Chapter 44: CHAPTER 44 – UNEXPECTED SITUATION, THE COWARD
*Note: Well, here's the chapter. I'm sorry I didn't upload anything yesterday, but I was feeling really down — so much so that I spent the whole day just watching videos and a few movies. Anyway, I won't bore you with the reasons behind it. What you should know is that I'm still feeling sad, but since I didn't want to leave you without chapters for three days, I pushed myself to bring you this one. I hope you enjoy it.
Have a good day and comment if you want :)
...
Rito is far too naïve; a few carefully chosen words were all it took to convince him I'm not the villain he imagined. "Competition," though? I almost feel sorry for him. If he weren't such a coward he might be a worthy rival, but his inherent timidity means he'll never pose a real threat to me. In the end, I'm bound to win.
Of course, I couldn't say that out loud. Instead, we shook hands and sat down to a pleasant dinner of spaghetti alla carbonara—simple, but delicious.
Most of the meal was spent chatting about mundane topics. Not every conversation has to be earth‑shattering; sometimes a bit of easygoing normality is nice.
When evening came it was time to head home.
"It was a lovely night—come by anytime" - Mikan said, seeing us to the door.
Rito had already excused himself, so only Mikan stayed to say goodbye.
"I'll lend you a hand whenever I can" - I replied with a nod.
"Me too!" - Lala chimed in brightly.
Mikan flushed.
"Ah—thank you, but I wasn't inviting you over just to put you to work. I had fun tonight, and it's nice having company" - said Mikan shyly.
"We know" - I said, smiling.
"But I've already decided—I'll help out whether you ask or not." - I said.
"And I'll go with you" - Lala added, just as determined.
"Th‑thank you…" - Mikan murmured, touched by our insistence.
"See you tomorrow" - I said, waving.
"See you!" - Lala echoed.
"Yes… see you tomorrow" - Mikan answered softly.
On the walk back...
"Did you enjoy yourself today?" - I asked.
"I had a great time!" - Lala said.
"Even though all we did was housework?" - I teased.
"Of course. Still, I feel bad for Mikan‑chan. She's only a child, yet she carries so many responsibilities—and Yuuki‑san doesn't even help her…" - said Lala.
"Lala‑sama used to spend her whole day lazing around" - Peke interjected.
"That's not true! I studied and took private lessons" - Lala protested.
"Lala‑sama, you hardly studied at all. Your tutors finished early because you always solved their questions in seconds. After three hours you had the rest of the day free" - Peke said.
I raised an eyebrow.
"Have you two really been together that long?" - I asked with curiosity.
"Mm‑hmm, Peke was one of my very first inventions—and definitely my best. I built her as an AI when I was little. Once I'd learned enough, I gave her a proper body and transferred her personality" - Lala nodded.
Impressive. On Earth, creating an AI with genuine emotions would be groundbreaking. Out in the galaxy, though, the technological gap is vast.
"By the way, I'd like to tell you something, Akira-sama" – Peke said suddenly.
"What?" – I asked curiously.
"Now that I know you want to have a harem, it's my duty to warn you of something" - Peke said.
"What's wrong?" – I asked confused.
"I forgot to tell you before, luckily, I just remembered, so I better tell you before I forget again" - Peke said.
"If you don't tell me you're going to forget it again" – I said.
"Ahem, what I forgot to mention is that none of the future women in your harem will be eligible for the title of Empress, even if they're married to you" - Peke said.
"Really? I mean, they're going to be my wives. Are they really not entitled to that right?" - I asked.
Funny, I had never thought about it, but now that Peke brought it up, I'm curious. If they're all going to be my wives, why is Lala the only one who can become Empress? Wouldn't it be fair for them all to share that title?
"No. As the first wife, Lala-sama is the only one with the right to assume the title of Empress once you become King. When that happens, Lala-sama will be the leader of the harem, responsible for maintaining order within it. That said, your other wives will still enjoy great prestige—besides you and Lala-sama, they'll be the most respected people in the galaxy" - Peke explained.
"You know I don't care about that, Peke. I'm not going to boss anyone around. In the future, we'll all be like sisters—how could I rule over them? I'd rather we all be equal in rank" - Lala said calmly.
"Ahem, even if that's how it ends up—and knowing your personality, it most likely will—the rest of the galaxy will still have to see things the way I described" - Peke said.
"So, we have to keep up appearances" - I said.
"Exactly" - Peke nodded.
"Well, anyway, that day is still far off, and I don't even have a harem yet" - I said.
Having a harem is harder than I thought... but I'm sure it'll be worth it in the future.
