Chapter 146: Chapter 146: Stay? Stay!
As the three of them sped through the air, they finally landed. For the two being carried by Hayashizaki, the experience was far more intense than the world's wildest roller coaster.
At least roller coasters have seat belts and safety bars.
But since this wasn't their first time going through something this extreme, they didn't throw up upon landing.
Standing in front of the Shinjuku barrier, Hayashizaki seemed to sense something. He looked up, and his face immediately fell.
High in the sky, Gojo Satoru also noticed his arrival. With a bright smile, he approached the three of them.
"Yo, Hayashi-san, didn't think they'd call you too."
"Tch, what kind of big event needs both you and me to show up?" Hayashizaki raised an eyebrow. "Gonna have to charge extra for this."
"Probably just a precaution." Gojo Satoru smirked mysteriously.
"Oh? You didn't tell them how strong I am, did you?" Hayashizaki showed no mercy, immediately seeing through him. "Then, why aren't you going in?"
"Because I can't." Gojo Satoru spread his hands helplessly. "This barrier works on the condition that anyone can enter and exit freely—except for Gojo Satoru. To set it up like that, they'd have to know my cursed energy inside and out."
"Still dealing with the mole problem, huh?" Hayashizaki recalled their last conversation. "Well, you figure out how to break this barrier. We're going in."
The black-haired young man flashed a mischievous grin. "You better hurry, or this trip will be a waste."
"Twenty minutes." Gojo Satoru chuckled and threw out a number.
Hayashizaki just smiled, not even bothering to test the barrier. He led Yukinoshita Yukino and Hikigaya Hachiman straight through.
He trusted Gojo Satoru's judgment—after all, the guy was probably the only one in this world who could actually go toe-to-toe with him.
As for Ryoumen Sukuna?
They'd deal with him once he had all twenty fingers.
Hayashizaki landed right at the entrance of Kabukicho's long street, a bit of distance from where Nanami Kento and Hayato were in the shopping district. But the scene here was just as horrific—if not worse.
The moment they passed through the barrier, they saw a low building's window shatter in the distance. A completely naked woman was flung out, her intestines spilling into the air before she even hit the ground.
A grotesque curse poked its head out from the broken window—only to be sliced to pieces along with the entire building by a casual slash from the black-haired young man.
"Tch, didn't hold back enough," Hayashizaki muttered, unfazed.
He turned to look at Yukinoshita Yukino, who had gone wide-eyed and was covering her mouth, struggling not to throw up. Hikigaya Hachiman was even worse—just like Yoshino Junpei back then, he was already on the ground, vomiting up all the fried noodles he had just eaten.
Well, looks like they're out of commission.
Hayashizaki glanced up at the sky, sighing internally.
He didn't blame them for not having strong enough nerves. Even he, after seeing such a brutal scene, felt a surge of anger in his chest—hence why he didn't control his strength properly and ended up cutting down an entire building.
With a helpless sigh, Hayashizaki turned to the two of them.
"You guys should head back. Stay near Gojo Satoru—at least you won't have to worry about your safety there."
"No, I can—"
Yukinoshita Yukino started to speak in a low, strained voice, but Hayashizaki cut her off immediately.
"In your current state, what exactly can you do?"
"…"
After a brief silence, Yukinoshita Yukino lowered her hand. She forced herself to swallow the bile that had risen in her throat. Taking a deep breath, as if trying to fully take in the scent of blood in the air, she locked eyes with Hayashizaki—her gaze filled with a terrifying level of determination.
"I can do this."
The black-haired girl repeated herself, her delicate face filled with determination. "I can fight."
As she locked eyes with Yukinoshita Yukino, Hayashizaki was the first to back down. He stopped arguing and turned his attention to Hikigaya Hachiman, who had just emptied the contents of his stomach.
"Are you staying too?"
"Just so you know, I won't necessarily be able to stay by your side and protect you the whole time. This is a terrorist attack launched by curse users, not some training exercise."
Hayashizaki laid it out clearly. "If you stay, you might die."
"Uh… then I should probably…"
I should probably just leave. It's not like I'd be any help anyway.
That thought was right there on the tip of his tongue, yet for some reason, he couldn't bring himself to say it.
Hikigaya Hachiman lifted his head, his gaze unsettled as he took in the hellish scene before him.
A corpse lay just five meters away.
It was a man. An hour ago, he might have been well-dressed and dignified, but now, his body was mangled beyond recognition. Half of his head was missing. The remaining half faced the dead-eyed boy directly.
Bloodshot eyes, frozen in terror and despair, stared at him, wordless but accusing.
You see this? This nightmare in front of you?
Can you really just walk away?
His lips trembled. His throat tightened as he swallowed.
Stay?
But what could he even do if he stayed? He was just a third-rate, grade-three sorcerer. If he stayed, he might be the next corpse lying in the street.
Even so… should he still stay?
Was there any reason to?
A scream suddenly rang out.
From a nearby alley, a young man and woman came running in panic. Their matching outfits made it obvious—they were a couple.
They had probably just been on a date in Shinjuku, strolling through the streets, enjoying their time together. Then, out of nowhere, the screaming started. Before they could even process what was happening, people around them started dying—dropping like flies for no reason at all.
Limbs were severed. Blood sprayed through the air. Then, indescribable monsters appeared in their sight. The street instantly fell into chaos.
So they ran. Without thinking, they ran.
And somehow, they ended up here, in Kabukicho.
They had thought an empty alley might be a safe hiding spot.
But before they could even catch their breath, the monsters found them.
"Help! Somebody, please help us!"
"Anyone! Please!"
They screamed, their voices hoarse with fear.
Deep down, they probably didn't believe anyone would actually save them.
But still, they clung to hope, praying for a miracle.
Yukinoshita Yukino reacted instantly, ready to jump in and save them.
But someone else was even faster.
A silent slash—sharp and unseen—shot from Hayashizaki's sword-bearing fingers.
The grade-three cursed spirits chasing the couple were sliced apart, their bodies turning into nothing more than cursed flesh.
Dark purple blood splattered over the couple as they stumbled to a halt. Their eyes were blank with shock.
It took them several seconds to realize—they were safe.
They had survived.
A miracle.
The moment that realization hit, tears poured from their eyes. They clung to each other, crying in relief as purple rain dripped from their clothes.
Hikigaya Hachiman saw it all.
And it shook him to his core.
Unbidden, words from Hayashizaki echoed in his mind—words spoken during their summer training camp.
"I don't want my students to grow up into people who are content just scraping by under someone else's shadow. It's fine to endure for a while, but you can't be satisfied with just that."
"So I'm going to teach them to hunger for strength."
Just running away… how could that ever make someone strong?
Not running—standing your ground. That's how the strong think.
And he? He was anything but strong.
A new thought, one that completely contradicted the beliefs he had always held, clashed inside his head.
It burned, like his brain was overheating.
Yet the sheer brutality of the reality before him cooled it just as fast.
"I…"
A reason to stay and fight curses?
Am I an idiot?! What the hell am I even thinking?!
Saving people—what more reason do I need?!
"I'm staying too."
The dead-eyed boy finally spoke.
…
