The Walking Dead : Rules of Survival

Chapter 52: Ch 52 : Sudden heavy snowfall

Originally, to save fuel, we hadn't dared to turn on the car's air conditioning the whole way.

But now that we had Suo Tian and the others with us, we no longer had to worry about fuel consumption, so we stopped being so hard on ourselves and turned the heater on inside the car.

When the car was driving on the pitch-dark road late at night, the convoy stopped in a relatively open area.

Along the way, Suo Tian had chosen routes that mostly avoided city areas, so our convoy had been winding along country roads.

I guess his thinking was that this would minimize encounters with large groups of walkers.

Even though it wasn't like the huge hordes the news had warned us about on TV, if a few thousand walkers suddenly blocked our way, even with our firepower, it would definitely be a tough fight.

Choosing to travel on these small roads at least meant we wouldn't encounter excessive numbers of walkers.

Of course… it also meant it was harder to find supplies.

I asked Yangyang to wake up Rongrong, who was sleeping soundly, put the coat back on her, then helped her off the car to go to the bathroom.

After the convoy usually stops, if nothing unexpected happens, they typically rest right there for about twenty to thirty minutes.

Rongrong reluctantly got off the car with me, her eyes half-closed.

Maybe because it was nighttime, I felt like the temperature was much colder than during the day.

Wrapping her coat tighter, I led Rongrong behind a tree a little further away.

Whenever the convoy stopped, the surrounding area would be quickly searched, so there was no need to worry about walkers.

While standing there waiting for Rongrong, I suddenly heard Shen Xue's excited shout not far away: "It's snowing!"

I was stunned and instinctively looked up, but the car lights didn't illuminate well here, and the tree canopy above blocked the view, so I couldn't see anything.

I helped Rongrong pull up her thick clothing and then took her back toward the car.

Just as we stepped out from under the trees, I immediately felt a few chilly flakes blown onto my face by the cold wind.

Walking up to the car, through the headlights' bright beams, I finally saw it — it really was snowing, and judging by how much, it was quite a heavy snowfall.

Rongrong held out her little hands, pretending to catch the flakes in front of her, then shivered as she hurried back toward the car: "Brother Yangyang, look! Snowflakes~~~ such beautiful snowflakes~~~"

Her deliberately exaggerated childlike tone made me laugh.

I stretched lazily, feeling like all the stiffness in my bones had finally loosened.

Not wanting to go back into the car just yet, I stood there and chatted briefly with Shen Xue, who had come out to stretch as well.

She was a bit worried about my wound.

I told her about going with Suo Tian to look for medicine.

Shen Xue was so happy she let out an excited shout: "Really?!"

I gestured for her to keep her voice down so others wouldn't overhear.

Shen Xue shrugged her shoulders, glanced around, and whispered, "See, I told you Suo Tian cares about you. He must trust you. It would have been better to tell him sooner, not wait until your wound got so bad."

I waved her off, saying, "It's not about trust. Suo Tian knows the wound is okay; otherwise, no matter how much he cared, he wouldn't have let me stay."

Shen Xue nodded in agreement, "That's true."

Maybe it's because I've known Shen Xue from the beginning, and we hid together relatively early on, so I naturally trust her more than others.

For example, when I went out with Suo Tian to look for medicine, I didn't tell Xu Shu, who I just met, but I wanted to tell Shen Xue.

However, regarding that couple, I still chose to keep it from Shen Xue — actually, I decided to keep it from everyone.

Though I've killed plenty of walkers, I've always instinctively respected the lives of the living.

But this time... for some unclear, indescribable reason, I personally killed a living person.

I've thought about it quietly inside—why did I have to open that door?

That old woman had lost her husband, her spiritual support, and was destined not to live long anyway.

But I insisted on opening that door, releasing walkers to tear her apart alive.

I tried to convince myself it was an act of mercy, letting her go early, or perhaps vengeance for the innocent people they had killed.

But no matter how I explain it, in the end, it never feels fully justified.

As for Suo Tian stabbing that man to death, I really don't want to think about him.

Because if I dig too deep into it, I'm afraid I'll start having doubts about him that I won't be able to control myself.

The expression on Suo Tian's face when he killed that man seemed way too natural, almost dismissive.

Even though those two deserved to die, he should have shown at least a hint of hesitation before ending a life with his own hands.

Before long, the snow started falling heavier and heavier.

There was no choice but for us to each return to our cars to warm up, and the convoy set off again.

Having gone so long without any heat, I finally dozed off drowsily in the car in the middle of the night.

The next day, just as dawn was breaking, the convoy stopped again.

I opened my eyes and looked outside, noticing the ground was covered with a layer of white snow, which was still falling—heavier than it had been during the night before.

Since I didn't need to use the bathroom and Rongrong was still sleeping, I just curled up in my seat watching the group of people dressed in black running around with guns in the snowy field outside.

