The Walking Dead : Rules of Survival

Chapter 53: Ch 53 : Break through the horde of walkers

At a time like this, the daggers in our hands wouldn't be of any help to them.

All we could do was get back to the car as quickly as possible and hope Xu Shu's driving skills were reliable enough to follow them and push through.

Suo Tian tugged me toward the car.

Along the way, Shen Feng seemed to have more or less figured out what was going on.

After the bearded guy up front loudly shouted for all vehicles to turn on their walkie talkie, he quickly returned to his own car.

When we reached the car, I opened the door, about to get in.

Suddenly, Suo Tian grabbed my hand from behind and shoved something into it.

The cold, heavy feel of the object made me instinctively want to turn and look at him the moment I realized what he had handed me—but Suo Tian firmly pushed me into the car before I could.

He returned to his own vehicle.

I discreetly tucked what he gave me into my waistband, and only after seeing him get into his car in the rearview mirror did I roll up the window.

"There's another horde of walkers ahead. There are more of them this time than the last two times. We'll have to break through. Everyone, hold on tight. Chen Pu, cover Rongrong's eyes. Yangyang, get your dagger ready—stay alert." I quickly turned and gave out the instructions.

Probably because they realized how serious the situation was, the three of them already had expressions showing they were mentally prepared.

Even Yiyi had no objections when Rongrong tucked it into the seatback pocket—so well-behaved it made me wonder for a second if it was dead.

"Why not go around?" Xu Shu asked as she gripped the steering wheel, slowly starting to move forward, following the car ahead.

Her expression looked a little tense.

It wasn't surprising...

Even if she wasn't worried about herself, there were still Rongrong and her younger brother in the car—two half-grown kids.

If something really happened, even if we managed to fight our way out, the two of them would most likely be done for.

"This is a straight road. We haven't turned once this whole way. Even if we avoid this group of walkers for now, unless we change routes later, we'll run into them eventually. They probably felt it wasn't worth taking a detour just for this horde, so they decided to push through."

Seeing that Xu Shu was still visibly nervous, I tried to reassure her.

"Don't worry. If Suo Tian and the others made this call, it means they're confident. Suo Tian isn't someone who acts without a plan."

"The horde is about a hundred meters ahead—should we speed up?" came a voice from the walkie-talkie after a burst of static.

"Go!" It was Suo Tian's voice.

"Relax, there are plenty of cars ahead blocking the way. Just stay close and we'll be fine," I gave Xu Shu one last word of reassurance, then placed my hand—through my clothes—on the gun Suo Tian had given me.

The walkie-talkie continued to transmit distance reports from Vehicle One, followed by Suo Tian's brief and decisive responses.

"80 meters."

"50 meters."

"30 meters."

We couldn't see exactly how far the walkers were, just followed the car in front as it picked up speed.

As the reported distance shrank, the veins on Xu Shu's hands gripping the steering wheel began to bulge, showing just how tense she was.

Then suddenly—bang, bang, bang!—the muffled sound of walkers being slammed by cars came from up ahead, followed by bursts of gunfire and the whirring of chainsaws revving to life.

Even without seeing it firsthand, the sound alone—mixed with the noise of tearing flesh—was enough to conjure a scene chilling to the bone.

There were probably too many walkers, blocking the path and slowing down the cars.

Before I realized it, a thin layer of sweat had formed on my forehead, and the hand resting near my waist was slick with nervous sweat.

Finally, after moving forward a bit more, we could clearly see the walker horde on both sides.

There were a lot—at least as many as the total we'd encountered the previous two times.

Walkers kept lunging at us head-on, slamming into the windshield.

After letting out a few snarls with their jaws wide open, they'd be thrown aside by the car, only for a second, then a third, to immediately lunge onto the glass again.

Instinctively, I leaned back slightly as I watched the swarm of walkers gathering outside the window, my heartbeat quickening.

The convoy ahead seemed to have run into some kind of trouble—their speed had slowed down even more.

"Vehicle One? Vehicle One? What the hell is going on? Why the fuck are you crawling like a damn snail?!" came the bearded guy's angry voice over the walkie-talkie.

There was no response for a while.

Then finally, someone replied, "This is Vehicle Two. Vehicle One is surrounded by walkers—it looks like they're about to be overrun!"

Right as that message ended, another voice came through—urgent and panicked: "Vehicle One requesting backup! Requesting backup!"

The response was rushed and chaotic, with the roar of chainsaws buzzing in the background, making everyone's hearts clench.

"Strike team, disembark. All of you." Suo Tian's voice came through the walkie-talkie—calm and flat, but it shocked me to the core.

I quickly looked through a gap where walkers hadn't blocked the view—there were so many out there.

If they charged out now, wouldn't it be suicide?!

Panicking, I grabbed the walkie-talkie, ready to yell for Suo Tian not to go—but then Yangyang grabbed my hand from behind.

I looked at him in surprise.

