Chapter 39: Sky Island
For saleCricket re-explained Noland's story, revealing that he was one of Noland's descendants. He even gave the Straw Hats an old record of Noland's logbooks. The Straw Hats were excited as they finally found a clue to Sky Island, cheering as they held the book.
"Alright!" Cricket declared. "I've decided to give you a hand," he said, seeing their enthusiasm made him happy. "But first, let me explain a little more about Sky Island. Although it's up to you whether you'll believe it or not," Cricket remarked.
"Okay," Luffy said eagerly, hanging on Cricket's every word. Montblanc Cricket proceeded with his explanation, describing the Emperonimbus clouds that were high up in the sky, large enough to block the sun completely. He explained that the method of reaching such clouds was by riding the knock-up stream, a strong uprising gush of water that reached far up to those clouds.
"To think such clouds could exist," Nami marveled.
"But won't our ship be torn apart if we try to ride them?" Nami expressed her concern.
"Well, normally yes, but if you get the timing correct, then you'll be fine. If there's a Sky Island, those clouds are your best chance," Cricket said reassuringly. "We can help you prepare your ship for the ride, but it'll take some time to get ready. And lucky you, there should be one happening tomorrow," Cricket added.
"Right, right. Wait, you're saying our only way to reach Sky Island is by riding that ridiculous current?" Usopp exclaimed in disbelief.
"Weren't you listening at all?" Nami said, exasperated.
"I-I mean, it's ridiculous. Don't you think there's no way we can survive that?" Usopp said, his voice trembling.
"Come on, Usopp, don't be like that. And besides, is this really the craziest thing we've done?" Lucas said, trying to lift his spirits.
"I'm not a hundred percent certain of this, but there really is a substantial probability of you succeeding," Cricket said, his words leaving Usopp somewhat speechless.
"Let's eat first, then we'll start with your ship," Cricket suggested. Luffy cheered happily at the mention of food. Cricket, the monkey bros, and the Straw Hats gathered for a meal, and afterward, they got to work. Lucas helped with prepping the Merry, while the other Straw Hats went to hunt for the Southbird.
"That's not even a sail, you dolts. If you don't know how to fix a ship, then don't chip in," Masira, one of the monkey bros, said. Lucas had requested to rebuild the mast, but what he built looked like nothing of the sort.
"Trust me, this is perfect. It'll get us where we need to go, no problem," Lucas replied with a crazy grin on his face. "Look..." He explained to them what he planned to do.
"Well, I'll be. I've never heard of such a crazy plan in my life, but it should work," Cricket remarked. "But don't tell the other guys, okay? It's a surprise," he added with a wink. "Once we arrive, I can reconstruct this to be a proper mast, so it's fine," Lucas said, laughing.
"I don't know if I should be impressed or freaked out," Shoujou said, shaking his head.
Suddenly, a pirate ship pulled up by Cricket's place. "I heard that you've found some treasure, so I came here..." Bellamy said as he disembarked with his crew.
"Haaa! What are you doing here?" Lucas turned, looking at Bellamy with a scary face.
"Y-you! What are you doing here?" the Bellamy pirates exclaimed, their eyes wide with fear.
"I don't think I need a reason to be here, do I now?" Lucas said. "And you, here to steal someone else's treasure, I see," he added, his voice dripping with menace. "What was it again? Oh right, 'Stealing someone else's hard-earned treasure has a distinct flavor to it, no?'" Lucas muttered as he stepped forward.
"Y-you've got it all wrong," Bellamy said fearfully.
"Since I'm already done with my part, I'll let you guys carry on while I clean up this riffraff," Lucas said, stepping forward with determination. "Those Straw Hats sure are something," Masira remarked as they continued their preparations.
"Chhh! Stand strong, men. He's just one person against all of us!" Bellamy said, trying to rally his crew.
"I admit it was not like me to act so rudely before, but sometimes a person's just gotta let loose," Lucas muttered as he vanished from sight, reappearing behind all of the Bellamy pirates. "They were big spenders before, so they must be loaded," he said, his face turning from serious to playful as he plundered their ship. The Bellamy pirates stood there, not understanding what had happened, before collapsing to the ground, filled with wounds and passing out.
When the Straw Hats came back that night, they saw the Bellamy pirates all tied up on their ship, and the Merry was remodeled and ready to go.
"So, did you get it?" Lucas asked.
"Sure did," Luffy replied with a smile.
"We're also finished with the ship," Lucas said.
"What is that anyway?" Chopper wondered, looking at the bizarre mast.
"Don't worry about it. You'll see when the time comes," Lucas said with a grin.
"I think it looks cool," Luffy said, his eyes gleaming with excitement.
"Will that sail?" Nami doubted.
"Don't worry about it, okay? Just make sure you hold on tight tomorrow," Lucas said. The sun was going to rise soon, so instead of resting, they went on to finish all the preparations for their departure.
"Say, what did those guys want anyway?" Usopp remarked.
"Nothing much, just gave me an apology gift," Lucas replied.
"They must be good guys then," Chopper said, his eyes wide with innocence.
"And they were generous too," Lucas added. Nami caught on as she looked at the Bellamy pirates' ship. It looked pillaged, and she wondered how much Lucas might have taken from them. She hadn't checked their storage yet, but she bet it must be filled with gold right now.
"Saruyama alliance!" Cricket called out, and both Masira and Shoujou, along with their crews, responded. "Let's give our friends a warm departure, you hear!" Cricket said.
They set sail, with Masira and Shoujou's ships pulling the Merry as they headed out to sea. "Right then, this is as far as we can take you," Masira and Shoujou said as they loosened the ropes pulling the Merry.
"Whaaat! You're gonna leave us just like that?" Usopp said in a panicked voice. Up ahead was a giant cloud, casting darkness over the sea below, and a whirlpool that could swallow a Sea King. Luffy was excited, while Nami, Chopper, and Usopp were filled with panic. Lucas, on the other hand, was also excited as they approached the whirlpool.
