Chapter 53: Chapter 53: Incident at Cocoyasi Village
East Blue, Loguetown, A Small Tavern
"Jingle—" The wooden door of the tavern was pushed open, and the bell tinkled crisply. The few patrons inside looked up and immediately stood up in respect. Captain "White Hunter" Smoker had walked in with three people.
"Captain Smoker!" The owner hurried to greet them. "What brings you here today..."
"The usual spot," Smoker said, a cigar in his mouth, glancing at Roy and the two kids behind him in the swirling smoke. "And two glasses of milk."
"Right away!" The owner quickly went to prepare.
"Wow, this place is so cool!" Luffy was like a kid in an amusement park, excitedly looking around, clinging to the back of a chair.
Ace, on the other hand, frowned, his tone dissatisfied. "You said 'milk'? I'm 12 years old. Can I have some booze?"
Smoker turned back and snorted coldly. "A little brat wants to drink booze? Master your fire control first."
"What did you say?!" Ace's temper flared, and his fists lit up.
"Alright, alright," Roy pressed his head down and took the drink the owner had brought. "Don't wreck the place."
The owner, minding his own business, put down the drinks and then brought over a large plate of freshly grilled beef. "This is our specialty, a treat for Captain Smoker and his honored guests." (Note: Ever since Smoker had been stationed in Loguetown, he had cracked down hard on pirates, never letting a single one escape, and there had never been a single civilian casualty. He was deeply loved by the local people.)
Smoker nodded slightly, and the owner, taking the hint, tactfully retreated. The brass lamp cast its glow, and the corner of the tavern quieted down, with only the sound of clinking glasses and the occasional creak of a wooden chair.
Smoker blew out a ring of smoke, leaned back in his chair, and lowered his voice. "Spit it out. You suddenly show up in the East Blue, with two 'time bombs,' what exactly are you here to investigate?"
Roy took a sip of his drink, gently swirling the glass in his hand, his smile fading. "Shanks's arm... what do you know?"
"Heh," Smoker sneered, his eyes turning sharp. "A great pirate from the New World getting his arm bitten off by a Sea King in the East Blue? It's hard for anyone to believe, right?" He paused. "Besides, you've fought him before. Do you think it's reasonable?"
Roy nodded. "Forget a Sea King... the 'pets' in these waters, they'd have a hard time even getting a taste of my shoe, let alone my arm."
Smoker snorted coldly, took out a crumpled intelligence report from his coat, and pushed it to Roy. "You've seen the report from Headquarters, but I've found out something else over here."
Roy opened it, and his brow furrowed. "Satsuruso Kingdom?"
"Mm," Smoker lit another cigar. "A week before he lost his arm, the Red Force made a brief stop there. It's said he met with a certain royal family member in private."
"Meeting with a pirate of Shanks's level? Are the royals still alive?" Roy raised an eyebrow, his fingertips tapping the table rhythmically. "It seems something was exchanged."
"That's what I guessed too," Smoker frowned. "But that kingdom has recently blocked almost all of its port departure records."
"...This matter is not clean," Roy said in a low voice. "It's not about the arm, it's about Shanks's own movements and motives."
"What exactly is he hiding?" Smoker's gaze was like a torch.
Roy's fingers tapped gently on the table, lost in thought. Just then, Luffy suddenly leaned over, his nose almost touching the report. "Wow! What's this? A treasure map?"
Ace pulled him back, his face red. "Don't touch important documents, you idiot, Luffy!"
Smoker's cheek twitched, and he suppressed his anger. "Roy, can you please move your two living bombs a little further away?"
"Don't be so harsh~ They're still young," Roy smiled, put away the report, and patted Smoker's shoulder. "Thanks, old friend. This is very useful to me."
Smoker snorted. "Don't cause any trouble. I don't want to clean up your mess."
Roy laughed. "You're one to talk about cleaning up messes. Every time I see Hina, she never fails to complain about how she helps you solve the trouble you cause by disobeying your superiors."
