Chapter 1 - Broken Engagement
Gransen, the capital of the Palazhinia Kingdom.
The Gransen Academy is the largest facility in Gransen after the royal palace.
And I, Kyo Wentos, a first-year student at this Gransen Academy, was in a state of confusion.
The cause was the blue-haired girl standing in front of me, Liliana Edwin.
‘Why on earth?’
This question had filled my mind for dozens of seconds.
I thought my relationship with Liliana was quite good… at least I believed so.
Since becoming engaged to her, I had built a good relationship with her, without any major fights except for minor squabbles.
I was confident that we had a rather intimate relationship for an engaged couple, meeting two or three times a week to have tea together or go on dates.
Then was it a problem with me personally?
Not to boast, but I’m confident that my appearance is decent.
Even in the original story, my looks were described as handsome in a single line—that’s how acceptable my appearance was.
My grades weren’t bad either, as I studied until my eyesight deteriorated, allowing me to rank in the upper-middle tier in the entrance exams.
I had also trained in martial arts and magic enough to be in the upper ranks, if not among the top-ranked.
No matter how much I thought about our relationship or my own issues, I couldn’t find the answer.
If I couldn’t figure it out by thinking, I had no choice but to ask the person involved.
“Lili… Have I upset you in some way?”
Liliana didn’t say anything in response to my question, just staring at me intently with her deep blue eyes.
After about ten seconds, Liliana’s firmly closed lips finally opened.
“Kyo, you haven’t done anything wrong.”
Her blue eyes were filled with guilt.
“This is entirely my problem.”
And then another ten seconds.
“I’ve fallen in love with someone.”
My eyes widened.
Liliana seemed unable to meet my gaze anymore and was looking at the floor.
“I’m in love with someone who isn’t you.”
My eyes were looking straight at her, but she couldn’t meet my gaze.
“How could I continue being engaged to you when I’m like this?”
I couldn’t say anything.
After spending over ten years together with her, loving her.
I thought we were in love with each other
But she wasn’t.
Unable to say anything, I looked up at the sky.
From the academy rooftop, the protective barrier covering the capital glimmered in the sky.
After a moment, a thought struck me like lightning, and I turned my gaze to her and opened my mouth.
“Allen…”
“…!”
She, who had been hanging her head low, looked at me with a surprised face.
“Allen Ludwig?”
“You knew…?”
No.
I had no idea at all.
But when I think about the original story, the story I had read before coming to this world, the timing matches perfectly.
During the two months after entering the academy, Liliana experienced several romantic comedy-like happenings with the protagonist Allen and gradually became attracted to him.
But she had a fiancé, and Liliana, who was psychologically intimidated by her fiancé, had been living with her feelings for Allen half-abandoned.
Then Allen, who happened to discover Liliana being persecuted by her fiancé, gets involved with the fiancé, defeats him, and rescues Liliana.
And Liliana, who successfully broke off her engagement, decides to be honest with her feelings and turns to Allen.
Yes, it’s truly a classic love story.
If I wasn’t the one involved, that is.
The difference from the original story was that my relationship with Liliana was extremely good…or so I thought.
In other words, Liliana had no reason to feel intimidated by me.
Liliana, who had become attracted to Allen, immediately decided to be honest with her feelings and declared our separation.
How honest she is.
And how selfish.
“Kyo, I love Allen…”
“Stop…”
“I love Allen.”
“I said stop!”
A voice so loud and full of indignation came out of my mouth, surprising even myself.
But she continued talking.
As she spoke about Allen, those eyes that somehow seemed so empty looked too unfamiliar, too frightening, that I couldn’t help but shout at her angrily.
“This is entirely my fault, and you’ve done nothing wrong.”
“Lili…please…!”
“This is my selfishness. It doesn’t matter whether it’s me or my father.”
What does that mean?
Since an engagement is usually a promise between families, what does she mean her father, Baron Edwin, doesn’t matter?
Does that mean this is Lili’s unilateral decision?
“Lili…what are you thinking…”
“……”
She said nothing.
“Lili…this isn’t right, we should first report to our families…”
“Even so…my decision won’t change.”
This is madness.
It’s madness, but there she was, saying it in all seriousness.
I even wondered if she really was Lili.
Liliana bowed at the waist and said goodbye.
“I’m sorry, and thank you for everything until now.”
“Lili…wait…!”
“Goodbye.”
And she turned her back and left that place.
I was left sitting alone on the spacious rooftop of Gransen Academy.
It was almost time for afternoon classes to begin, but I had no desire to attend.
