Chapter 272: The Orb Of Phantasmal (3)
[Location: ???, ???]
RUMBLE...RUMBLE...RUMBLE...
"AHHH! SOMEONE SAVE ME!"
Darting through the dense forest is a small, frightened child, their heart pounding in their chest as they desperately try to outrun a monstrous creature.
With sharp, twisted horns protruding from its head and saliva dripping from its jagged teeth, the mutated monster snarls and growls with each step it takes closer to its prey.
The child's feet pound against the ground, kicking up dirt and leaves in their desperate attempt to escape the danger behind them.
Suddenly, the child's foot catches on an exposed root, sending them tumbling to the forest floor. They scramble to get up, but their knee throbs with pain. The monster's heavy footsteps grow louder, shaking the ground.
Tears stream down the child's face as they crawl behind a large oak tree, pressing their back against the rough bark. They clamp a hand over their mouth to muffle their panicked breathing.
GRRRR…
The creature's foul stench fills the air as it lumbers closer.
SWOOOSH
With one swift blow, the monstrous being cleaved the tree in two, exposing the child who had been hiding behind it.
The child let out a blood-curdling scream as the monster's glowing red eyes locked onto them.
In a desperate attempt to escape, they scrambled backwards on hands and knees, ignoring the searing pain shooting through their injured leg.
With a forced smile, she gazed upon the advancing monster and could only hope for a miracle.
Then, from the sky, 3 beams in the shape of energy shot downwards.
The beam on the left resembled a strike of white lightning. In the center, a thick black arrow crackled with dark flames as it shot downwards, while the beam on the right took on a rocket-like form, exploding into bright red flames at its tip.
BAM!
The creature in front of the girl was obliterated, leaving behind no trace except for a cloud of smoke swirling upwards from its impact.
"God damn it… that fall was scary."
"That bastard, I can't believe it."
"Where am I?!"
Through the smoke, the girl heard several voices murmuring. As it dissipated, she could see three males: two were on the ground, one lying flat and the other sitting up, while the person in the middle was brushing off their clothes.
The girl stared in awe at the three figures emerging from the smoke.
Her heart still racing, she struggled to comprehend what had just happened.
The monster that had been seconds away from devouring her had vanished, replaced by these mysterious newcomers.
The person in the center had blue eyes and black hair and was male. Standing to his left was an individual with blonde hair and red eyes, while on his right was someone with brown hair and green eyes.
"Thank you for saving me…"
She was overwhelmed with relief upon realizing she had been saved. She wanted to express her gratitude and feelings, but she paused when the three individuals exchanged puzzled glances.
"Um...hello?"
The trio turned their attention back to her, but the person in the middle seemed more relaxed than the others.
The blue-eyed man in the center stepped forward, his brow furrowed in confusion.
"Saving you? I'm afraid there's been some misunderstanding. We didn't..."
"Shh!" The blonde man cut him off abruptly, his red eyes darting around suspiciously.
"We don't know where we are or what's going on. Best not to say too much."
The brown-haired man nodded in agreement, his green eyes fixed on the girl. "Are you alright? What happened here?"
The child hesitated, her relief giving way to uncertainty. These strangers didn't seem to know about the monster or their own dramatic entrance. Had she imagined it all?
"There was... a monster," she began hesitantly. "It was chasing me, and then you appeared and..."
Her voice trailed off as she noticed the men exchanging doubtful looks.
"Oh, that must have been what happened... that small dot of vile energy needed to be eliminated, anyway."
Stay tuned to My Virtual Library Empire
The person with brown hair furrowed their brow.
"I sensed it too..." the person with blonde hair chimed in.
"We all did," the person with black hair in the middle added.
"So doesn't that make you guys heroes?"
"Huhhh? Heroes? Kid... we are not heroes." The person with brown hair spoke disdainfully, clearly disgusted by the word 'hero.'
"Ah...personally, I think he's more of a hero than any of us." The blonde-haired individual pointed at the person in the middle.
The girl asked curiously, "So who slayed the beast?"
"I did,"
All three men proudly declared.
"Huh?"
Confused glances were exchanged between the men, and the girl sensed a heated argument brewing.
Nervously, she prepared herself for the inevitable showdown of egos.
"What do you mean, you did?"
The blonde man snarled, his red eyes flashing dangerously.
"It was clearly my lightning strike that took down that monster!"
"Lightning strike?" the brown-haired man scoffed.
"Don't be ridiculous. My explosive flames incinerated that beast before your pathetic spark even touched the ground."
The black-haired man in the center remained calm, but his blue eyes hardened as he spoke.
"You guys should calm down. It doesn't matter who killed what, all we know is that we're in a safe place."
The black-haired man in the center stopped the two from colliding heads with each other.
The girl watched wide-eyed as tension spark between the three men. Despite the black-haired man's attempt to diffuse the situation, the other two seemed ready to come to blows.
Suddenly, a loud crack echoed through the forest, causing all four of them to freeze. The ground beneath their feet began to tremble, and the trees swayed ominously.
"What's happening?" the girl cried out, scrambling to her feet despite her injured knee.
The black-haired man's expression turned grave.
"I think we have bigger problems than those who killed what."
As if on cue, the earth split open mere feet away from where they stood.
Out of the abyss emerged multiple swarms of smaller creatures resembling the beast that had attempted to devour the girl.
