Chapter 66: 66: Seeing the Light
When Kevin and Neil entered the room, they immediately noticed two familiar figures—Balder, the goddess of light, and Loki, the god of trickery—engaged in conversation. Slude stood silently off to the side.
Loki sat comfortably, his signature mischievous smile gracing his handsome face. When his piercing gaze met Kevin's, it held a glint of amusement, as though he already knew the questions swirling in Kevin's mind.
"Kevin," Balder greeted, her flawless golden hair cascading over her shoulders as she stood to address him. Her blue eyes, radiant as the sky, flicked briefly between Loki and Kevin.
Kevin gave her a slight shake of the head, silently signaling he had no idea why Loki was here either.
"Sit down," Loki said smoothly, gesturing to an empty stool nearby. His tone was friendly, but the undercurrent of his words hinted at an ulterior motive.
Balder hesitated, her gaze sharp on Loki, but ultimately she returned to her seat. Kevin complied, cautiously taking the seat beside Loki.
"Lord Loki," Kevin began carefully, "I take it your visit has something to do with rescuing the goddess of youth, Idun?"
Loki's sly smile widened. "Correct. I'm here to offer some advice."
Balder's eyes narrowed, and Slude, standing in the corner, visibly stiffened. It was no secret that Loki's actions were often shrouded in ambiguity.
"After all," Loki continued, his tone casual yet calculated, "if you fail this test, it will inevitably fall to me to clean up the mess. And Fenrir seems rather fond of you, so I'd hate for anything to happen."
Kevin's brow furrowed slightly. Loki's mention of Fenrir was unexpected, and Kevin couldn't help but glance at the trickster god, unsure if his words carried a hidden barb or genuine concern.
"You've caught my interest, Lord Loki," Kevin said, carefully masking his thoughts. "Do you know why the mountain giant Shaki took the goddess of youth, Idun?"
Before Loki could respond, Balder chimed in, "Isn't it because he seeks eternal youth and life?"
"Not quite," Loki replied, shaking his head. His emerald-green eyes gleamed with mischief as he explained, "Shaki has no real interest in the golden apples' effects on himself. His lifespan as a mountain giant is already vast.
"However," Loki added, pausing for dramatic effect, "Shaki has a daughter named Skadi. And he believes Skadi, his precious child, deserves the same eternal power as the gods."
"Skadi?" Balder repeated, startled by the revelation.
Kevin and Slude exchanged glances, curiosity evident on their faces.
"Yes," Loki confirmed, leaning forward as if sharing a secret. "Skadi is no ordinary mountain giant. She wields powers that rival those of the gods."
Balder stood abruptly, her golden hair catching the light. "Are you saying that a giant has birthed a being with god-like powers?!"
Loki nodded, his expression one of amusement. "Your father, Odin, is aware of this, of course. He simply didn't think it worth mentioning until now."
Balder clenched her fists but said nothing.
Kevin's thoughts raced. If Skadi possessed god-like powers, rescuing Idun would undoubtedly prove more complicated than he had anticipated.
Loki turned his gaze back to Kevin, his smile growing wider. "If you want to save Idun, I'd suggest focusing on Skadi. She is the key to entering Shaki's stronghold."
Kevin caught the implication immediately. Loki wasn't just here to provide guidance—he was pointing Kevin toward a specific path, one that likely served Loki's own purposes.
Still, Kevin stood and bowed slightly. "Thank you, Lord Loki, for your insight."
Loki wasn't done. He tapped his fingers on the table, drawing everyone's attention. "Skadi often leaves the stronghold to hunt. You can use this to your advantage."
"Follow her?" Slude asked.
"Precisely," Loki replied. "If you can gain her trust—or at least her curiosity—she might bring you back to the stronghold herself. But you'll need a certain… treasure to make this plan work."
"What kind of treasure?" Balder's voice carried an edge of suspicion.
Loki's smirk deepened. "The Goshawk Feather."
At this, Balder's expression turned stormy. "Freya?!"
Loki didn't deny it. "Indeed. Freya has the Goshawk Feather, a relic capable of transforming the wearer into a goshawk invisible to ordinary sight. With it, Kevin could approach Skadi undetected."
Balder looked visibly distressed, and Kevin raised an eyebrow in confusion.
Slude whispered to Kevin, "Freya, the goddess of love and beauty, has a… strong interest in warriors. She's been trying to meet you since you arrived."
"She's also rather possessive," Balder added sharply.
Kevin blinked, processing this new information. He had heard of Freya's beauty and charm, but now it seemed his journey might involve more than he'd bargained for.
Loki stood, brushing imaginary dust off his sleeves. "I've done what I came to do. The rest is up to you, Kevin. Good luck."
Before leaving, Loki cast a spell to adjust the contract between Kevin and Slude, extending the range of their bond for one week to allow greater freedom during the mission.
Kevin watched Loki leave, his sharp mind turning over everything the trickster god had said.
As Loki exited, Kevin chased after him. "Lord Loki, wait!"
Loki paused, turning with a raised eyebrow. "Yes?"
"Earlier, Lady Frigga mentioned something about Hodr's blindness being a price she pays as the God of Darkness. But she didn't finish her sentence. Do you know what she meant?"
Loki studied Kevin for a long moment, a strange smile curling his lips. "Oh, I know."
Kevin's heart skipped a beat. "Then tell me, please!"
Loki chuckled softly. "The condition for Hodr to regain her sight is simple."
Kevin leaned closer, hanging on every word.
"She'll see the light again if the entire Aesir race is destroyed."
Kevin froze, disbelief washing over him. Loki's words were calm, but their meaning was anything but.
"As long as the Aesir exists," Loki continued, his tone deceptively light, "Hodr will forever remain the God of Darkness."
With that, Loki vanished, leaving Kevin standing alone in the corridor, his mind reeling.