"Even though you don't have a harem now, it won't be long. I just wanted to let you know ahead of time" - Peke said.
"Anyway, I'll think about that in the future. For now, I'll just enjoy the moment" - I said without giving it much thought.
Why stress over something that's still far off? Let future Akira worry about that—not me.
And with that, we both headed home, happily chatting about what we might do tomorrow...
…
The next morning during recess...
"Are you sure there's nothing wrong with you?" - Akira asked curiously.
"Don't worry. I just have something to ask the nurse—it won't take long" - Yami replied.
"If that's what you want, we'll be waiting for you" - Akira nodded.
With that, he went off with Lala and the others to the school cafeteria.
"Alright, time to head to the infirmary" - Yami said to herself.
As she had planned over the weekend, Yami wanted to speak to the school nurse on Monday about the strange feelings she had been experiencing. Unfortunately, her plans were interrupted by the kidnapping incident, so she never got the chance. But now, with nothing unusual expected to happen, it seemed like the perfect time to finally do it… right?
Determined yet nervous, Yami walked to the infirmary.
"Is anyone there?" - she asked as she knocked on the door.
"Yes, come in" - a woman's voice responded.
Upon hearing the reply, Yami opened the door and finally saw the school nurse in person for the first time. Even she had to admit: the woman was stunning—and now she understood why so many students visited the infirmary.
She was momentarily surprised, but when her eyes focused on the woman's face, she froze in shock. That face was impossible to forget.
"You're Mikado... the most famous doctor in the galaxy. What are you doing here?" - Yami asked in disbelief.
Now, let's take a moment to talk about Mikado's background and appearance. Mikado Ryouko is a mature and striking woman with reddish-brown hair that falls to her shoulders and sharp green eyes. One of her distinguishing features is her elf-like, pointed ears, which she usually hides under her hair to blend in with humans. She typically wears a white lab coat—usually unbuttoned—over a tight pink blouse and a black skirt, accentuating her curvy figure. Her provocative style and elegant aura make her stand out to many male (and even some female) students. But wait... pointed ears?
{Note: I can remove this paragraph if you feel it's unnecessary. It doesn't influence the story, and most people already know what Mikado looks like.}
As for her identity, Yami wasn't exaggerating—Mikado was known throughout the galaxy as "The Miracle Doctor" capable of curing any disease, no matter how severe. She had never shared her medical knowledge with anyone, making her the only person in the galaxy with such capabilities. But rather than being criticized for withholding that knowledge, she was admired to the point of celebrity. Everyone wanted to be treated by her if they were seriously ill.
Contrary to what many might assume, Mikado never charged the poor. She only asked for payment from the wealthy—especially nobles—while treating those in need for free. This act of generosity, however, was considered offensive by the nobility, who viewed commoners as inferior and unworthy of such special treatment.
At first, the nobles tolerated it. They tried to persuade her through "honest" means—hoping she'd either treat them for free too or charge the poor the same exorbitant prices they had to pay. And make no mistake: being treated by Mikado cost a ridiculous amount of money. If your illness was serious, the price doubled or even tripled. This enraged the aristocracy.
Why should filthy commoners receive free care, while the so-called superior nobles had to pay massive sums? They were used to being privileged, not treated equally—or worse, less favorably.
Eventually, their patience ran out. The nobles tried to capture Mikado, either to force her to serve only them or to extract her medical knowledge through any means necessary—even torture. But Mikado, being as brilliant as she was, anticipated this and escaped.
Fortunately for her, the King held her in very high regard, for reasons known only to a few. He helped her vanish and gave her a new identity and a large sum of money so she could start over—on Earth.
"Now I'm Ryouko Mikado" – Mikado said.
"Did you change your name?" – Yami asked surprised.
"Are you surprised? I had to escape from those stupid nobles, so of course I had to change my name, otherwise, it's possible that some crazy people would have tried to capture me even here on Earth, so I had no choice but to change my identity" - Mikado explained.
"I see... I heard a while ago that you disappeared without a trace. That angered those nobles who searched for you all over the galaxy, without success, in fact, even to this day they are still looking for you" - Yami said.
"I know, but they would never imagine that I would take refuge on Earth, working as a simple school nurse" – Mikado said.
"Right, it's a very good cover" – Yami nodded.
"Thank you, but now tell me. How is it possible that Konjiki no Yami the famous assassin is here right now? Were you hired by any of those nobles to catch or kill me?" – Mikado asked.
"No, I've already left that life, now I'm just a normal girl" – Yami denied.