He shook his head at me and said, "Brother Suo Tian definitely knows what he's doing. Don't distract him."

While I was still stunned, the familiar rat-tat-tat of submachine gun fire rang out from outside.

At this moment, both sides of our vehicle were completely surrounded by over a dozen walkers.

While they couldn't stop the car from inching forward, they were enough to block our view entirely.

Just then, Shen Feng suddenly jumped out of the slowly moving vehicle ahead, gripping two long daggers in his hands, slashing into the surrounding walkers without hesitation.

The car ahead continued to move, which meant Jun Di must have taken over the driving.

Did Shen Feng already anticipate this situation?

Had he planned from the start to get out and assist?

I leaned forward nervously, my eyes locked on Shen Feng as he swiftly cut down the walkers.

Two of the black-clad gunmen from the rear moved quickly and caught up with our vehicle.

Upon seeing Shen Feng jump out with his daggers, one of them rushed over to him and said something I couldn't hear.

Shen Feng nodded, and then the three of them stood back-to-back, defending against walkers from different directions.

Our vehicle had slowed to a crawl—barely managing a single wheel rotation per minute.

We were practically at a standstill.

"Sniper! Sniper! Cover the sniper getting on the roof!" came the voice of the middle-aged man over the walkie-talkie.

Immediately after, the sound of gunfire outside intensified significantly.

Watching Shen Feng and the others continuously slashing and shooting up ahead, I gritted my teeth, yanked out my dagger, and turned to Xu Shu.

"I'm getting out. You keep driving! Watch the kids in the car!"

Xu Shu looked at me with a tense expression, then handed me her own dagger and gave me a nod to show she understood.

"Sis, I'm going with you," Yangyang said firmly.

I turned to glance at him.

After biting down hard on my lip, I gave a fierce nod.

Today, let the two of us siblings go into battle together!

Let me see if my dear brother can protect himself—and protect others.

After signaling for Yangyang to get ready, I took a deep breath and flung the car door open.

The moment the door knocked aside a walker outside, I dashed out quickly.

Once I was sure the coast was clear, I turned back and slashed down the two walkers clinging to the car door!

Then I slammed the front door shut, and immediately turned to stab down two more walkers clinging to the rear window!

Yangyang followed suit, flinging open the car door and jumping out.

The two of us quickly took down the walkers crowding near the car!

The growls and shrieks of walkers filled the air, oppressive and suffocating, but the sharp bursts of gunfire interspersed among the chaos gave me a sliver of courage.

Back-to-back with Yangyang, we moved slowly along the side of the vehicle, stabbing down any walker that got too close.

Once you get used to it, it starts to feel natural.

Normally, just a few walkers would take a fair bit of effort for one person to handle—but now, surrounded by so many of them, their combat ability suddenly felt much weaker.

I was slicing through them one after another, and it felt incredibly satisfying!

More and more people in black were rushing past our car to support the front line, and by now, aside from our two vehicles, nearly every other car had snipers positioned on their roofs.

Though knives had limited power, the good thing was that all of us were seasoned and skilled—nearly every strike hit its mark.

The gunfire continued in a steady, dense rhythm, and the constant roars of the walkers still felt overwhelming, like a tidal wave of noise!

As Yangyang and I struggled to fend off the walkers constantly lunging at us from all sides, I suddenly heard the sound of a car door opening and closing behind us.

I quickly turned my head to glance back—only to see Chen Pu getting out of the car with a knife in hand, slashing at a walker approaching from his side!

But whether it was because he was still young and not strong enough, or simply inexperienced at fighting walkers, he made a mistake—he got pinned against the car by the walker, and it was just about to bite down on him.

I instinctively wanted to shout in panic, but just at that critical moment, amid the chaotic rat-tat-tat of gunfire, I didn't catch which shot was the one that saved Chen Pu.

"Get back now! You're just a kid—this isn't the time for you to help!"

I shouted loudly without daring to look back as I slashed at the walker beside me.

"I can help!" Chen Pu's voice carried that stubborn determination unique to children.

But this situation was definitely not the time for him to prove his defiance.

I couldn't help but feel a surge of frustration—why are boys always so hard to manage?

Just like Yangyang back then!

And Xu Shu—how could she possibly let someone as young as Chen Pu get off the vehicle to face such a massive horde of walkers?

Up ahead, thanks to Shen Feng and the others covering them, the area around the lead vehicle was relatively clear—at least no walkers could get near it.

Of the two men in black we started with, one had already rushed to the front to assist.

But the one who stayed behind was working seamlessly with Shen Feng.

As they moved forward alongside the vehicle, a trail of fallen walkers marked their path.

Suddenly, the car door at the front flung open with a bang, and Shen Xue jumped down, dagger in hand, her face dead serious.

My head was practically spinning.

What is going on today?!

Why is everyone suddenly unafraid of walkers?

Why is everyone jumping in to join the chaos?
