The Heiress: Getting My Ex-Husband Back

Chapter 16: 16. They are not us

Evelyn and Carl arrived a while later, just minutes before the main event started. Her eyes scanned the premises, searching for one person. But she couldn't find her anywhere. Sighing, she turned to Carl.

"Help me find her. We are leaving together once the wedding and formalities are concluded," Even said, Carl could only nod his head.

"Understood, Madam," he said with a curt bow. But he didn't leave immediately. Making sure that Evelyn was seated and comfortable before he left her side to give the necessary instructions to the bodyguard that had accompanied them.

Meanwhile, Evelyn's eyes still scanned around.

On the other side, Anna was very much aware of her mother's gaze, having seen her walk in, she kept looking around. It was obvious what or perhaps, who she was searching for. Carl leaving her side was nothing short of a confirmation to Anna.

"Be careful from now on, Willow. Mother is here, and Carl is out hunting," Anna warned her. Willow, who didn't understand at first, blinked but then nodded her head as soon as it clicked.

"Right. Yes, ma'am," she replied, and Anna nodded.

Soon, the wedding commenced with Pearl being the first to be seen to step through the door. Her light yellow princess dress was breathtaking, and the bow behind it added more cuteness to her already adorable appearance. Seeing this, Anna felt tears at the edge of her eyes but had a warm and motherly smile on her lips.

How could she have stayed away from a child as lovely as this for so long? She asked herself.

"She is beautiful," Willow uttered, unable to take her eyes off the little form, walking forward while spreading the followers. The gems on the dress glistened beautifully, and her smile added even more beauty, captivating the people around.

"The bride isn't here yet, but everyone already seems blown away," someone said from beside Anna, and her smile widened.

"Do you know whose child she is? She is so lovely," a woman asked. The admiration in her voice was unmistakable. Anna could envision her eyes sparkling as she looked. She could tell because it was the same way thay she felt.

Her eyes were glistening with unshed tears, pride, and joy as the mother of the little girl, but her heart also ached, knowing she hadn't been a part of her life even till this moment.

"She is perfect, isn't she?" Anna whispered, but Willow, who heard her, nodded to her.

"She truly is," Willow agreed.

"I am never leaving her again. I will never leave them again," Anna uttered more as a promise to herself than to anyone else amd the whispers around faded into the background as she once again steeled her resolve.

Willow glanced at her but didn't say anything. She was finally able to put the pieces of the puzzle together and now understood what was truly going on. She had almost smacked herself in the face when figuring it out while asking herself why she was so slow to catch on.

Before Pearl could reach the middle of the hall, the bride appeared. Beside her was her uncle, who filled the role of her late father. Her dress was what anyone would only imagine wearing at their wedding. The extravagance spoke of how much must have been spent on it alone and not toe talk about the cost of the jewelry she had on her. Although they looked simple, it was no Brainerd to know that they were the real thing and would cost a fortune.

"The bride doesn't fall behind either. She is one beautiful lady. It's no wonder Mr Frost is so into her," the whispers resumed.

"I heard she had a scandal in the past. I wonder if it's true," another said, only to be quickly silenced by someone beside her.

"I know we are from the Frosts, but do not ignore who the lady is. Mr Frost won't take it lightly with anyone slandering his woman, and neither would she let you off if this gets to her. She is the new head of the Novas for goodness sake."

After he said that, everyone turned to look at the other lane only to see more dignitaries whom they could never have imagined meeting in one place like this.

"Yeah, she is dainty but no Saint."

They all agreed collectively.

Although the whispers still continued, it was less hostile and suggestive.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the hall, those of the Novas who heard their little whispers, albeit the music issuing the bride forward playing, could only smile smugly. Evelyn was one of these people.

"Melody is not someone anyone can ever look down on," she said, and the man standing beside her nodded his head.

"Like father, like daughter. With the face of an angel but…" he chuckled. "Say Evelyn, Anna's should be about the same age as Melody, right?" Evelyn nodded without speaking, being careful not to say anything that could bring unnecessary problems. "I was looking forward to meeting her today. I have heard so much about her, but you just keep her hidden. Is this some part of your big game plan, Evelyn?"

"I wish it was, Silas. But unfortunately, it isn't," Evelyn said. She was proud to hear that her daughter's hard work was noticed by someone like Mr. Silas McCain. "Anna just hates the public. If not for business, she won't even have a social life, and I sometimes worry for her."

"Children will always be children, Evelyn. I mean, look at Melody. Even while her family was alive, very few knew her. And when they passed on, we all assumed she did too. But here she is spreading her wings. Annabelle just needs a reason to do the same. When that time comes, I am sure all of your worries will be washed away." Silas said.

Evelyn could only smile while inwardly wondering if such a day would come. Anna was hell-bent on going against her. There was no way her worries would be taken away any time soon.

"Sometimes as parents, we have to let the children be who they want," Silas said again as if he could already tell what was running through Evelyn's mind. Evelyn gave him a side glance but didn't speak.

"They tend to do better when left in control of their own life and decisions. We might have grown up with strict parents, but that also helps us to understand the pain and struggle behind being raised that way. Because we came out successful as our parents had envisioned and we grew to love who we are now, does not mean that they will. They are not us."
