Chapter 40: Sea of Clouds
"Hey, wait! You never said anything about going into a giant whirlpool!" Nami panicked.
"Luffy! Come on, it's not too late to turn back! Let's hurry!" Usopp said in a frenzy, but it was too late. Nothing was penetrating Luffy's rubber head. Excitement and thrill filled his eyes, eager for what lay ahead.
"I think it's too late to try and persuade our captain," Robin said calmly.
"And besides, we're already being swallowed by the whirlpool," Zoro added.
"We're dooooomed!" the three scaredy-cats cried out. But just as the Going Merry was about to fall into the whirlpool, it landed on the water, not even falling.
"Huh," the three exclaimed at the anticlimactic result.
"Here it comes. You better hold on to something fast," Lucas warned, glancing around with a knowing look.
"What are you..." Nami and Usopp began, their faces dripping with nervous sweat as the water beneath them began to bulge up.
"Haha! Straw Hats, I've come for your 560 million Beri bounty!" a hobo pirate yelled as his ship approached the Merry.
"Huh? What are you talking about? What bounty?" Luffy asked, confused. The hobo-looking pirate took out two bounties, and his sharp-shooting mate presented the third from afar.
"Hold on a minute," Usopp said, pulling out his binoculars to see what they were showing. "He's right! Zoro's bounty is sixty million, Luffy's bounty is a hundred million, and LUCAS'S BOUNTY IS FOUR HUNDRED MILLION!" Usopp exclaimed, his voice filled with shock.
"Woah, really! Say, Usopp, check and see if mine is there," Sanji asked eagerly.
"Sorry, they don't have it," Usopp replied quickly. The other three were filled with joy, hearing about their high bounties.
"Haha! A hundred million. I have a hundred million Beri bounty," Luffy rejoiced.
"I understand that defeating Crocodile is a big deal, but why does Lucas's bounty have to be so high?" Nami wondered aloud.
"Could it be because of those abilities he displayed? They might have made the Marines see him as a great threat," Robin said thoughtfully.
"Fufu! You hear that? I'm a threat," Lucas said pompously, his chest puffing out with pride. But their rejoicing was cut short as the bulge grew bigger.
"Crap, we forgot about..." Usopp and Nami muttered as the knock-up stream erupted, sending the Merry high into the air.
"The Knock-up streeeeam!" they cried as the Merry shot up.
"Ahhhhhhh!" Usopp and Nami screamed as the Merry soared higher and higher.
"Crap, look!" Sanji pointed as a Sea King that had been swallowed by the whirlpool fell from the sky. "Soon we'll start falling too if we don't do something," he warned.
Lucas stepped forward, cracking his knuckles. "Did you forget what I told you?" he said, transforming into Swampfire. "I racked my Galvan brain to come up with this rocket booster that could propel the Merry without increasing too much weight," he muttered. "As I said, hold on to something," he advised, turning into Ultimate Swampfire. He extended his hands to two holes facing the mast, which led to the rocket booster above the Merry.
Looking at Lucas's stance, Usopp and Nami could guess what was going to happen next. "No. Please don't do what you're about to do," they pleaded.
Luffy smiled eagerly as Lucas fired blue flames from his hands. Not long after, the Merry shot through the sky like a rocket. Luffy laughed with joy, canceling out the screams of Usopp and Nami. The Merry passed through the clouds, bursting through and landing on a cloudy ocean.
"Pant. Pant. Is... Pant. Everyone okay?" Zoro asked, his voice heavy with relief.
"I thought I wouldn't make it," Usopp said, his face pale.
As they resettled themselves, they marveled at the sight in front of them. "Amazing! It's a sea of clouds!" Nami exclaimed, her eyes wide with wonder.
"This really is something," Lucas said, suddenly pulling out his omni-armor. "I want to savor this moment," he said as a mini drone popped out of his armor. He then turned back to normal.
"Huh, what's that?" the others wondered, watching him curiously.
"It's nothing much," Lucas replied, making the drone invisible and setting it to take pictures and record scenes from their trip.
"Huh, the log pose is still pointing up, though," Nami remarked, glancing at it.
"Hmm. Maybe we need to sail higher," Robin suggested.
"Nooo!" Nami and Usopp rejected the idea, not wanting to go through that again.
"Come on, guys. I think that was fun," Lucas said, smiling.
"Only maniacs would enjoy that," the two retorted.
"Chhh. Anyway, what Robin said was right. While I was in my omni-armor mode, I detected life above where we are. That direction," Lucas said, pointing.
"Omni-what? Wait, you mean to tell me you could detect Sky Island with that suit of yours?" Nami asked angrily.
"Uhhh... I didn't say that," Lucas replied, trying to avoid the question.
Nami got furious as she realized he could have saved them so much trouble. "Did we even need to hunt that stupid bird?" she raged.
"Calm down, would ya? Ahem. It's a little bit complicated," Lucas said.
"Then uncomplicate it!" she yelled. As they argued, Usopp drew everyone's attention by diving into the cloud sea.
"So why did he dive in there again?" Lucas asked, watching Usopp disappear.
"It's been a while now," Zoro said, his concern growing.
"It could be that there's no sea floor," Robin suggested, the reality sinking in that Usopp might have fallen through the clouds.
"Oh no!" Luffy exclaimed, stretching his hand into the clouds. "I don't know where he is," he said, his voice filled with worry as he stretched his arm deeper and deeper.
"Let me help," Robin said, using her powers to create eyes on Luffy's hand as they searched. "There," she said. "You can pull now," she added as Luffy retracted his hand.
"Puaaaa!" Usopp gasped as he was pulled out, his face dull with shock. The others sighed in relief as he emerged.
"No, wait, something's following him," Nami said, her voice tense. A giant octopus and eel-like creature surfaced, but Zoro acted swiftly, cutting them down before they could attack.
"That was odd. It felt like a balloon when I cut it," Zoro muttered.
"It makes sense that the animals here would evolve differently to survive up here in the sky," Robin explained.
"Usopp, are you okay?" Chopper asked, running to his side as he lay on the deck.
"Gyaa! My pants!" Usopp screamed, pulling out a strange fish from his pants that seemed to have gotten there during the rescue.
"Fascinating. I guess this would be called a sky fish," Robin said, examining it. Luffy took it from her hands and handed it to Sanji.
"The creatures here sure are strange," Zoro said, his eyes narrowing.
"And tasty too," Luffy added, grinning as he took a bite of the sky fish.
