The Devil CEO’s Reborn Lover

Chapter 50: Shao Wei awaken her power

The forest was quieter than it had ever been.

After the intense battle against Dracon, Wu Mei and her companions had returned to the heart of the clearing to rest. The magical warmth from the wand had faded into a subtle hum inside Wu Mei's chest, but its presence remained—an ever-beating reminder of the storm yet to come.

Shao Wei sat alone by the pond, staring into her reflection. Her usually calm features were drawn tight, troubled by something unspoken.

Her fingers twitched over the dirt, drawing another strange symbol without realizing it.

Behind her, Mo Qing approached silently, crouching beside her.

"You fought well," Mo Qing said gently.

Shao Wei didn't look up. "I didn't do anything."

"You spoke an incantation that strengthened Wu Mei's shield."

"I just repeated what I heard in my dreams," Shao Wei replied. "I've always heard voices when I sleep—whispers, like fire crackling in my ears. I thought I was cursed."

Mo Qing tilted her head. "Or maybe you're blessed—and you just haven't realized it yet."

Shao Wei finally looked at her. "I don't feel powerful."

"That's the first step to becoming truly strong," Mo Qing said, standing and offering her a hand. "Doubt is the birthplace of power. Let's go. We're going on a search."

"A search?"

"For answers."

Qin Yangzhou was already preparing the supplies. Wu Mei stood at his side, watching him pack potions, food, and maps into a leather satchel.

"We need to head northeast," Zhao Xi said, returning with his cloak wrapped around him. "There's a cave system beneath the Valley of Echoes. If Dracon is building something, it'll be hidden there."

Wu Mei looked at the map. "Isn't that near the Molten Grounds?"

Zhao Xi nodded grimly. "Exactly. The place where the Fire Keepers once lived—before their bloodline vanished."

A flicker of light seemed to pass over Shao Wei's face, but she said nothing.

They left at dawn.

The path through the Valley of Echoes was narrow and lined with jagged rocks. Echoes of footsteps—and sometimes voices—bounced unnaturally off the cliffs, distorting sound until no one was sure what was real and what was memory.

"This place is cursed," Mo Qing muttered.

"It's alive" Wu Mei whispered.

They pressed on.

As they entered the mouth of the cave, a gust of heat burst out. It was as though the earth itself exhaled, and the air became thick with smoke and sulfur.

"Careful," Qin Yangzhou said, drawing his sword.

The deeper they went, the hotter it became. The walls glowed faintly with ancient runes that pulsed like embers, warming the stones from within. Streams of lava flowed far below a crumbling path.

Wu Mei glanced back at Shao Wei, who was beginning to sweat and stumble.

"Are you okay?" she asked, reaching for her.

Shao Wei nodded, but her hands were shaking.

"It's this place," she said breathlessly. "It feels… familiar."

They came to a chamber—massive, hollow, and glowing like the belly of a volcano. In its center stood a cracked altar, surrounded by chains fused into molten stone. Above it, a throne of blackened rock hovered, untouched by the heat.

And behind it all, a stone mural etched into the wall—depicting a woman with flames in her eyes and fire in her palms.

Qin Yangzhou stopped. "This is Fire Keeper territory."

Zhao Xi approached the mural, running a hand over the inscription. "This is older than any of our books. It speaks of a last descendant—one who would awaken only when the balance of magic was threatened."

Suddenly, the air pulsed.

The ground trembled.

From the shadows of the chamber, red glowing eyes appeared—hundreds of them.

Creatures born of molten rock and ash, crawling forward like lava given form.

"Form a circle!" Mo Qing shouted, daggers already in her hands.

The creatures hissed and lunged.

Steel clashed. Magic sparked.

Qin Yangzhou's blade cut down one, but three more replaced it.

Wu Mei raised her wand, casting a barrier to protect Zhao Xi.

Shao Wei stood frozen, eyes wide, unable to move.

A creature leaped toward her, claws raised.

"Shao Wei!" Wu Mei screamed.

But before anyone could reach her, Shao Wei raised both hands in front of her face.

And screamed.

Flames burst from her palms.

Blinding. Blistering. Wild.

The fire consumed the creature mid-air and kept going—searing through five more that surrounded her. The entire chamber lit up with orange and gold.

Everyone turned to her.

Shao Wei stood in the center of the fire, untouched, her hair billowing, her eyes glowing like burning coals. The ground beneath her feet cracked with heat.

The flames coiled around her, forming a protective circle before shrinking into her skin.

Silence fell.

Even the molten creatures paused.

"I… I don't…" Shao Wei fell to her knees, shaking.

Wu Mei rushed to her, grabbing her shoulders. "You have fire. It's in you."

"I didn't know—"

" It's okay that you awaken your power" Wu Mei said, voice trembling.

Qin Yangzhou took a cautious step forward. "The fire didn't hurt her… or you. It obeyed her."

Zhao Xi grinned, despite the tension. "Looks like we found our Fire Keeper."

Shao Wei looked around the room, heart pounding. "I don't know how to control it…"

"We'll help you," Wu Mei promised. "You're not alone."

But the moment was short-lived.

The remaining lava creatures let out a collective screech and charged.

"Let's show them what a team of misfits can do," Zhao Xi growled, raising his blade.

The chamber exploded into chaos again.

Shao Wei, still trembling, focused her energy. The flames responded more easily now—less wild, more like extensions of her will. She threw bursts of fire, drawing circles of heat, controlling it with instinct more than understanding.

Wu Mei blasted enemies back with her wand, moving in rhythm with Qin Yangzhou, who covered her with precise strikes. Mo Qing twirled through the fight like a phantom, blades carving paths of silence.

Together, they fought like they'd done it for years.

And when the last creature crumbled to ash, the throne cracked and split in half.

A final surge of fire erupted—and in its center, a core crystal floated.

Bright. Blazing. Unbearably hot.

Shao Wei stepped toward it, as if pulled by something invisible.

"Shao Wei, wait—" Wu Mei reached for her, but the other girl was already touching the crystal.

Instead of burning her, it dissolved into her skin.

She gasped.

And suddenly, all the fires in the chamber snuffed out.

The walls dimmed.

The cave grew silent once again.

Shao Wei turned back to them, glowing faintly. Her eyes were normal—but her presence had shifted. She wasn't afraid anymore.

"I think I know who I am now," she said.

Wu Mei smiled. "You're one of us."

Zhao Xi laughed under his breath. "Remind me not to piss you off."

Qin Yangzhou wrapped an arm around Wu Mei's shoulders. "Another weapon for our side."

Mo Qing nodded. "She's more than a weapon. She's a symbol."

Shao Wei touched her chest, where the fire still hummed beneath her skin.

"I don't know what Dracon is planning," she said. "But I'm not running anymore."

They climbed out of the cave just as the first rays of moonlight crept over the cliffs.

A new fire burned that night—not in the sky, nor in the earth—but in the heart of a girl who once thought she had no power at all.

And from far beyond the mountains, deep in the ruins of a forgotten kingdom, Dracon opened a dark tome and sneered.

"So… the Fire Keeper lives."

His fingers curled around a dagger carved from dragonbone.

"Let's see how long her flame lasts… before I extinguish it myself."
