Chapter 51: Dracon Return
The moon had barely risen when a thick fog rolled in from the east, wrapping around the cliffs like a living thing. It slithered through the rocks, curling between trees and swallowing the warmth of the fire the group had built at the edge of the cave's exit.
Wu Mei stood near the flames, rubbing her arms. "It's too quiet."
Qin Yangzhou had just finished sharpening his blade. He rose slowly, his dark eyes scanning the mist with sharp suspicion. "Too quiet always means trouble."
Mo Qing nodded, her twin daggers slipping into her sleeves. "We should move before the fog thickens."
But before anyone could take a step, the ground trembled.
Not like the soft pulses from the Fire Core earlier—but with a violent, sudden jolt, like something massive had awoken beneath the surface.
Shao Wei instinctively stepped back. The crystal warmth she had absorbed earlier flickered inside her, and she turned toward the cliff's edge, eyes narrowing.
"I feel something… wrong."
A low chuckle echoed across the valley—cold and thick like poison.
It wasn't just sound. It seeped into their bones, into the air, into the fire, which sputtered and died without warning.
Then came the voice.
"I must say... I expected the Fire Core to kill you."
Dracon.
His silhouette appeared through the fog—tall, elegant, and terrifying. His black cloak flowed like smoke, and his pale hand gripped a newly forged wand, pulsing with red light. His eyes gleamed like molten steel in the shadows.
"You again," Wu Mei said through clenched teeth, stepping in front of Shao Wei.
Dracon tilted his head mockingly. "And here I thought you'd be a little more excited to see me."
"You should've burned in that cave," Zhao Xi growled, drawing his blade.
"Please," Dracon said, smiling. "You still don't understand, do you? The Fire Core wasn't a test for me. It was a test for her."
He pointed directly at Shao Wei.
Everyone turned toward her.
Shao Wei's hands balled into fists. "What do you mean?"
Dracon took another slow step forward, the fog retreating around his body like it was afraid of him.
"You were meant to awaken. I just didn't expect your fire to choose you this soon. You're... incomplete."
"She's not yours to manipulate," Wu Mei snapped.
"But she was. Her ancestors were Fire Keepers under my control before your precious rebellion," Dracon said, his voice dipping lower. "I fed their flames. I made them gods. Until they betrayed me."
He lifted his wand.
The ground cracked open, and a column of fire burst from beneath Shao Wei's feet.
She screamed and jumped back, barely avoiding it.
Dracon flicked his fingers again. Another jet of fire erupted, cutting across the cliffside, aiming straight at her chest.
But just before it hit—
"Shao Wei!" Zhao Xi shouted.
He lunged, grabbing her by the waist and yanking her to the side. They rolled across the rocky ground, fire singeing the spot where she had just stood.
They landed hard, tangled together, with Shao Wei sprawled across Zhao Xi's chest. His arms were still around her, his breathing fast, his heart thundering against her side.
For a moment, everything paused.
She looked down at him, startled.
He looked up at her, equally breathless.
"You okay?" he asked, voice rough.
"I—yes," she stammered. "You… saved me."
He smirked faintly. "Get used to it."
Another explosion rocked the cliffs, snapping them both back to the fight.
Wu Mei hurled a magical barrier toward Dracon, shielding the others. "Everyone! Scatter! Don't give him a clear shot!"
Mo Qing dashed toward the rocks, throwing daggers that sparkled with enchantments. Dracon dodged them effortlessly, deflecting with a dark shield.
"You fight like children," he taunted. "Where is your fury, Fire Keeper?"
Shao Wei's eyes glowed faintly. She stood, shaking, her hands burning with emberlight. "I won't let you control me."
"Oh? Then show me your power," he sneered, pointing his wand toward her again. "Or die like your ancestors."
The wand pulsed—and a dark spiral of fire burst forth, curling like a snake.
Shao Wei didn't flinch.
She stepped forward and raised her arms. The fire met her palms—and this time, she didn't burn.
The flames slowed… then twisted.
They danced around her fingers, changing color from red to gold.
Dracon blinked, startled. "Impossible."
Shao Wei pushed her hands forward—and the golden flames surged back at him, a mirror of his own magic.
Dracon flew back, crashing into a stone pillar that cracked on impact.
Zhao Xi ran to her side. "That was insane. You controlled his fire."
"I didn't think," she whispered. "I just... did it."
"You're doing fine," he said. His hand brushed hers. It was warm.
Their eyes locked for a second, heat rising between them—but the moment was shattered when Dracon roared back to his feet.
"Enough games."
The sky turned black.
A storm of shadows exploded from behind him, forming monstrous wings that spread wide over the valley. His body pulsed with raw energy—corrupt, twisted, and furious.
"This is only the beginning," he hissed.
Wu Mei stepped beside Shao Wei. "Then let's end it here."
The three of them—Wu Mei, Shao Wei, and Zhao Xi—stood together, facing the nightmare in front of them.
Dracon threw his arms wide—and the wind exploded.
Dark flames, shadow beasts, twisted magic—they surged toward the group like a flood.
Wu Mei activated her wand's full light, shielding the others.
"Mo Qing, flank him!" she shouted.
"Already on it," came the whisper from the fog.
Qin Yangzhou sprinted toward the edge of the cliff, drawing a rune in the air. "Barrier on the east—Shao Wei, fire left!"
Shao Wei unleashed a blazing arc of fire, pushing back a line of advancing shadows.
Dracon howled and sent a blast of force that cracked the ground beneath her.
She stumbled—
But Zhao Xi caught her again, spinning her away from a falling boulder.
"Do you always need saving?" he teased, panting.
She blushed. "Maybe."
"Focus, lovebirds!" Wu Mei shouted, laughing despite the danger.
Together, the team pushed forward, breaking through the wall of darkness. Dracon backed toward the center of the cliff, wounded now, cracks in his dark armor showing.
"You think this is a victory?" he hissed. "This is just the beginning."
He raised his wand.
A black orb exploded above them, sucking all light into its core.
Everyone shielded their eyes.
But when they looked again—Dracon was gone.
Only his laughter remained—carried by the wind, echoing into the night.
They stood in stunned silence, the stars slowly returning overhead.
Zhao Xi was still holding Shao Wei's arm. He looked at her. "You okay?"
She nodded, her voice soft. "I'm fine. Thanks to you."
His eyes lingered on hers for a moment longer than necessary. Then he cleared his throat and stepped back. "Let's regroup."
Wu Mei turned toward the cliff edge, heart racing. "He'll be back. Stronger."
Qin Yangzhou nodded. "So will we."
They gathered near the fire pit again, relighting it with Shao Wei's now-controlled flames.
Everyone sat in silence, watching the fire crackle.
But beneath the calm, something had shifted.
A bond had deepened.
A power had awakened.
And far beyond the valley, in a land of forgotten thrones and ancient blood, Dracon opened his palm and studied the burn Shao Wei had left on him.
"She's stronger than I thought," he whispered.
"But everyone has a weakness."
He smiled.
"I just need to find hers."
