The Superior Female Lead Pampers Her Husband Without Limit

Chapter 12: The Superior Female Lead Pampers Her Husband Without Limit 12

Xavi heard Jewel call his father "Papa" and saw how she thoughtfully brought food and supplies to help his mother recover. His heart filled once again with gratitude and warmth.

In the inner room, Xavi's mother was already sitting up in bed, looking weak but alert, her eyes fixed on the doorway with hope.

The curtain lifted, and the two walked in.

"Mama, I'm back," Xavi said gently.

He looked at his mother lying in bed, her face pale and tired, and he couldn't help but worry.

"Mama, are you feeling better?"

"I'm fine, Xavi. Don't worry about me," his mother said with a faint smile.

She felt that since her son was now married, he should focus on his new life and not be held back by her illness. Whether she got better or not, she didn't want to burden her children.

"Hello, Mama. I'm Jewel," Jewel greeted respectfully.

"You've had a long journey, daughter-in-law," Xavi's mother said kindly.

She looked Jewel up and down. The girl seemed healthy, with a gentle and calm face. Xavi's clothes were neat and clean, and from the looks of it, they were living well together.

"It wasn't hard at all. I'll come visit with Xavi often," Jewel said softly.

She could tell that Mama didn't want to worry her son and was pretending she was okay. But Jewel could see clearly that her mother-in-law needed care. She also understood how much both parents cared for Xavi.

"Thank you, daughter-in-law," Mama said.

As women, she only needed one look and a few words to know that Jewel was smart and capable.

Zhang looked at Xavi and could tell he wasn't pretending. He believed most of what his son said.

"You brought back so many good things. Was your father-in-law upset when you left?" he asked carefully.

Zhang worried that his son might be mistreated in his wife's home. Even the best husband could struggle if the father-in-law kept speaking badly about him in front of the wife. Over time, the wife might grow distant too.

"No, Papa. My father-in-law is kind to me. He's not a difficult person," Xavi answered quickly, not wanting his papa to misunderstand his in-laws.

"Jewel also treats us all fairly and handles the relationship between me and her father very well."

"That's good. If your wife truly cares about you, then you must work hard. Try to have a child soon. You know, in a wife's house, a husband with a child will always have a more stable position."

Zhang was speaking from experience. Back then, his wife originally wanted to marry her childhood friend He Shi as her main husband, but her parents didn't approve. Instead, they arranged for Zhang to marry her as the official spouse, and He Shi became a concubine.

When Zhang first married, his wife didn't care much for him. If he hadn't given birth to their two children, Mingfeng and Xavi, while He Shi remained childless, he would have never had any standing in the family. His wife's attitude only changed because of the children.

Now, even though He Shi was still favored, she didn't dare disrespect him as the official husband.

Xavi blushed when he heard his papa talk about having kids. He hadn't thought that far yet.

"You have to understand—women can fall out of love. If she loves you now, you must hold on to her heart tightly," Zhang said in a low voice, worried that his son was too naïve to understand relationships.

"Papa, she wouldn't…" Xavi didn't want to believe that Jewel would change. He couldn't imagine her treating someone else the same way she treated him. Just thinking about it made his chest ache so badly it was hard to breathe.

"You must listen to me!" Zhang tugged at his son's arm and whispered again.

"I know, Papa," Xavi said softly.

Only when his son agreed did Zhang finally feel at ease.

He knew marriage wasn't just about love. Life was full of small things—food, chores, everyday burdens. Right now, his son was still full of hope, just like he once was. And while Zhang hoped the young couple would stay happy forever, if they didn't, he wanted his son to be prepared. If Xavi had a child to rely on, it could protect him from heartache and misfortune.

Xavi had no idea his papa had already thought through his whole married life. While he added more firewood to the stove, he asked about his mother.

"Papa, how's Mama doing?"

"She's been checked by the doctor. Your sister is strong and can take care of the family. You just need to live peacefully with Jewel. If you're doing well, I'll sleep soundly every night."

Zhang didn't want Xavi to worry too much about the South family. If the Xie family thought he still missed home, they might not like it. After all, once a man marries, he belongs to his wife's family. If he isn't loyal to that home, things can become difficult.

In the kitchen, father and son chatted warmly, catching up on recent events.

Meanwhile, in the main room, Jewel was speaking gently with her mother-in-law. After a bit of observation, she realized the older woman's illness seemed familiar. It reminded her of the time she had pneumonia in the modern world.

That winter, she'd been overworked and neglected her health. What started as a cold turned into pneumonia, and she had to go through many IV treatments before getting better.

But here, if her mother-in-law really had something like pneumonia, it would be hard to treat. It would take money, good nutrition, a skilled doctor, and strong medicine.

As Jewel was deep in thought, she suddenly heard hurried footsteps outside.
