Chapter 65: 65:Unless...
The blessing of a god is a rare and precious gift, not something granted lightly. To bestow such a blessing means sharing a fragment of divine "power," a part of oneself.
And now, Kevin had received blessings from not one but two gods—both of significant status.
The first came from Lugur, the god of light and the sun, the next king of the Tuatha Dé Danann. Lugur's blessing was tied to Kevin's possession of the magic sword Fragrak, ensuring no other god could take it from him. It also enhanced the sword's already formidable powers, doubling its damage in sunlight.
The second blessing, however, was even more remarkable. Hodr, the goddess of darkness and twin sister of Balder, granted Kevin her protection. This gift allowed Kevin to detect his enemies in the cover of darkness, making it impossible for them to hide from him as long as he identified them as foes.
This was no ordinary blessing—it represented the highest level of protection Hodr could offer.
Hodr, standing in her doorway with her waist-length black hair shimmering under the moonlight, gently removed her hands from Kevin's face. She took a step back, her smile soft and radiant. Though her sightless eyes could not see him, she knew Kevin was stunned.
His silence brought her a quiet joy. It felt as though her playful "prank" had succeeded.
"Kevin," she said softly, breaking the moment, "when you return, let's chat again, all right?"
Kevin blinked, struggling to find his words. "H-Hmm… Hmm…" he stammered, still reeling from the impact of her blessing.
Satisfied, Hodr turned away, brushing her hand along the fence for guidance as she walked inside.
"Hodr!"
Her steps paused. She turned back toward Kevin, tilting her head slightly.
"Um…" Kevin opened his mouth to speak, hesitating several times before finally taking a deep breath and smiling. "When I return, let's talk more. I'll tell you all the interesting things you haven't had the chance to hear yet!"
Hodr's lips curved into a warm smile. "Yes. I'll wait for you."
Kevin stood outside for a moment, watching until the door closed behind her. Then he turned and began walking back. To his surprise, he found Queen Frigga sitting calmly on a stone bench nearby, as if waiting for him.
"It seems…" Frigga, noble and serene in her white robes, looked at Kevin and smiled. "That child has truly blessed you."
Kevin blinked, startled by her presence. He bowed deeply. "Lady Frigga—"
But Frigga stepped aside lightly, dodging his salute. "No need for such formalities," she said warmly. "You are Balder and Hodr's brother now. That makes you no stranger to me."
Though her words were kind, Kevin couldn't help but feel awkward, unsure of how to respond.
Frigga chuckled at his discomfort. "Would you care to walk with me?"
As they walked toward the Palace of Light, Frigga's voice was soft, yet her words carried a weight that commanded attention.
"In truth, Hodr and I have known of you for over a year."
"What?!" Kevin's shock was evident.
"Your father, Lugur, spoke to Balder about exchanging something for Fenrir's blood over a year ago. I refused the proposal then," Frigga explained. "But I had a feeling you would come to us eventually.
"After all," she continued, her tone contemplative, "you are the disciple of Scathach and the beloved son of Lugur. I knew you wouldn't let Fenrir's blood slip away easily. And you, a warrior who ventured into the Kingdom of Magic Mirror Shadow, would not back down from such a challenge."
Kevin listened intently, the pieces of the puzzle starting to fall into place.
"Still, your fate was hidden from me, as it is from everyone. You do not exist in the 'present,' 'past,' or 'future,' so I didn't tell the God-King about you. But I shared my thoughts with Balder, and she's been keeping an eye on your story ever since."
Kevin's eyes widened. "Could it be that you…"
Frigga smiled knowingly. "That's right. Since then, I've been quietly watching as well."
Kevin suddenly felt a sense of clarity. His smooth experience in the Aesir realm now made more sense. He had always attributed his good fortune to Balder's enthusiasm, but now he realized Queen Frigga had been silently supporting him all along.
"You don't need to overthink it," Frigga said gently, reading his thoughts. "I didn't do anything extraordinary, merely spoke a few words here and there. The rest was simply… meant to be."
As they reached a fork in the road, Frigga stopped and turned to face Kevin. Her expression softened as she spoke again.
"I am grateful for the changes you've brought to Hodr. She hasn't been this happy in a long time."
Kevin hesitated, then ventured cautiously, "Lady Frigga, is there no way to heal Sister Hodr's eyes?"
Frigga's smile faltered slightly. "It is the price she pays as the Aesir's God of Darkness. There is no remedy…" She paused, then added cryptically, "Unless…"
Before Kevin could press her further, Frigga shook her head and walked away, leaving him to ponder her unfinished sentence.
"Unless… what?" Kevin muttered under his breath. He considered chasing after her but decided against it. If Frigga chose not to elaborate, there was likely nothing more he could do at the moment.
"I wonder if Sister Balder knows about this," Kevin mused as he continued toward the Palace of Light.
As he approached the palace, Neil, the little bird, swooped down and landed on his shoulder, flapping her wings excitedly.
"Kevin! Hurry back to your room!" she squawked urgently.
Kevin frowned. "What's going on?"
"Loki, the god of trickery, is waiting for you!"
"Loki?!" Kevin stopped in his tracks, his heart skipping a beat.
Neil nodded vigorously. "Yes! He's in your room right now!"
