Chapter 10: partner
"That's a lie—she met someone. He might be her life partner."
At that moment, Edward, who had remained silent, spoke up.
As his sister approached, he sensed her confused thoughts. It truly surprised him.
Why was it that, unlike with him, Alice had never had a vision about Edythe's partner?
Edythe, realizing her thoughts had been exposed, rushed over and punched Edward in the stomach.
"Shut up! You're as annoying as ever. I feel like hitting you every time I see you."
Edward, caught off guard, stumbled backward. Even though she hadn't used her full strength, the punch was still a bit rough.
"Wait—explain this. Is what Edward said true?" Esme stepped in.
Everyone was stunned. They all knew Alice had never seen Edythe's partner in her visions.
"Who is it? Why didn't I have a vision of the two of you?" Alice asked, curious.
She had some visions of Edythe, but never of her partner—which made her all the more intrigued.
She once theorized that Edythe's partner might already be dead—or may not exist at all.
Edythe knew she couldn't hide it from her family. The reason she wanted to keep it secret was that she was still confused herself.
Everyone had found their match—was she going to be the only one left alone forever? Even Edward would find his match eventually. And that made her jealous.
It was for that reason that she left the Cullens and traveled to clear her mind. She had hoped she might find her partner somewhere during her journey around the world.
But the results had disappointed her. So she had finally returned after a long time.
"I don't know who he is, but when our eyes met—it was like I'd found the part of me that was missing," Edythe said.
"What does he look like? Is he handsome?" Rosalie asked.
"Yes. Maybe we know who it is," Jasper added.
Edythe thought for a moment, recalling details she had observed.
"He had black hair, pale skin, a very beautiful face. He looked like one of us… but his eyes…"
She paused, as if trying to remember something difficult to express. Everyone noticed, but no one interrupted.
"His eyes sparkled like a beautiful blue sky. I felt like I could lose myself just staring into them." Edythe said, glancing around at everyone.
"When you said that, I felt like I knew him—but the person I know has brown eyes," Emmett said.
"Yes, based on your description, I thought it might be Mark. But he has brown eyes," Edward confirmed.
Still, for some reason, Edward felt like it could be the same person—but he didn't want to say so without proof.
Edythe, having heard them mention someone who fit her description, asked, "Who is this Mark?"
"He's a boy from our school. He moved to Forks this year. He's in the same grade as us," Alice explained.
"He's very handsome—like one of us. Everything matches your description, except for the eye color," Rosalie added.
Edythe became intrigued. To be honest, now that she had found her possible partner, she felt drawn to him.
"I'm interested in him. Carlisle, did you take care of my school transfer?" Edythe asked.
"Well, everything's set. You just have to go to the office Monday morning and you can start school," Carlisle replied.
"Thanks. I'm looking forward to it."
Edythe said with a radiant smile, as she walked to the glass window and gazed at the sky with a sparkle of new plans in her eyes.
...
The night passed quickly—Mark hadn't been able to close his eyes.
Although he didn't need sleep, the real reason was the person he saw that night.
After packing everything up, Mark returned home.
After descending the mountains, Mark entered the city of Forks, caught a taxi, and headed straight home.
After paying, he got out of the car and entered the house.
Noticing it was empty, Mark realized his father was working today. After showering and changing clothes, he headed to the kitchen.
He found a note from his dad saying he wouldn't be coming home for lunch, and that Mark should eat alone.
Tossing the note aside, Mark made something quick to eat and spent the rest of the day watching TV.
