Chapter 22: The Superior Female Lead Pampers Her Husband Without Limit 22
Hearing his wife say such things in a casual tone, Xavi couldn't hold back the pain in his heart. He felt so miserable that he began to cry.
The small needle had pricked his fingertip, and the wound ached faintly. He clenched his fingers, which only made it hurt more. But even that pain was nothing compared to the ache in his chest.
Tears, like strings of pearls, rolled down Xavi's increasingly pale cheeks…
Yes, many years had passed, and he no longer looked like he did when he was young.
…
Finally, he woke up from the dream!
…
"Xavi! What's wrong?"
Jewel was sleeping when she suddenly felt her heart tighten with discomfort. She tossed and turned uneasily, then heard the soft sound of crying beside her. She opened her eyes in a hurry!
The moment she opened her eyes, she saw her husband's eyes tightly shut, his fists clenched, his face streaked with tears as he cried in pain.
"Honey… wake up…"
"Xavi?"
Seeing him like this scared Jewel. Did he have a nightmare?
But what could he have dreamed about that made him cry like this?
Could it be that Xavi had a past he couldn't bear to look back on?
She leaned in close, pulling the crying man into her arms and holding him tightly.
"Don't be afraid, Xavi… I'm here…"
Looking at him unable to stop crying broke Jewel's heart.
She kissed his soft, pale cheeks over and over, gently wiping away the clear teardrops falling from his eyes. They tasted salty, bitter, and full of sorrow and despair.
She had to know why he was so upset.
If anyone dared to bully her Xavi, she would never forgive them!
Maybe it was because of Jewel's soft voice and warm embrace, but the little one in her arms slowly calmed down…
"Wife…?"
Xavi had just dreamed that his wife no longer loved him. In the dream, she brought another man home to be her husband. Over the years, her love for him faded…
And all he could do was cry helplessly, heartbroken, becoming just a neglected husband living quietly by her side.
He didn't know what he could do to make her love him again, to make her treat him like she did at the beginning.
He just didn't know!
"Wife~"
He hugged Jewel tightly, as if letting go would mean losing her forever.
"I'm here."
Jewel stroked his face, gently running her fingers through his soft hair. "Don't be afraid, Xavi. I'm here. I'll always be here."
With Jewel's patient comfort and gentle words, Xavi finally began to come out of the sadness from his dream.
Dreams usually fade quickly after waking, and he forgot most of it. But one image stayed with him—
In the dream, his wife was holding another man's arm. They looked so close. To him, it was a painful and harsh sight. And yet, he had to accept this new person and share his wife's love…
Jewel saw his dazed expression and didn't want him stuck in that awful dream any longer. Though she didn't know exactly what he dreamed, she was sure it wasn't anything good.
"Xavi."
Jewel softly called his name, pulling him back into her arms, gently patting his back again and again.
Xavi's big eyes shimmered with tears, the corners tinged red. He looked up at Jewel, but the dream's memory made him want to cry again.
Why did he want to cry just from looking at her?
Did she do something wrong?
Had she made him unhappy?
She softly coaxed him, "Xavi, did you have a nightmare? Why are you crying? Did something sad happen in your dream?"
Xavi nodded, sniffled back his tears, and pouted. He snuggled deeper into her embrace.
"Can you tell me what you dreamed?"
Jewel gently rubbed his back. "I want to know what made you so sad."
Xavi hesitated. According to the customs of this world, even if one day his wife really wanted to take another husband like in the dream, as her official husband, he would still be expected to welcome the new man without jealousy. He should be a virtuous and dignified husband who followed all the rules.
He didn't want her to have anyone else, but if he said it out loud, would she think he was being possessive or petty?
Would she be mad?
But honestly, what man didn't want his wife's full attention?
Xavi was no different.
He'd seen his father suffer in silence for years, always putting on a brave face. He remembered clearly how his father cried while holding him and his sister late at night. Xavi didn't want to live like that—giving his whole heart and never getting it back.
Seeing his hesitant look and the way he kept glancing at her, Jewel had a strong feeling it had something to do with her.
"Tell me the truth, okay? I'll listen carefully to whatever you say," she encouraged, wanting to give him the courage to speak freely.
"Really? You won't be mad?"
Xavi really wanted to ask her—would she ever take another husband? If one day she gave the love she gave him to someone else, he knew it would break him.
"No, I won't be mad."
Jewel understood how sweet and kind her husband was. She didn't believe he could say anything too upsetting.
"Wife~"
"Yes?"
"I dreamed…"
"What did you dream?"
"I dreamed you didn't love me anymore…"
"Nonsense!"
Jewel was shocked to hear that. What did he mean she didn't love him?
She loved him so much it hurt!
Seeing how anxious she got, Xavi didn't dare say more.
Jewel noticed how he looked like he had more to say but didn't know how to say it. Did she do something even worse in his dream?
"Was there something else?" she asked gently, trying to stay calm.
"Yes. I also dreamed you brought a man home… to take as your other husband. He held your arm, and you told me to get along with him…"
Xavi's face was full of sorrow, his eyes glistening with tears. In the moonlight, they looked even brighter.
What!
That was too much!
That version of her in his dream was the worst!
No wonder her little one was so heartbroken.
Jewel took a deep breath, her emotions churning. Even her arms around him stiffened.
Her husband must've felt insecure… And she got it. In this world, having multiple husbands wasn't unusual. Even her mother-in-law Xana didn't only have one man.
But to Jewel, loyalty in marriage was sacred. Love was something between two people—there should never be a third.
Still, in this world where men had less power, it made sense that he had worries like that.
People dream about what's been weighing on their mind. Jewel now regretted not giving him the reassurance he needed earlier. If only she had—he wouldn't have cried like this in his sleep.
