Chapter 40: Ch 40 : Encountering a small horde of walkers again
There were about thirty people in Suo Tian's group, and with a few of us added in, staying in one building felt a bit cramped.
Fortunately, some of them were assigned to stand guard outside, so we, the newcomers, were lucky enough not to be put on rotating shifts.
Zheng Rongrong had already slept for a while in the car.
When she woke up, she must have suddenly recalled the events from yesterday—her lips began to quiver, about to cry.
But then her eyes caught sight of Suo Tian walking by.
Her trembling lips immediately calmed, and after staring at Suo Tian's back for a couple of seconds, she suddenly sprang up, as if injected with adrenaline, and scurried off in the direction he had gone, tailing after him eagerly.
The rest of us were left standing there with dark expressions, glancing at one another, unsure of what to say.
We were all assigned rooms on the third floor.
Suo Tian and the bearded man also stayed on the third floor.
As I wandered around the room, I found the house's layout to be quite unreasonable.
The living room was too small, while the bedroom was overly large.
The sofa had actually been placed inside the bedroom.
Suo Tian was sitting on the sofa, still holding something and reading it intently.
He looked very focused, occasionally stopping to write or draw on it.
Rongrong was curled up beside him, gazing at whatever was in his hand with a blissful little smile.
I walked over and took a quick glance, noticing that it was a thick atlas — the kind that records road conditions in great detail, marking out both major and minor routes.
It looked like Suo Tian was drawing out a route to a particular location.
I glanced at Rongrong, who was eagerly looking at the atlas with Suo Tian, and walked over to knock lightly on her head.
"Do you even understand what you're looking at? You're acting like it's real."
Rongrong, who had been lost in a blissful daydream, was brought back to reality by my tap.
She covered her head and turned toward me angrily, just about to yell — but as soon as she saw it was me, she immediately shut her mouth again.
She obediently greeted me, "Auntie."
Suo Tian also looked up at me.
I pointed to the atlas in his hand and asked, "What's that for?"
"Just confirming the route ahead. We need to avoid densely populated areas as much as possible."
"We're… Oh, I mean, you guys are heading where exactly?" I forced a smile.
Suo Tian's sudden identity shift, along with this mysterious group of people, had made me instinctively keep my distance from him.
I couldn't help but speak a bit more cautiously now.
Suo Tian put down the atlas and looked at me.
"Heading back to headquarters."
"Headquarters?"
"Yeah."
What headquarters? Where is it? What do they do there? Who exactly are you?
God knows how badly I wanted to blurt out all those questions at once — but I knew that if Suo Tian wanted to talk about it, he would eventually do so on his own.
If he doesn't want to talk, asking is pointless.
Just like how he once calmly told me he was a police officer and even made up a seemingly implausible story — one that, despite how suspicious it sounded, didn't leave any real loopholes to question.
After exchanging a few more casual words with Suo Tian, I turned and left the bedroom.
I took the clothes out of my backpack, ready to clean my body that was practically covered in grime.
The shower in the bathroom still worked, but there was no hot water.
I originally thought of heating some in the kitchen, but seeing how bare it was — not even a single bowl in sight — I could only shake my head and sigh.
The wound on my arm needed to be treated.
It had been aching constantly since yesterday, and the pain was getting worse.
I probably tore it open again when I was tugging on Jun Di too hard.
As soon as I took off my coat, I saw the red bloodstain on my sweater.
I sucked in a breath and slowly rolled up my sleeve.
The bandage was completely soaked with blood.
No wonder I had been feeling so lightheaded — with that much blood loss, it was a miracle I hadn't passed out.
Staring at the bandage for a while, I couldn't help but think…
This is like losing multiple periods' worth of blood.
I carefully unwrapped the bandage layer by layer, and when the wound was finally exposed, I couldn't even bear to look at it.
If it weren't for the situation I was in, with this much pain, I'd definitely be crying by now!
Just as I picked up the showerhead, ready to rinse my wound, it suddenly hit me — we'd been avoiding drinking this water just to be safe, and now I was about to use it on an open wound?
What if something happened? Wouldn't that be the dumbest way to die?
I reluctantly put the showerhead back, silently relieved that I remembered in time.
With no better option, I changed out of my dirty clothes.
There was still a bit of bandage left in the medical kit Shu Guang gave me.
I used some iodine to clean the wound as best as I could, wrapped a few layers of bandage around it, then pulled out the roll of toilet paper I had taken earlier and wound a thick layer over the injury.
After getting dressed and making sure everything was in place, I used the dirty clothes to wrap up the blood-soaked bandage and stuffed it all into my backpack.
I'll toss it somewhere along the road later.
It's not like anyone's still out here fining people for littering.
When I stepped out of the bathroom, I realized I had been in there for quite a while.
Shen Feng, Suo Tian, and the others had already laid out blankets and were resting in the living room.
Shen Xue, Xu Shu, and Rongrong were sleeping in the bedroom.
I tiptoed through the living room and could already hear Xu Shu's steady breathing coming from inside.
