The God of Ice and Fire at Hogwarts

Chapter 186: Prevent the tragedy

"Stupefy!"

At the same time the Dark Mark appeared, Irwin waved his wand and recited the spell without hesitation.

There was another sharp sound, and the Dark Mark, which had originally glowed with a faint green light, suddenly turned into a pink marshmallow in the shape of a snake, which looked extremely amusing.

At this moment, the other young wizards felt nothing when they saw the skull spewing poisonous snakes. In their eyes, it could only be considered an extremely ugly pattern. They were born in the era after Voldemort's fall and did not understand the true meaning of the Dark Mark.

Of course, some of the younger Slytherins had heard more or less about the Dark Mark from their older family members, but their knowledge was limited to what the Dark Mark was, and they had never seen the real Dark Mark.

After all, after Voldemort's fall, casting the Dark Mark was tantamount to saying to the Ministry of Magic: "Look! I'm a Death Eater, come and catch me!"

The older members of these pure-blood families were not so foolish.

However, both Professor Lupin and Lynn's expressions changed when they saw the Dark Mark.

As mentioned earlier, when Irwin Foley was born, Voldemort had already fallen. Under normal circumstances, he should not have had the opportunity to come into contact with something like the Dark Mark, let alone consider it his greatest fear.

Although Professor Lupin was filled with doubts, he still had to continue with the lesson before him.

After asking Irwin to step back with the group, he called on the other students to step forward one by one and face the Boggart alone.

As time passed, all the young wizards in the professor's room successfully faced the Boggart.

This was not surprising. After all, those present were already fourth-year students. Their magical reserves had increased as they grew, and some spells that they may have struggled with initially, they could now cast with ease.

Moreover, creatures like Boggarts were merely textbooks for third-year students in Defense Against the Dark Arts.

Once the last young wizard successfully repelled the Boggart, Professor Lupin announced that class was dismissed.

After leaving the professor's room, Lynn's gaze fell on Irwin Foley, who was about to return to the Slytherin dormitory.

Irwin Foley was a Slytherin student he had met in first year, and over the past few years, they had been classmates in Potions and other courses that required pair work.

However, their friendship had been limited to the classroom, and Lynn had never known much about his classmate's private life.

"Irwin, can you tell me why the Dark Mark is your greatest fear?" Lynn asked with an inquisitive tone.

Upon hearing this, Irwin hesitated for a moment. But after thinking about Lynn's history over the past two years, he lowered his guard.

Irwin gave a slight nod, looked around, and said, "Let's talk in the common room."

The two then made their way to the Slytherin common room.

The small snakes of Slytherin were always busy. They sacrificed a lot for fame and fortune, and even in their free time, few were willing to stay in the common room, let alone during a break like this.

When Lynn and Irwin arrived in the Slytherin common room, it was empty except for them.

After confirming no one else was around, Irwin said, "Actually, when I was ten years old, I entered my father's study out of curiosity and accidentally saw a Pensieve memory that had been placed there."

"Then," Lynn asked, "does your fear of the Dark Mark come from that Pensieve memory?"

Irwin nodded and said, "Yes, although my father never joined the Dark Lord's camp, when the Dark Lord was at his peak, he forcibly summoned the patriarchs of all the pure-blood families, except for those in the Order of the Phoenix. My father was among them. The Dark Lord said that we, the patriarchs of pure-blood families, were witnesses to the Death Eaters' actions to 'cleanse' everything."

"'Cleanse everything'? I suppose it should have meant 'kill,' right?" Lynn casually remarked.

Irwin smiled bitterly and said, "Yes, the cleansing the Dark Lord spoke of was, in fact, death! He forced the patriarchs of the pure-blood families to witness the Death Eaters breaking into the homes of half-blood or muggle-born wizards and killing them all. He called this brutal massacre the 'cleansing of bloodlines.' Every time these Death Eaters killed a wizard, they released a Dark Mark that hung in the air at the scene."

Lynn pieced the whole story together and said, "So after your father returned, he placed that unbearable memory in the Pensieve, and you, who snuck in, saw it. That's why you have the Dark Mark's shadow as your greatest fear?"

Irwin said, "Yes, if it weren't for you and the little Gryffindor witch driving away the remaining soul of the Dark Lord two years ago, I'm sure I would have never been able to talk to you about this. Otherwise, it would have been impossible for me to share such personal matters."

Clearly, Lynn's glorious deeds in Hogwarts Castle over the past two years made Irwin unconsciously view him as a trustworthy person, which was why he spoke to him so openly about his private life.

Of course, it could not be ruled out that Irwin was young and immature, and did not know how to keep secrets that could become a source of influence for others.

Lynn gave a slight nod. He remained silent for a moment before asking, "You are very afraid of the Dark Mark. Then let me ask you, if you had the chance, would you be willing to stand on the opposite side and deal with it with us?"

Upon hearing Lynn's words, Irwin fell silent.

In his previous generation, when the choice came for the camp, his father chose prudence to protect himself and preserve the family's legacy.

And what about him? Would he choose to protect himself wisely as his father had done?

However, did he truly want to see that scene from the Pensieve again? Countless wizarding families torn apart—just for the so-called 'bloodline cleansing' of the Dark Lord?!

Thinking about this, Irwin's eyes gradually became firmer.

He looked directly at Lynn and said softly, "If the rumored resurrection of the Dark Lord truly happens, then I will stand on the opposite side of him in my own name. However, I will not drag my family into it. Therefore, I will not use any family power to take part in this confrontation that should never have existed."

"I will use my own strength to do everything in my power to prevent the tragedy that occurred in the Pensieve from happening again!"

Irwin said with determination.
