Chapter 15: 15. A woman's instincts
"Lloyd…" the woman called. Anna's frown deepened. Why did it sound intimate? Or was she the only one who heard it that way? Looking at Lloyd, his face was still blank, giving nothing away as if he didn't hear that."I finally found you, babe."
Anna stilled at that. "Babe?" she asked, unable to grasp what was going on. Anna shook her head, not wanting to believe the thought that just crossed her mind. But her heart sank when she saw his features soften as the other woman approached.
Looking back at her, Lloyd spoke, "I think it will be best if we said our goodbyes here. Let bygones be bygones," he then pried his hand off of her own and stepped back. "I don't want any misunderstanding, Miss Henshaw. My woman can be quite an overthinker and a jealous one at times."
Anna unconsciously took a step back as her hand shot to her chest, touching the spot above her heart. She could hear and feel the heavy and loud pounding of her chest, but she could have sworn she felt it shatter to pieces. How come it was still in there, beating? At that very moment, everything around her came to a stand still. His words and the title he had bestowed on another woman ringing loudly in her head.
"My woman…"
There was someone else now? Since when? Anna didn't even know what to do. She opened and closed her mouth, staring wide-eyed at Lloyd, who had suddenly raised a wall between them. A wall so high she almost couldn't imagine herself ever bridging it.
"Did I interrupt something?" The woman asked, now standing beside Lloyd and her eyes trained on Anna. "I am so sorry. I didn't know…"
"You didn't interrupt anything, Gen," Lloyd said. He smiled tenderly at her, which caused a confused frown to surface on her features.
"All right…?" She said skeptically. If she didn't interrupt, then what was wrong with the woman? Genevieve thought. She hooked her arm around his own, feeling a sense of satisfaction that she never thought she would feel just by hooking hands like this. "The guest will be arriving soon, Mother thought I should find you before they do."
A small frown tugged on his brows, but it disappeared even faster than it came, then he nodded his head. "Let's go," he said. His eyes met those of Anna briefly as he turned.
"Lloyd," Anna finally managed to call, and they both halted. "I am sorry. I hope I will be granted a chance to explain everything," she kept her voice steady despite her body trembling and fear crawling up and eating at her heart.
Lloyd looked over his shoulder, knowing Genevieve had her eyes on him. He tried as hard as he could not to let out any reaction that would raise her suspicion.
"Please…" Anna added.
Lloyd nodded softly before he turned his head again. "Let's go," he said to Genevieve. He didn't meet her gaze, although he could feel her eyes boring a hole through his face. Right now, he felt like a cheater but wasn't sure who he was truly cheating on.
Anna watched him go while holding another woman ever so dearly. She should have known he wouldn't just sit and wait. It's been five years now. They never saw each other or talked to each other during this course of time. It was only natural that he would have someone else by his side. But what puzzled her was why it was not included in the report Willow had given her.
Once they were out of sight, her legs gave way, and she nearly stumbled forward had Willow not rushed to her side at that very moment and held her up.
"Are you all right, Ma'am?" Willow asked, putting her hands around Anna's waist to help stabilize her footing.
"I don't know," Anna replied honestly. Her voice came out broken, just the same as her heart. But she had no one to blame beside herself for allowing her mother to rule over her for so long.
Once seated, Anna looked at Willow with narrowed eyes, confusing the woman. "Why was there no information about that woman in your report? I asked for everything," Anna asked. She stared at her with an accusing gaze, but Willow was quick to explain.
"No, no…it's not like that, ma'am. You see, that woman is Mr. Reigns' new girlfriend. He didn't have any by the time the investigations were conducted," Willow said, and Anna frownd.
That's barely two weeks ago. Anna thought.
"Are you sure about that?" Anna asked, and Willow nodded profusely.
"Mrs. Vivian Reigns wants him to get married, so she picked a few women for Mr. Reigns. I guess Miss Genevieve is the lucky one," Willow said with a little awkward laugh at the end.
Anna went silent after her statement. Perhaps she wasn't too late after all. It wasn't too late to have things go back to the way they used to be. If he had been single all that while, then that means…
"He hasn't forgotten me," Amna uttered under her breath. Her lips slowly curled up.
Everything was not over yet. Not just yet. All she got to do was remind him of their past and prove that she had cone to stay, and her feelings had never changed.
"Right, I can do this," she encouraged herself.
Meanwhile, once Lloyd was sure that they could no longer be seen, she stopped and peeled Genevieve's hand off of him. Genevieve was taken aback and was about to ask what happened but swallowed back her words when she saw the way he glared at her.
"Babe?" He asked and blinked, confused by what he was asking until it occurred to her that that was what she called him. She had done that without even thinking. Seeing him with a woman standing so close and even holding hands. She couldn't help it and wanted to assert her place beside him.
"I… I thought we were… we were already…" she stuttered, flustered that she had to explain that to him. What could she say? That she was jealous, and that's why?
"Forget it," Lloyd said while she looked down, feeling small under his gaze. "You don't have to follow me. I'll go check on Damian. You go ahead and make yourself comfortable." He left after saying, and she could only stare at his back till he went through a door and shut it.
There were no people yet, and even though there were, she wouldn't be able to fit in. Everyone coming was among the elites. A world she didn't belong to. How was she going to mingle and be comfortable?
"This is not fair at all. Leaving me like this," Genevieve murmure. Walking back, she spotted Anna seated with Willow beside her. Anna said something to Willow, and she bowed before leaving. "Great, another young miss." Genevieve sighed.
She could go to her and try making friends, but something about Anna just puts her off. She felt Anna was a threat. Call her paranoid, but it was a woman's instincts.