With the pointless thought that my first time skipping class after entering the academy would be on a day like this, I lay down right where I was sitting.
I had spared no effort to prevent the breakup with Liliana, to prevent my downfall.
I sincerely loved Liliana and built our relationship.
But this is the result.
I avoided ruin, but I couldn’t prevent the breakup with Liliana.
She went to the protagonist Allen’s side, just as in the original story.
“Damn it…”
I struck the floor with my fist while lying down, but only my hand hurt.
I was starting to get tired of everything.
The only goal I had set after falling into this world was to live happily with Liliana, whom I liked, but that goal had now flown away.
“Excuse me…”
I have a younger brother who has been trying to surpass me since childhood
Should I give up everything and just hide away in the mountains?
“Hello? Can’t you hear me?”
I’ve trained various skills, maybe becoming an adventurer and exploring here and there wouldn’t be so bad.
Since the original story only showed limited areas including the academy, it might be nice to travel to unknown regions.
“Excuse me!!”
“Waaah?!”
Startled by the sudden loud voice, I quickly sat up.
Naturally, my head turned toward the source of the voice, and what entered my eyes were two burning red eyes.
When I collected myself and widened my view, I saw crimson hair similar to the eye color, and I could identify who this person was.
“Riel Ignis…?”
“Oh, you know my name!”
Riel Ignis.
The daughter of Duke Ignis, a gifted young woman boasting excellent magical skills and top grades in her year.
And the main heroine of the original story of this world, ‘Child of Yggdrasil.’
But even as I uttered her identity, I couldn’t be certain, and my words ended in a questioning tone.
But it couldn’t be helped.
Riel Ignis, the main heroine of ‘Child of Yggdrasil.’
She’s the childhood friend of the protagonist Allen, but she has a cool character with a quiet personality that doesn’t openly express emotions and is wary of others.
Yes, the Riel Ignis I knew was definitely such a person.
And during these two months, the Riel Ignis I had seen in the classroom was exactly as she appeared in the original story.
“We’ve never talked before, but you know my name! Could it be you have a crush on me~”
“????”
Then who on earth is this energetic girl chattering in front of me?
“I’m just joking, of course that can’t be true since you have Liliana!”
Am I seeing things due to the shock of being dumped by Liliana?
Just to be sure, I stamped my foot on the ground to shock myself, but the Riel Ignis in front of me didn’t disappear.
Not a hallucination, it seems.
“It’s almost time for class to start, and I couldn’t see you anywhere. I thought I caught a glimpse of you going to the rooftop during lunch, so I came to check, and here you are.”
“Uh…”
“Come on, let’s get back. You know how scary Professor Hauser, the history teacher, can be—we all experienced that last month!”
Riel grabbed my hand firmly and was about to take the lead.
I was still unable to collect my thoughts and stood frozen in place.
When I didn’t move, she turned back to look at me.
“Kyo? We’ll be late at this rate!”
“Um…that…well…”
“……”
As I stammered, Riel suddenly stopped speaking and the strength drained from her hand.
Looking at her, I saw she was staring directly into my eyes.
“Kyo? Have you been crying?”
“!!”
She must have noticed the dried tears around my eyes.
I tried to quickly pull my hand away to wipe around my eyes, but she didn’t let go of my hand.
“What happened?”
Perhaps I was inwardly defeated by her serious expression.
I found myself telling her about what had just happened, even though she had nothing to do with this situation.
Until the end of my story, Riel sat beside me without saying a word, just listening.
We heard the bell for class ring during this time, but she still said nothing and just listened.
And when I finished speaking, she held my hand, which she had been holding, with her other hand as well.
“That must have been really hard for you.”
“…”
It was a clichéd comfort, but right now, it was more appreciated than anything else.
“Honestly, even from my perspective, you and Liliana seemed like a good couple, so it doesn’t really make sense…”
Riel’s eyes turned toward empty space.
“But Allen…Allen, huh…”
Of course.
Allen is the protagonist and Riel is the main heroine.
Naturally, she wouldn’t feel good about Liliana liking Allen.
Of course, in the story, Allen likes Riel and only has eyes for her.
There are other sub-heroines like Liliana who give their hearts to Allen, and eventually he ends up with all of them, but Allen almost always only looks at Riel until the very end.
The same is true for Riel.
Due to her characteristically quiet nature, she doesn’t directly express her affection until the middle to late part of the novel, but she is always with Allen and has watched over him.
Not knowing what to say to Riel, I sat quietly looking at the floor, when Riel’s voice reached me.
“What’s so great about that terrible guy that everyone’s going crazy over him?”
…
……
Huh?
