Chapter 17: Chapter 13 - Small Meeting With Sung Jin-woo

I got a phone call from the chief inspector of the Hunter Association, Woo Jin Chul. I had already asked him to let me know when the E-Rank Hunter, the survivor from the Double Dungeon case, woke up. He did just that, saying the guy was awake and I could meet him.

The survivor was still in the hospital, recovering, as Chief Woo mentioned. He planned to meet him today too.

This guy, the weakest hunter of all, that's what everyone calls him. Naturally, when something terrible happened, people thought he'd be the first to go because he was the weakest in the team.

But surprisingly, he was one of the few who made it out alive. This made people suspicious, and he became the focus of their questions.

When someone becomes a hunter, they get a rank, and it's nearly impossible to change that rank, no matter how much they train.

Almost impossible, I say.

Why's that?

Well, there's this thing called double reawakening. It's rare, but it can happen, where even an E-Rank hunter like Sung Jin-Woo, our weakest hunter, can suddenly become an S-Rank.

It doesn't happen often, but there have been cases, like when Cha Hae-In, the Vice President of the Hunters Guild, reawakened as an S-Rank Hunter two years ago.

Chief Woo suspects that something similar might have happened with Sung Jin-Woo. If he's reawakened, then he might have become an S-Rank.

If that's true, it would explain how he survived the Double Dungeon incident. But if it's not the case, the Hunter Association will keep investigating.

Anyway, I'm just really curious about this Sung Jin-Woo guy. So when Chief Woo called, I immediately agreed to meet him.

I got ready to head to the hospital where Sung Jin-Woo was staying and soon arrived there.

"Good morning!" Chief Woo Jin Chul greeted me with another person by his side, probably his assistant. I didn't ask though.

"Good morning! So, are you just back from seeing him or...?"

"No, I was waiting for you. Didn't wait long, thankfully. Now that you're here, let's go."

"Yeah, sure. And thanks for letting me know about this," I said sincerely. He didn't have to, but he did.

We headed to the elevator since Sung Jin-Woo's room was on one of the upper floors.

"Don't mean to pry, but have you thought about joining any guild yet?" Woo Jin Chul asked as we entered the elevator.

"No... I don't think I'll join any guild, at least not for now. Maybe not ever."

"Mind sharing why? Maybe I can help you figure it out."

"Well, I want to be my own person, you know? I want to be independent and work on my own terms. I'm not sure yet, but I'm pretty certain I don't want to join a guild."

"I see. As an S-Rank hunter, starting your own guild could be an option," he said as the elevator doors opened.

"Yeah, that's an option too," I replied, thinking about how I'd already considered starting my own guild. I had a plan for it, but I didn't need to share all my thoughts with him right now.

"You've done the evaluation already, right?" I asked as we stepped out of the elevator.

"You knew?"

"Yeah!" I could often read people pretty well, thanks to the heightened perception my eyes gave me.

"So you even know that he's still an E-Rank according to our evaluation," he said.

"That's okay. I just want to meet him for myself," I replied.

He nodded, and we walked up to the room where Sung Jin-Woo was. The first thing I noticed was a young girl leaning against the wall next to the door. She had a hood up, almost covering her face, and she was busy on her phone.

When we suddenly appeared in front of her, she looked up in surprise. "What...!" She seemed startled and then looked between me and Chief Woo, her eyes widening.

"S-Rank Hunter... Naruto Uzumaki..." she stammered.

"Don't worry. We're just here to see Sung Jin-Woo. Are you here to see him too?" Chief Woo asked, trying to calm her down.

"I..." she started to say, but the door to the room opened suddenly. Another girl stepped out, and she looked just as surprised as the first.

"Don't be afraid or surprised. We're just here to meet Sung Jin-Woo. Are you his..." Chief Woo began to ask.

"Sister!" she quickly interrupted, finishing the sentence.

"Yeah, he is from the Hunter Association. No need to worry," I reassured her.

"Okay..." she said, stepping aside from the door.

As we stepped into the hospital room, there was a normal-looking boy sitting on the bed, staring at something in front of him. He noticed us pretty quickly.

"Hi, Sung Jin-Woo, did we disturb you?" I asked after Chief Woo introduced me. It seemed like he'd already mentioned my visit to him beforehand.

Since the announcement of the 10th S-Rank Hunter—me—happened around the same time as the Double Dungeon incident, it wasn't surprising that Sung Jin-Woo didn't recognize me.

"No... no, it's okay," he said quickly, although it felt like his mind was somewhere else. He seemed surprised and confused about something specific, but I couldn't quite figure it out, even with my usual perception.

"So, are you doing well now?" I asked him.

"Yeah, I think I am doing better now," he replied, though the confused look stayed on his face.

"Don't worry about my visit. I just wanted to check if you were doing alright," I said.

Even though I planned to leave after those words, something about him felt different. I couldn't explain it, but there was a unique vibe about him that I didn't get from others, not even from other hunters. It wasn't just a fluke.

However, since I couldn't quite put it into words, I couldn't ask him anything too unexpected. I needed to ask a few questions to figure out what was giving me this different feeling.

"Do you have anything more to ask?" Woo Jin Chul asked me. I was trying to find out more but couldn't, so I decided to wrap it up.

"Sorry for the sudden visit. You can rest now. We'll take our leave," I said to Sung Jin-Woo, noticing his expression hadn't changed much as we left the room.

"Thanks for remembering my request and calling me," I thanked Chief Woo Jin Chul.

"It's no problem," he replied.

We parted ways, and I headed back to my apartment. When I got home, I found an email from the White Tigers Guild. They offered a one-time contract to join their raid team for an A-Rank dungeon raid.

I accepted it right away since the raid was near my place, so it wouldn't take long to get there. It was scheduled for tomorrow morning.

It would be my first time jumping from a C-Rank to an A-Rank raid. I felt excited about it.