I glanced at her sleeping form — she must be exhausted.
After spending the whole night with her, I noticed that although Xu Shu looked a bit unapproachable on the surface, she was actually warm-hearted and incredibly resilient.
Take last night, for instance — even after driving all night with exhaustion written all over her face and barely holding on, she still grit her teeth and pushed through without a single complaint.
Shen Xue was lying on the other side, hugging Rongrong, and the two sisters were whispering to each other.
I couldn't help but laugh a little.
Shen Xue was so grown up, yet she still managed to find common ground with Rongrong.
I placed my backpack to the side and, not intending to squeeze in with them, decided to lie down on the sofa with my clothes on.
I had taken a nap earlier in the night and had slept for a while, so I wasn't really tired now.
With the pain from my arm still lingering, I had no hope of falling asleep.
My head still felt a little foggy, and there was a sensation I couldn't quite explain — my limbs felt weak.
Lying on the sofa, with my body fully relaxed, that feeling of not being able to muster any strength only intensified.
I furrowed my brows tightly, a bad feeling rising in my chest.
I hadn't eaten much these past few days, and with all the blood I had lost and the lack of proper rest, I knew something was bound to go wrong.
Even someone with a body of iron wouldn't be able to hold up like this for long without developing some kind of issue.
Some time passed, and just as I was pondering what I could do to ease my body, two sudden gunshots rang out from outside the window.
Startled, I quickly sat up from the sofa.
The noise downstairs suddenly grew chaotic, followed by a few frantic shouts and conversations: "Quick, go notify the boss, the rest of you form up in battle formation! Hurry! Everyone get your own cover!"
It was the voice of the middle-aged man.
Shen Xue and Rongrong also got up from their beds, looking terrified and confused as they stared at the window.
At the same time, a few more gunshots rang out from outside.
I quickly went over to wake up the still-sleeping Xu Shu.
At that moment, the door to the living room opened, followed by the sound of hurried footsteps going downstairs.
When I reached the living room, I didn't see Suo Tian or the big-bearded men; Shen Feng and Yangyang were sitting in their blankets, looking sleepy and confused.
Clearly, they still hadn't understood what was going on.
By now, the gunshots outside had become more frequent, mixed with the distant, eerie growls of walkers.
For a moment, I felt like I had returned to that bus from last night.
I quickly ran to the window and looked down.
The area near the building was already in turmoil.
A sizable group of walkers, scattered around, was slowly approaching our building.
The group of black-clad men had nearly all gathered downstairs.
In a seemingly chaotic but oddly organized manner, they were firing their guns furiously at the approaching walkers.
I quickly scanned the crowd for Suo Tian's figure, but before I could spot him, one of the black-clad men in the front suddenly let out a fierce roar.
I was startled and quickly looked toward the source of the sound.
I saw one of the black-clad men, holding a gun, surrounded by several walkers.
The man, unable to shoot due to the tight circle around him, was desperately swinging his rifle's stock at the walkers, trying to push them away.
I watched, heart racing, terrified that he would be knocked to the ground and, like Xiao Yin, would be torn apart by those damn creatures.
"Damn it! Where's the sniper? Where did he go? What kind of cover is this?! Hurry up and shoot! Are you saving bullets for yourself?!"
Below, I heard the gruff voice of the bearded man cursing loudly.
The black-clad man, with the help of those covering him, quickly broke free.
However... despite the distance, I could clearly see his arm, which was missing a chunk of flesh, trembling as blood dripped from the wound.
After breaking free, the black-clad man didn't pay attention to his wound but instead forced himself to raise his gun again and fired at the approaching walkers.
His aim was incredibly accurate.
While not every shot killed one, every few shots, a walker's head would be shattered.
I unconsciously bit my lip, my eyes fixed on him.
I too had a bite wound on my arm, clearly not as severe as his injury, but the pain was enough to make me want to cry.
Meanwhile, he stood firm, with that massive wound on his arm, holding his position without flinching.
I felt a pang of sadness.
Did he know that wound had already marked the countdown to his life?
The gunfire downstairs intensified.
Da-da-da… da-da-da… da-da-da…
The overwhelming sound of gunfire filled the air, and I couldn't help but admire the creators of firearms—this device was truly awe-inspiring.
Finally, I spotted Suo Tian among the crowd.
Like the others, he held his gun with both hands, continuously firing at the walkers.
I glanced at the scattered walkers, their numbers similar to those around the car yesterday, but more spread out.
This made it harder to shoot, unlike last night when they were more concentrated.
If the walkers were clustered together, with all the firepower Suo Tian and the others had, it would be easy to wipe them all out.
Now, however, the spread-out formation made their shots more challenging.
It was difficult to land a headshot.
The sight of the scattered walkers and the sounds of gunfire stirred something inside me, and I felt an uncontrollable urge rising.
I wanted to go down there and slay those walkers myself!
Smash their damn heads one by one!
I slapped the windowsill and immediately turned to run towards the living room door.
But I was stopped by a firm grip from Shen Feng and Yangyang, who had regained their senses.