Just as they were bantering—
"BANG!"
The tavern door was thrown open. The bell was knocked out of tune, startling the patrons, who all turned to look. A communications officer in a crumpled uniform stumbled in, his hat almost covering his nose. "R-Report, Captain Smoker! Urgent intelligence! A distress signal from Cocoyasi Village! A pirate crew is launching a large-scale attack on the village!"
"What?!" Smoker shot up, his chair clattering to the floor, the cigar falling from his mouth. "What trash pirates?! They've got a death wish, do they?" He snatched the military cap from the table and rushed out. "Assemble the troops, prepare to move out!"
"No rush~" Roy's light voice sounded from behind him, with his usual laziness and smile.
Smoker turned back. Roy was still leaning back in his chair, swirling his drink, but his eyes had already turned sharp. "Let us go."
"You?" Smoker frowned. "This is the East Blue. We don't need Headquarters to intervene."
"It will take you at least twenty minutes to mobilize your troops," Roy stood up and patted the drink off his clothes. "It'll take me two minutes to get there." He lazily pointed out the window. "While you're still dispatching your troops, I'll have already chopped up that trash and fed them to the fish~"
"You bastard!" A vein throbbed on Smoker's forehead. But before he could finish—
"Swoosh!" Ace stood up, and pale blue flames instantly enveloped his arms, his fighting spirit blazing. "Finally, some real action!"
Luffy jumped onto the table. "Are we going to fight? Fight? I'm going to send all those bad guys flying!"
"Clang!" The owner, who was about to bring over a plate of grilled fish, was so scared he dropped it on the floor.
Smoker looked at the two eager kids, then at Roy, whose face was written all over with "I'm going to meddle," and finally ran a hand through his hair in frustration. "Do whatever you want! Just don't cause too much of a stir!"
"Leave it to us," Roy smiled and stood up, picking up Ace and Luffy, one in each hand. "Let's go, it's bad guy-beating time."
"Beat up pirates!" Luffy shouted excitedly, waving his fists in the air.
The next second—
Swish!
A strong gust of wind shook the entire tavern. The curtains billowed, and the three figures had already vanished.
"Wh-where did they go?!" the communications officer was dumbfounded.
Smoker put a new cigar in his mouth and took a deep drag. "Rear Admiral Roy from Headquarters is personally taking action... what's there to be afraid of?" He turned and walked out of the tavern, leaving a lazy order behind. "Send a reply. That trash won't live to see tonight."
Hearing the name "Rear Admiral Roy," the communications officer's expression turned solemn, and he nodded vigorously. "Understood!"
High above the East Blue
The wind was like a knife, roaring in their ears. Ace was blown so hard he couldn't open his eyes, his hair flying everywhere. "Hey! Big Bro Roy! Can you give us a warning next time before you..."
"Woooooow!!!" Luffy, on the other hand, was shouting excitedly in the air. "We're flying! It's more exciting than swinging on vines!! Can I just flying kick them from the sky?!"
Roy held the two of them with one hand, standing in mid-air as if on solid ground, his gaze as calm as a blade. In the distance, a thick plume of black smoke was rising from the coastline.
"Cocoyasi Village," he said in a low voice, without a trace of emotion.
On the sea below, a pirate ship with a shark design was approaching the beach. Its bow had a serrated nose, and a giant sea beast was churning at its side. The pirate flag fluttered in the wind: "Arlong Pirates."
"Arlong..." Roy narrowed his eyes. "The trash that fat-headed fish got out of Impel Down after joining the Shichibukai. He really dares to run wild."
He looked at the two boys beside him. "Today's fight," a smile appeared on his lips, "is for you two."
Ace clenched his burning fists, his eyes fiery.
"I can do it too!!" Luffy laughed while waving his arms. "Watch me punch that fish-man leader into a fried fish fillet!!"
"Alright," Roy chuckled, and with a move, the three of them became a streak of light, cutting through the sky and heading straight for the battlefield.
