Chapter 23: Revelations
The day of the funeral came, Dean stood as a pillar of support for the Clearwater's. A tower to lean on for Leah and her mom, and a protective bubble for Seth, who he draped a reassuring arm over.
"How you doing little buddy?" asked Dean.
"Fine," he croaked.
"I hate funerals, makes everything that much more depressing, we should be at home, celebrating the good times," said Dean.
"I like that sound of that," said Leah wiping her eyes.
"Funerals aren't meant to be fun dear," said Sue halfheartedly.
"And you don't see a problem with that?" asked Dean.
"Dean," Leah warned, squeezing his arm.
"You know, I'm kind of getting tired of my name being used that way, Leah," Dean mocked.
"What are you doing right now," Leah hissed.
Sue gave him the disapproving side-eye as she left to go take care of matters and meet people.
"Sorry, I think the hunger is finally getting to me, I haven't had anything since Laurent," said Dean looking apologetic.
"Who's Laurent?" asked Seth.
"Later, we'll have a pack meeting, and you'll learn everything," said Dean.
Bored and hungry, Dean barely managed to maintain composure since his initial slip-up. The whole thing became a slog that he could care less about. Needless to say, he wasn't planning on attending any future funerals regardless of who they were for, so Sue better live forever.
...
"Glad that's over, come on, pack meeting at Sam's and Emily's," said Dean, leading Leah and Seth away.
"Hey little buddy, heard you joined, welcome to the pack," Embry greeted Seth as they entered.
"Hey everybody," Seth greeted back.
"Here Seth, I made cookies," said Emily, walking over with a plate of freshly made crispy treats.
"Thanks," said Seth, grabbing a few.
"Hey, I helped," said Kim indignantly.
"Right, Kim helped," said Emily nicely, while a couple of the guys who witnessed her help laughed.
"Shut up," Kim pouted, "I'll learn eventually."
"Of course, you will," reassured Jared, one arm hugging her with his free hand while holding his drink.
Dean spots Paul and walks over, "Paul a word," he says taking him aside.
"Look I know I fucked up, it just slipped out, but I am trying, you know I am," argued Paul, wishing to stim off any anger directed at him.
"I do, and I meant it when I said that's all anyone can ask, but just as you find it difficult to be respectful, I find it increasingly difficult not to beat you bloody," said Dean so casually it made Paul gulp.
"You did good though," said Dean, referring back to the redhead chase. "I want you with me when I go for a hunt later, are you up for it?"
"I am," said Paul, ready to prove himself further.
Heading back over to the others, a few of the guys quickly turned their heads away in an effort to appear like they weren't listening.
"Alright shall we get started," said Dean, "Let's discuss how we're going to capture the redhead."
Unable to hold it in any longer, Jake suddenly broke his silence, "Her name's Victoria, and I know what she's after."
Dean sighed, already knowing where this was going, "Bella."
Jake gave a slow nod.
"You knew she was after Bella this entire time and you never said anything!" growled Leah.
"Not the entire time," defended Jake.
Leah's eyes narrowed, "Since when?"
Jake looked away in guilt realizing it was before the incident with Harry and Leah lunged at him.
Dean caught her, holding her tight, "Leah, wait."
"Wait?! This bastard knew what she was after and didn't say anything!" shouted Leah, struggling to get at him.
"Let's hear him out first, then we'll decide what needs to be done," said Dean.
The struggles lessened until it was safe to let her go without attacking.
"What if he runs?" asked Leah.
"Don't worry Leah, I won't let him run," said Quil moving behind Jake, thoroughly disgusted with his friend along with everyone else in the room.
Jake recoiled as if slapped.
"And if he does, you'll catch him," said Dean.
"Damn right," Leah agreed.
"She's after Bella okay," said Jake throwing his arms up, "and I didn't say anything mostly because I forgot but also because I was afraid you would want to sacrifice her, and I couldn't allow that," he said, trying to justify himself.
"You would choose her over the tribe?" questioned Sam angrily.
"Don't give me that, what if it had been Emily she was after or Kim," argued Jake.
"You dare compare people we've known our whole lives to some outsider you've barely spent a month with at any given time!" shouted Sam.
Jake pursed his lips unable to say anything.
A surprised Emily rubs Sam back to calm him, having never seen him get this worked up.
"Where is Bella? Why hasn't this redhead gone after her directly?" asked Dean.
"You're too late, Alice Cullen came and took Bella away to go save her leech lover from the Vultry," said Jake.
"Do you mean the Volturi?" asked Dean seriously.
"Yeah them, you know them?" asked Jake.
"They serve as the vampire's ruling body, the one who maintains order and upholds their self-imposed rules," said Dean.
"Anyways, she's likely bringing the Cullens back here," said Jake, feeling more than a little annoyed at that bit of information.
...
"Can you believe she still wants that leech after what he did to her, and get this, she says he can read minds, though he can't read her for whatever reason," said Jake, spilling his guts of everything he's kept bottled up.
This surprises Dean whose thoughts drift back to when they were kids and Bella and Jake made a blood pact to always be friends before she left.
"Really? Then why does he always look the way he does, all depressed and shit, do you know how many people would kill for a superpower, specifically his superpower?" asked Embry.
"Supposedly he can't control it or whatever, same with the other, what's his name, Jasper, and all the emotions or whatever," said Jake.
"Huh," said Dean having a thought. Leah was the only one who noticed as Jake went on.
"Oh, and the pixie, she says she can see the future," said Jake.
"And you're only telling us all this now, are you fucking serious right now," said Paul bringing everyone back to reality as they got caught up with the new information.
"Didn't think it mattered since we have a treaty with them," said Jake, though not even he believed it.
"Silence!" said Dean, ending the shouting before it began in earnest.
"All those in favor of seeing Jake punished?" asked Dean.
Everyone's hands went up, and Jake's head lowered ashamed.
"Okay, we'll discuss terms of punishment later, for now, we need to get back on topic," said Dean.
Leah sneered, "I say we use Bella as bait."
"I'll die before I let you do that!" yelled Jake.
"You just might!" shouted Leah.
"Enough!" Dean roared.
"Bella isn't here right now, so let's come up with something else in the meantime," said Dean, putting frowns on both Leah's and Jacob's faces.
"What can we do if she has that evasive gift or whatever?" asked Jared.
"We need a plan to trap her, trap her in a way she can't escape," said Dean.
"Is that even possible?" asked Embry.
"Sure it is, I proved it when I tackled her, and Paul proved it when he wounded her, moments when she's distracted are key," said Dean.
"What do you suggest?" asked Sam.
"Highly trained coordinated relentless attacks," said Dean.
...
With the meeting over they all went their separate ways.
"We can't punish him now, but trust me, he won't get away with it," said Dean.
"Promise me," said Leah.
"I promise," said Dean.
Thinking back on the meeting, Leah remembered that look she saw, "I saw inside that you thought of something when he was talking about the vamps."
"Yeah," said Dean.
"Well, fess up," said Leah.
"Alright look, I have this idea but under no circumstances can it get out, especially to the Cullens lest they change their diet," said Dean seriously.
"Like I'd talk to them," Leah snorted.
"Talk to no one if that freak can read minds," said Dean.
"Yeah, yeah, tell me already," said Leah.
"I think they can't control their powers because they drink animal blood," said Dean, "Think about it, yellow is a sign of sickness, they're unknowingly weakening themselves with their unusual diet."
Leah eyes widened, "Holy shit!"
