Chapter 35: Ch 35 : Pack up the equipment
We all rushed to the warehouse to help gather supplies, during which we discussed the specifics of our future plans.
There are seven of us in total, and it's really cramped in Shen Feng's car.
If we wanted to bring enough food and survival gear, it was almost impossible.
After some discussion, we finally decided to leave Shen Xue, Zheng Rongrong, and Yin Shangtang in the relatively safe warehouse to continue gathering supplies.
I, along with Shen Feng, Yangyang, and Jun Di, who can drive, would go to the outdoor parking lot from last time to retrieve another vehicle.
I remembered that there was a key in the big van where the Wai Zui walker had been killed.
And that van was big enough to carry a lot of things.
Originally, Shen Feng and Yangyang were concerned about my injured arm and adamantly refused to let me go with them.
But I shut them down with a line about being experienced.
The truth is, if I let them go alone with Jun Di, who had never faced a walker directly, they would be just as uncertain.
All this time, the dangerous tasks were mostly led by Suo Tian, with them playing a supporting role.
But now that Suo Tian is not here, we can only rely on ourselves.
Yin Shangtang and Jun Di didn't have the opportunity, like the rest of us, to gradually get used to the life of fighting walkers under Suo Tian's protection.
Once we set off, they would have to face the danger head-on, without a safe place to hide.
They must learn self-defense and survival.
Shen Feng and I don't have the ability to protect so many people.
After confirming everything, the four of us prepared to leave.
When getting into the car, Shen Feng handed me the long dagger that I had used for a long time, which was in the trunk.
I almost jumped for joy as I took it.
"This is what Sister Sun gave back to us," Yangyang said.
"Mm." I waved the dagger around in my hand absentmindedly, responding casually.
Compared to the way she forced us to leave, I certainly didn't feel thankful for what Sister Sun did for us.
I continued to move the dagger in the air, feeling relieved that it was still the familiar weapon, which felt easier to handle!
As we headed towards the parking lot, we suddenly thought about the issue of fuel.
To avoid the awkward situation of running out of gas, we had to make a temporary detour to the farm products store we visited last time to grab a few empty barrels.
When we went to get the fuel last time, I remembered we didn't empty the gas tanks of all the cars in the parking lot.
While driving along the road, I noticed that the number of walkers had increased, whether on the main road or the small paths.
It seems that the walker horde is getting very close.
We have to hurry and leave here quickly!
If the news is correct, tonight or tomorrow during the day, a large number of walkers should be heading our way.
Thinking this, I started to feel anxious!
I couldn't help but urge Shen Feng to drive faster.
When we arrived at the parking lot, I was pleasantly surprised to find that there weren't as many walkers here as on the road; only two straggling ones were aimlessly moving around.
We parked the car by the side of the road, and Yangyang and Shen Feng quickly ran forward and took down those two foul-smelling walkers.
By the time I approached, Yangyang and Shen Feng were dragging the already decaying walker corpse out of the car.
While they were dealing with the car, I glanced at the walker lying on the ground.
Turn out it was Wai Zui that was bitten by Walker the last time.
It had also rotted severely.
There were some areas that seemed to have bite marks, looking unbearably disgusting.
Is this what people become after they die?
I crouched down, forcing myself to ignore the nausea, and stared at the walker's ruined face.
There was a wound on its head, likely the one Mei Jing left last time.
The eye sockets had already shriveled.
A large chunk of flesh was missing from its lips, exposing the white, bony teeth inside.
Its appearance didn't scare me, but it did fill me with a sense of fear and worry about the future.
Will I, someday, for some reason, close my eyes for the last time, and then have a body without a heartbeat, slowly rotting and stinking, swelling, dehydrating, shrinking, and eventually disappearing into a skeleton?
I shook my head and stood up from the ground.
Forget it, what's the point of thinking about those things now?
No matter how decayed and foul it gets, it'll be someone else's problem later, and I won't even know.
Just as I was about to walk over and check how Yangyang and Shen Feng were doing with the car inspection, I suddenly noticed Jun Di standing aside, his face pale as he stared at the two corpses on the ground.
I froze for a moment, then realized that Jun Di had almost never faced such disgusting scenes directly.
I had originally planned to tell him to go back to the car on the roadside, but then I thought to myself, he would have to get used to facing these things sooner or later, so I decided not to say anything and walked over to Shen Feng and the others, who were still inspecting the car.
However, Jun Di was really quite strong.
After we finished checking the car and confirmed it was fine, he even helped us with siphoning gas from the other cars.
I truly admired this about him.
When I saw the woman downstairs being devoured by the walkers, I was shaken for several days.
After filling up the gas tanks of both cars, we also filled the two large barrels.
Now, no more gas could be siphoned from any of the vehicles in the parking lot.
We loaded the barrels onto the van, and our mission was officially completed.
