlocked. Biting her lip, Wu Mei dropped to her knees. The door was low. Too small to walk through. So she bent, assuming a crawling position. Like a child. Like a thief.

Like a woman escaping her possessive husband.

She crawled forward, her palms scraping lightly against the floor, knees pressing into the cold stone. Just as she reached the threshold—

"Stop."

Her heart froze.

Two guards stood right outside.

Before she could react, they stepped forward. One gently but firmly grabbed her arm, the other supported her from the other side.

"Madam, please. Master Yangzhou is waiting for you."

Wu Mei was speechless.

They escorted her back through the house in silence. Every step brought her closer to the man who haunted her dreams and consumed her every waking thought.

When she entered the bedroom again, Qin Yangzhou was seated in the armchair by the window. He held her phone in one hand, the message still glowing on the screen.

His expression was unreadable.

But the curve of his lips held no warmth.

"So... you still have energy left in you, my wife."

His voice was soft. Too soft. It sent chills down her spine.

The guards bowed and left.

The door shut behind them.

Wu Mei remained near the threshold, her hand resting over her stomach instinctively. He stood slowly, setting the phone down, and walked over to the liquor cart.

He poured himself a glass of whisky, the ice clinking softly. He drank, his eyes never leaving hers.

"Do you really want to test me, Wu Mei? After everything?"

"Yangzhou... please, I just—I wasn't going to disappear. I just wanted to breathe."

He downed the rest of the drink.

"You're pregnant, Mei. You can't go on these little adventures."

"Mo Qing is with me. She would protect me."

He stared at her, then laughed darkly.

"And if something happens to you? Or to the baby? Will Mo Qing bring you both back to life? Tell me, Wu Mei—what do I do if you never return? If I lose you again?"

Her throat tightened.

"I... I'm sorry. But—"

He threw the glass to the side. It shattered against the wall, making her flinch.

"No. I'm done hearing sorry. You say it every time, and yet you keep trying to run."

He walked toward her, his steps deliberate.

"I wake up, and you're gone. You think that doesn't terrify me? I can't lose you, Wu Mei. Not you. Not now. Not ever."

Her lips parted, but no words came.

He pulled something from the drawer beside the bed. A pair of silver handcuffs with soft velvet lining.

Her eyes widened.

"Yangzhou... no, you don't have to—"

She tried to step away, but he was faster. He didn't grab her harshly. He didn't shout. But his grip was unshakable. He gently took her wrist, then his own, and clicked the cuffs closed between them.

He looked into her eyes and whispered:

"Now you won't run."

Her heart beat wildly, half in fear, half in something she didn't want to name.

"You think I'm cruel? You think this is madness? Maybe it is. But I love you more than my sanity, Wu Mei."

She stared at him, tears brimming.

"I can't live in a cage."

"Then I'll be the cage you love."

Silence.

Then, he exhaled and pulled her gently into his chest.

"We'll go to that damn place together. I don't care how dangerous it is. If you want to see it again, we go together."

Wu Mei closed her eyes against his warmth, against the storm that was always him.

He held her tighter.

"And if you try to leave again, my sweet wife, I'll do more than just cuff your wrist. I'll chain your soul to mine."

She looked up at him and, for the first time, she wasn't sure if she was terrified or touched.

Qin Yangzhou wasn't going to let her go.

And maybe—just maybe—a part of her didn't want to escape anymore. Or she will trick Yuanzhou again to escape from him because she wants to go only with Mo Qing to discover the hidden world and to discover secrets about the ring.

To be continued...

What do you think that will happen in chapter 40? Will Wu Mei go with Qin Yangzhou or she will go alone with Mo Qing to discover secrets about the hidden world and ring. Comment and let me know.
