Chapter 101: 101: The Valkyrie's Blessing

The goshawk screeched sharply in the gloomy sky.

Kevin, donning the eagle feathers gifted to him by the goddess of beauty, Freya, soared through the air, his sharp gaze scanning the dark mountains ahead with a glimmer of doubt in his eyes.

The lair of the evil dragon Fafnir was not difficult to locate. The overwhelming magic emanating from it was responsible for the strange weather and altered environment surrounding it.

Feeling the unrestrained flow of magic in the air, Kevin trailed its source. After nearly half an hour of flight, he arrived outside Fafnir's lair.

He folded his wings and perched on a branch some distance away, tilting his head to take in the ominous sight of the cave. He confirmed that this was indeed Fafnir's nest but hesitated for a moment, falling into deep thought.

Should I go in and take a closer look?

As the thought crossed his mind, Kevin, still in his hawk form, was prepared to take off and investigate. However, before he could flap his wings, the ground beneath him trembled violently, nearly causing him to lose his footing on the branch.

Then, emerging from the cavernous depths of the lair, a massive black dragon strode forward.

Its scarlet eyes scanned the surroundings, locking onto Kevin, perched on the branch, who had intruded into its territory.

Thanks to the goshawk feathers granted by Freya, Fafnir failed to recognize Kevin's true identity.

Kevin's heart stirred as he observed the creature's appearance, though his expression remained calm. He had faced far greater threats, from Fenrir to the mountain giant Shaki.

His gaze fixed on the dragon, Kevin noticed the object of his mission—the golden ring, glinting faintly on Fafnir's left claw.

Fafnir, meanwhile, regarded the tiny goshawk with mild curiosity. It tilted its massive head slightly, but soon lost interest, turning its attention skyward. With each of its deep breaths, the oppressive magic power it exuded thickened the air.

Then, spreading its enormous wings, Fafnir unleashed a powerful gale as it took off into the sky in search of food.

Kevin watched the dragon's hulking figure disappear into the clouds. Once he was sure the beast had left, he spread his own wings and took flight, returning to the spot where Slude and Siegfried had been waiting for him to finish his reconnaissance.

After more than half an hour of flight, Kevin found Slude and Siegfried. The scene that greeted him left him momentarily curious.

Slude was clad in her striking Valkyrie armor, her shield strapped to her left arm and a golden pseudo-divine spear held high in her right. Her face bore a solemn expression as she chanted, her voice imbued with an almost sacred resonance.

Siegfried, meanwhile, knelt before her, gripping the hilt of his greatsword with both hands, its blade resting firmly on the ground.

A faint golden light radiated from Slude, her long, golden hair flowing gently in an invisible breeze. Magic rippled outward from her as she performed her ritual.

Kevin, still in his goshawk form, landed nearby and observed with keen interest.

Slude completed her chant and extended her pseudo-divine spear, resting it atop Siegfried's sword. Runes materialized in the air, glowing faintly as she etched them into the blade.

Kevin immediately recognized the buffs being applied—sharpness, durability, toughness.

Then, turning her focus to Siegfried himself, Slude imbued him with additional blessings, enhancing his strength, endurance, and speed.

When the golden light finally dissipated, Siegfried rose to his feet. His entire body, as well as his sword, now radiated with a faint golden glow.

Kevin removed the goshawk feathers, returning to his human form, and approached the pair with curiosity.

"What exactly are you doing?" he asked.

"The Blessing of the Valkyrie," Siegfried answered, his voice steady. "It's said that a warrior blessed by a Valkyrie will be invincible on the battlefield!"

"Blessing of the Valkyrie? That sounds amazing!" Kevin's eyes lit up as he turned eagerly to Slude. "Hey, give me one too!"

Slude glanced at him, her long hair slightly disheveled by the wind. "Don't you already know how to use runes yourself?"

"But runes have no sense of ceremony. They're not cool!" Kevin said excitedly. "Come on, I'm fighting too, aren't I? Bless me as well! Wait—hold on a second... now that I think about it, you've never blessed me before!"

Slude raised an eyebrow. "Most people would call what you do mischief, not a battle to the death!"

Kevin winced, sensing her pointed sarcasm.

Slude's mind wandered briefly to the past. When they first ventured into Jotunheim together, she had considered blessing Kevin. But on the first day, her identity had been exposed, and by the second, gifts had been delivered to them by giants.

In the end, the thought of blessing him had been abandoned entirely.

"Hey! Is that any way to talk to your master?" Kevin protested. "Don't I risk my life every time I fight? You must be holding a grudge against me, huh?

"Oh, I know—you're still mad about that time I used your shield as a frisbee for Fenrir!"

At the mention of this, Slude's eyebrow twitched. If Kevin hadn't brought it up, she might have forgotten about that incident. Now, all it did was reignite her irritation.

"Ugh, forget it," she muttered under her breath, turning her attention back to Siegfried. "How do you feel now?"

Siegfried, who had grown accustomed to Kevin's antics over the past week, examined the blessings coursing through him. He nodded at Slude, his expression serious.

The enhancement was remarkable. His strength, speed, and endurance had all increased significantly.

Slude, satisfied, adjusted her spear and prepared herself for what lay ahead.

"Slude, come on, let's talk this out," Kevin began again, switching to a more conciliatory tone. "I'm sorry, okay? I won't do it again. Just give me your blessing too!"

Slude sighed, smiling faintly. "You already know how to use runes, and your magic comes from me. Why are you still asking me for blessings?"

"Well, because…" Kevin hesitated, then grinned sheepishly. "It just feels... official!"

But Slude's smile shifted into something sly. "Are you sure? You know what happens when I bless someone, right?"

"Huh?" Kevin tilted his head in confusion.

Slude explained, her voice calm but her words heavy with meaning. "The warriors I bless usually find themselves in Valhalla not long after. Are you certain you want my blessing?"

Kevin froze, his mind racing.

Slude's words dawned on Siegfried as well, and his face grew pale. Valhalla? Didn't that mean... death?

Kevin scratched his head, laughing nervously. "A fatal blessing, huh? Well, uh… maybe you should just keep blessing Siegfried then!"

"Wait, what?!" Siegfried stared at Kevin, wide-eyed.

"Oh, by the way," Kevin interjected casually, "I saw the evil dragon Fafnir earlier."

His sudden statement left Slude and Siegfried momentarily stunned.

Kevin described everything he had observed.

"Wait," Siegfried said, his voice tinged with disbelief. "Weren't you just scouting? Why did you get so close to the dragon?"

Slude shook her head, a faint smile on her lips. "To be honest, I half-expected him to start a fight with Fafnir while scouting. I was ready to rush over and help."

Kevin scratched his cheek, embarrassed. "Well... I wasn't planning to, but if it had attacked, I wouldn't have run away."

His tone grew serious as he recalled his encounter. "That dragon is stronger than I thought. The pressure it exudes is comparable to the giant guards I fought in Jotunheim.

"I believe the golden ring is to blame for its transformation," Slude said thoughtfully. "The curse amplifies greed and madness. The Fafnir we face now may no longer be a dwarf but a true evil dragon!"

Kevin and Siegfried exchanged glances, understanding the gravity of her words.

"If the ring's curse is that strong…" Siegfried asked hesitantly, "Kevin, are you sure you want to touch it?"

Kevin's eyes gleamed with determination. "If it's cursed, then I'll just break the curse. That's all there is to it."