On the way back, Shen Feng drove the van with Yangyang, while Jun Di drove the original car with me.
I had planned to offer some simple words of comfort, but before I could speak, Jun Di said to me, "Sister Chen Yang, you don't need to worry about me. I just felt a bit disgusted for a moment. I'll get used to it after seeing it a couple of times."
I nodded at him in appreciation and decided not to say anything more.
When we returned to the mall, a few walkers had wandered up to the entrance.
Shen Feng, Yangyang, and I had no intention of avoiding them.
We all drew our knives and moved forward.
With the help of others, I felt much more confident when slashing the walkers.
Shen Feng and Yangyang had also learned the technique I used before: first kicking the walkers to the ground, and then smashing their skulls before they could get back up.
A few walkers were quickly brought down to the ground by the three of us.
Yangyang's movements were already very skilled, and that made me feel very relieved.
At least this proved that he had gained the ability to protect himself, no longer relying solely on others.
After meeting up with Shen Xue and the others in the mall, we didn't dare waste any more time and quickly moved the things we had packed to the cars.
We didn't load everything into one vehicle but instead split the load evenly between the two cars.
This was to ensure that if we encountered danger on the road and were forced to separate, we wouldn't face food shortages.
As we were leaving the warehouse, I noticed a box of compressed biscuits in the corner and decided to grab it as well.
These biscuits weren't tasty, but a small piece was enough to fill you up.
To balance the load, we decided that Shen Feng, with his better driving skills, would drive the van with Yin Shangtang and Shen Xue.
The sedan that had previously been driven by Shen Feng would now be driven by Jun Di, carrying me, Yangyang, and Zheng Rongrong.
Before we left, I made a special trip to the second-floor clothing section and grabbed some clothes for everyone.
Although these clothes were thin, they were better than nothing and could at least be worn.
In the future, we never know where we might end up, in some remote place where no one goes.
We can't wait until it gets hot and still be wrapped up in winter coats.
Finally, everything was packed and ready.
We gathered together, exchanging looks and words of encouragement for each other's future, before turning and getting into the cars.
The walker horde was coming from the north, and after some discussion, we decided to head towards the northwest.
We weren't sure where we'd end up, but at least for now, we could avoid the walker horde behind us.
As we left the county, we passed the road near my house.
I leaned against the car window, staring out at the familiar little building, which still stood quietly, untouched by the chaos of this disordered world.
I wondered if the cabbages on the roof had grown yet.
It had been a long time since they'd been watered.
I could only hope that it would rain here soon.
The car drove further away, and after turning a corner, I could no longer see the building.
I straightened up and looked ahead.
In my heart, I silently thought to myself, One day, I will definitely return!
On the road, there were always walkers attempting to block the car's path, stumbling and screeching as they approached the moving vehicle.
Every time we encountered this, Jun Di would quickly swerve the wheel to avoid them.
We hadn't gone far when I, who usually didn't get car sick, started feeling nauseous.
"Jun Di..." I rubbed my throbbing head and called out to him.
"Mm... What's wrong, Sister Chen Yang?" His stiff tone showed just how tense he was right now.
"Do you understand what walkers are?"
"Huh?" He was taken aback, glancing at me quickly before answering, "I know, they're people who eat others."
"You're right, and you're not right," I shook my head at him, pointing at the walkers outside the car window and saying, "They eat people, but you can't call them humans anymore. No one can die and come back to life, and no one can have their internal organs hanging out and still walk normally. They are monsters, pure evil demons."
"Sister Chen Yang, what are you trying to say?"
"The worst thing when dealing with demons is hesitation and kindness. Their only goal is to eat you."
Jun Di stared ahead, thinking for a moment, before responding in a deep voice, "I understand now."
Ahead, there was another cluster of walkers in groups of three or five.
I turned to look at Jun Di.
He pressed his lips tightly together, his hands gripping the steering wheel so hard that the veins were popping out.
I didn't speak, just quietly observed him.
I thought he would avoid them, at least hesitate for a moment, but to my surprise, when we got close to the group of walkers, he suddenly slammed the accelerator, charging straight at them.
With several loud thuds, the walkers were sent flying by the impact.
Watching them crash to the ground, their blood and flesh splattering everywhere, I felt a surge of joy.
Jun Di was smarter, stronger, and braver than I had imagined.
Afterward, Jun Di obviously let out a breath of relief.
His body slumped against the backrest, and a thin layer of sweat appeared on his forehead.
"Jun Di." I gave him a thumbs-up. "Nice job."
Jun Di didn't respond verbally but gave me a forced smile and nodded.
I turned to look at Zheng Rongrong, who had just woken up, rubbing her sleepy eyes in confusion due to the noise of the crash.
It occurred to me that it was a good thing she had been sleeping just now.
If she had seen such a scene, it would probably have left a strong psychological shadow on her young mind.
