Chapter 274: Orb Of Phantasmal (5)
"Christian your so funny man!"
Anouz laughed heartily at Christian's comment, slapping him on the back. "You're full of surprises, aren't you? First that impressive magic, and now you're cracking jokes!"
Christian chuckled nervously, realizing he may have said too much. He glanced at me, and I gave him a subtle shake of my head.
"Ah, well, you know... stress brings out strange things in people," Christian said, trying to backpedal.
I decided to change the subject before Christian could dig himself into a deeper hole.
"So, little one," I called out to the girl leading us, "how much further to your village?"
The girl, who had been silent since we started our journey, turned back to look at us. Her eyes were wide with a mixture of awe and lingering fear.
"It's not far now. Just over that hill," she said, pointing to a rise in the distance.
As we crested the hill, a small settlement came into view. It was a humble village, with simple wooden houses and thatched roofs. Smoke rose from chimneys, and we could see people moving about their daily lives.
"Welcome to Millbrook," the girl said, a hint of pride in her voice.
As we approached the village, I noticed the villagers stopping to stare at us. Their expressions were a mix of curiosity and wariness.
It was clear that strangers were not a common sight here.
An elderly man, leaning on a gnarled wooden staff, stepped forward to meet us. His weathered face crinkled into a smile as he saw the girl.
"Lily! We were so worried about you," he said, embracing her. Then he turned his attention to us, his eyes narrowing slightly.
"And who might these strangers be?"
Lily, the girl we had rescued, beamed up at the old man. "Grandpa, these men saved me from a monster in the forest! They're heroes!"
I winced internally at the word 'heroes'.

It wasn't a title I was comfortable with, especially given the circumstances that brought us here.
The old man's expression softened.
"Is that so? Well then, we owe you our gratitude. I am Elder Rowan, and on behalf of Millbrook, I welcome you."
Anouz stepped forward, bowing slightly.
"Thank you for your kind welcome, Elder Rowan. I am Anouz, and these are my companions, Rel and Christian. We're... a bit lost, to be honest. The world I knew inside of here seemed to have changed. Perhaps you could tell us more about where we are?"
Elder Rowan's eyes widened slightly at Anouz's question. He stroked his long white beard thoughtfully before responding.
"You truly don't know where you are?" he asked, his voice tinged with surprise. "This is the land of the rising sun. But if you're here and don't know that..."
He trailed off, his brow furrowing with concern.
I stepped forward, sensing an opportunity to gather more information. "Elder Rowan, we apologize for our confusion. We found ourselves here quite suddenly and are trying to understand our situation. Could you tell us more about this world?"
The elder nodded slowly, his eyes scanning our faces.
"Of course. Come, let us speak in my home where we can be more comfortable. There is much to discuss."
As we followed Elder Rowan through the village, I couldn't help but notice the difference between this simple settlement and the modern world we had left behind.
The villagers watched us curiously as we passed, some whispering among themselves.
Inside the elder's modest home, we settled around a wooden table.
Lily busied herself preparing tea while Elder Rowan began his explanation.
"The world of Phantom mania has existed for countless generations. It is a place of both wonder and danger. The land is filled with magical creatures and mysterious phenomena, but it is also plagued by monsters that threaten our very existence."
"And these monsters, they're like the one we encountered in the forest?"
Elder Rowan nodded gravely.
"Yes, though that was likely a lesser beast. There are far more dangerous creatures lurking in the depths of our world."
"What about the people here?" Anouz asked. "Are you all native to this world?"
The elder's eyes clouded with a mix of sadness and nostalgia.
"Most of us are descendants. But every so often, new individuals appear, much like yourselves. We call them the Awakened."
"The Awakened?"
I asked, leaning forward with interest.
This was new information, something I hadn't included in my original story.
"Yes, the Awakened. They appear suddenly in our world, often possessing strange abilities or knowledge. Some say they come from another realm entirely."
"And what happens to these awakened?"
The elder's expression grew somber.
"Their fates vary. Some integrate into our society, using their unique skills to help our communities. Others... Others are drawn to ruling all the lands..."
"Ruling all the lands?"
I already knew he was talking about the dialogue he'd mentioned to a main character, so I got all the info out of him for Christian and Anouz.
"Yes. For generations, our lands have been under the control of powerful groups, each ruling their own territory. But the most dangerous among them is an unknown group that controls the central city."
"Tell us more about these ruling groups, Elder. Who are they? How did they come to power?"
Anouz leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with curiosity.
It seems Anouz must've noticed that this problem is related to Han's organization.
The elder sighed, his weathered hands wrapping around his mug of tea.
"There are four main factions that control most of the surrounding lands. The Iron Fist in the north, known for their military might. The Whispering Shadows in the east, masters of espionage and deception. The Golden Scales in the south, who control most of the trade routes. And the Crimson Flame in the west, a group of powerful mages."
"And the central city?"
"The central city is a mystery to most of us. It's ruled by a group so secretive and powerful that even the four factions dare not challenge them directly. Some say they're Awakened who have been here for centuries, amassing unimaginable power."
