Chapter 13: The Superior Female Lead Pampers Her Husband Without Limit 13
"It must be Xavia who came back."
Xavia's mother recognized the sound of footsteps and was sure it was her daughter. That child often got anxious and would rush home in a hurry when she was excited.
As soon as Xavia entered the yard, she smelled the delicious scent of scrambled eggs. She guessed her younger brother was in the kitchen cooking with their father, so she went straight there.
Her brother was supposed to come back the day before yesterday, but she waited all day and never saw him.
She knew he had married and gone to live with his wife for good luck, and maybe when he was supposed to return after three days, his wife Jewel wasn't feeling well, or the Jewel family was busy, so he couldn't make it.
So today, when she heard her brother was finally coming home with his wife, she immediately dropped the hoe in He-shi's hand and ran all the way home from the fields at the edge of the village without stopping.
"Xavi!" Xavia called out loudly.
"Sis!"
Xavi saw his sister—who had always loved and protected him since they were young—and was overjoyed.
"I missed you so much!" he said, hugging her arm, smiling brightly.
"I missed you too," Xavia said, gently patting his head, her eyes full of affection.
"Xavi, are you doing okay at the Jewel family's house? Has anyone bullied you?"
"Sis, everything's great at the Jewel house. No one bullies me."
Xavi smiled happily. "My wife Jewel and my father-in-law treat me really well."
As the two siblings talked with joy, Jewel stepped out and saw this heartwarming scene.
This was her first time seeing Xavi act so freely and cheerfully, laughing and talking without holding back—even if it wasn't with her.
He had never acted this way in front of her. It seemed he still hadn't fully relaxed around her yet, maybe still being careful or uncertain.
She wished Xavi could one day run into her arms without hesitation and speak his heart freely to her…
In this world, a man's charm and beauty could only be kept alive when he was loved and cherished—not just by his wife, but by the whole family.
Only when life was good, when he was protected and carefree, could a husband stay pure and sweet, bright and gentle, always warm and kind.
If a husband was treated harshly, made to suffer, or worn down by daily struggles, his spirit would dull, and he'd lose his faith in love. He would no longer feel deeply, and his heart would grow cold.
Only those treated kindly by time could remain gentle with time.
Only those cared for with love could return that love with joy.
She hoped Xavi, the only man she would ever marry, would always be protected under her care. She wanted him to keep that sparkle in his eyes, to be as free as a bird, never bound by the world's rules. She wanted him to shine bright like the stars every day, staying by her side with love, year after year.
When she first arrived in this world and accepted her identity, she had just wanted to treat her husband well—he was her responsibility after all. As his wife, she wanted to give him a happy life.
But now, seeing him laugh so freely in the sunlight, seeing him act sweet and playful with his sister, watching how much he trusted and depended on his family—she wished to preserve this joy in him forever. She wanted to protect his smile and become the one he felt closest to.
She also realized that when you truly love someone, no matter how much effort you give, it never feels tiring. Instead, it fills you with more happiness and more hope for the future.
But for now, it seemed her mission to pamper her husband had only just begun—there was still a long way to go.
If she wanted Xavi to always look at her first, she knew she still had a long way to go...
Jewel quietly stood aside, watching the joyful scene between the siblings Xavi and Xavia. She was deep in thought and didn't realize that Xavi had already noticed her. When he saw her standing there with a frown, not saying a word, he started to feel nervous.
What's wrong with my wife?
Did she think he had acted improperly?
He knew he should always be mindful of his behavior—especially since he was now married. As a husband, he had to follow the rules of a proper man. Even though Xavia was his older sister, he couldn't be too close to her or forget his manners. But he just missed her too much and didn't notice that Jewel had come out.
"Wife?" Xavi looked at Jewel and carefully called out to her.
"Yes, Xavi."
Jewel suddenly realized he was paying attention to her mood and was worried. She didn't want him to misunderstand her thoughtful expression, so she smiled gently and replied in a soft voice.
Xavia also turned to look at Jewel. She had once heard rumors that Jewel was lazy and liked to gamble all day.
But now, looking closely at the woman her little brother said was very good to him, Xavia started to doubt those rumors. This girl actually looked decent and seemed full of energy.
"Sis, I'm Jewel, Xavi's wife," Jewel said politely.
She always followed the way her husband introduced people.
"I'm Xavia, Xavi's big sister," Xavia replied, then turned to her brother.
"Xavi, go find Dad. I want to talk to Jewel for a bit."
"Don't be mean to her…" Xavi said quickly.
He was afraid his sister might say something that would upset Jewel, and he didn't want her to feel unhappy.
"Me? Be mean?"
Xavia was speechless. Her little brother was actually taking someone else's side now. That stung a little.
"I'm just going to talk to her, and you're already protecting her!" she said, shaking her head. Still, she thought maybe this Jewel really did treat her brother well—otherwise, why would Xavi speak up for her like this?
In the kitchen, Xavi felt distracted.
After agreeing to the marriage, Xavia had looked into Jewel's past. One of the things she heard was that Jewel liked to gamble. But just yesterday, they had sold a ginseng root at a clinic in town and suddenly had a good amount of money. The debt problem was no longer serious.
Besides, Jewel had said she wanted to live a good life with him. Even without that sudden money, he was willing to help her repay the debts. So now, he didn't want to judge her for her past mistakes. As long as she lived properly from now on, he would feel at ease.
"Xavi, add some more firewood. The fire's almost out."
In the kitchen, Zhang-shi noticed her son was lost in thought and didn't know what to say. She felt both happy and worried.
It seemed her youngest son had already fallen for his wife...
Meanwhile, Xavia had taken Jewel to a quiet spot under a crooked old tree near the house, a place perfect for a serious talk.
Xavia sat down casually on a big stone and asked straight out, "Jewel, I heard you used to gamble?"
Jewel stood nearby and calmly faced the question from her sister-in-law.
"Yes, I did in the past. But I won't ever do it again."