Through the rearview mirror, I saw Suo Tian standing outside the car, surrounded by a circle of people, discussing something.

Before long, one of them ran behind Suo Tian's car and carried out a wooden box.

Then the whole group gathered around it.

Just as I was craning my neck, about to roll down the window and lean out to see what they were taking out, Suo Tian took a black, brick-like object from one of them and walked toward our car.

I quickly rolled down the window and called out to him as he approached, "What's that?"

Suo Tian slightly raised the object in his hand, and only then did I realize it was a walkie-talkie…

When he reached the front of the car, Suo Tian adjusted the walkie-talkie and handed it to me.

I took it and examined it closely.

Walkie-talkies don't rely on network signals; they can be used for short-distance communication where there's no phone signal.

Now that mobile signals are useless, the walkie-talkie was undoubtedly the perfect communication tool for us.

But why are we only getting these now?

Suo Tian seemed to guess what I was thinking.

"Before, only Car One and I had them. The other cars didn't need them."

"So why are you giving one to us now?"

Suo Tian glanced up at the heavy snowfall and then looked back down at me, saying, "I need to know the situation of every car at all times now."

The snow was falling hard, and soon Suo Tian's head was covered in a layer of white.

I tugged on his coat to signal him to bend down.

He hesitated for a moment, then bent down and leaned his ear toward me, as if expecting me to say something.

I smiled slightly and reached up to brush the snow off his head.

Suo Tian was a bit surprised but stayed bent over, waiting for me to clear the snow.

"Uh… Suo Tian?" Xu Shu, who was sitting in the driver's seat, suddenly spoke up.

Suo Tian reached out, gently took my hand off his head, and naturally held it in his own.

He glanced at Xu Shu, raised an eyebrow, and responded, "Hmm?"

Xu Shu glanced at our hands clasped together, awkwardly cleared her throat, then gave me a sideways look with a faint smile before composing herself and asking, "It's snowing so heavily—shouldn't we find a place to take shelter first? At this rate, in a few hours, the road will definitely be too slippery to drive on."

Suo Tian nodded, "There's a village not far ahead. We'll camp there."

He had probably already thought of this and was just informing the others.

Xu Shu nodded and straightened up in her seat.

I felt a little embarrassed and glanced in the rearview mirror, noticing Yangyang staring fixedly at me and Suo Tian.

I quickly pulled my hand back and said to Suo Tian, "You should get back in the car. It's snowing so hard outside; your clothes will get soaked."

Suo Tian was about to reply when suddenly a commotion from ahead caught his attention.

Without saying anything, he turned and ran forward.

I was a bit confused about what was going on.

The view ahead was blocked by several cars, so I turned to look at Xu Shu and saw that she was also staring at me with a puzzled expression.

The commotion up front grew louder, accompanied by the angry shouting of a bearded man:

"What the hell is going on?!"

"Boss, we have to retreat!"

"Retreat my ass! Get me on guard!"

"But there are too many of them!"

"Everyone, damn it, stay on guard! Stay on guard!" The bearded man kept yelling angrily.

Rongrong and Chen Pu were woken up by the noise, yawning groggily, the contrast between their sleepy sounds and the angry shouting outside made me feel uneasy and anxious inside.

Up ahead, Shen Feng and Jun Di also got out of their cars.

"Let's get out and check it out too, bring your weapon. Something definitely happened."

I quickly opened the car door and got out first.

Taking a couple of steps to the side, I finally got a clear look at the situation ahead.

But as soon as I saw it, a chill ran down my spine.

Ahead, on the vast white expanse, countless dense black dots were moving steadily toward us.

Looking at that massive, overwhelming horde, I was almost frozen in place.

How many hordes of walkers had we encountered recently?

Although they were far away, I could roughly tell that this wave was definitely as large as, if not larger than, the previous two we had faced.

I ran forward.

Suo Tian was standing among the group, discussing something with a middle-aged man nearby.

The bearded guy beside them was still shouting angrily at others without any sign of stopping.

I couldn't help but frown — this guy's temper was just way too explosive!

When I reached Suo Tian's side, I only caught the last decisive sentence he said:

"Everyone, switch to combat stance and stay alert. Snipers provide cover. Charge through!"

Immediately, the noisy crowd fell silent.

After the clicking sound of weapons being chambered, everyone quickly got back into their vehicles, their expressions turning serious and focused.

I noticed that the windows on the first few vehicles were all slightly rolled down, and through the narrow gaps, I could see black gun barrels and some serrated long knives sticking out.

I stood there somewhat stunned—they even had chainsaws.

Turning around to head back to the car, Suo Tian caught sight of me, furrowed his brows deeply, and walked over: "Get back in the car."

I glanced at the group of black dots gradually approaching in the distance and nodded at him.
