Twilight's Wolves

Chapter 24: Feeding Time

At Nightfall, Dean asked, "You ready for this Paul?" walking to the woods.

"Absofuckinglutely," said Paul, feeling upbeat at being chosen.

"Good, most of the vamps have vacated the area or have been driven out due to the Newborn activities, so it's time we track them down and find out where they're based and grab a snack or two for the trip back," said Dean, his stomach rumbling.

"Right..." said Paul, still a little unnerved by his diet.

Shifting, Dean takes the lead, catching a scent much farther out since they started their patrols beyond their territory. They might not have known what was attacking them, but they learned to stay away.

(Hm, it leads into Seattle, I think Charlie mentioned something about more gang violence at night over there. Must be what they're calling vampire attacks,) said Dean, looking at the city lights from a distance.

(Now what?) asked Paul.

(Now, we find some clothes, a chain that won't break, and try and catch one on the outskirts,) said Dean.

Fully clothed, Dean and Paul walked the streets at night searching for prey.

"Won't they smell us?" asked Paul.

"Possibly, I'm counting on the fact that they're Newborns and can't differentiate between city smells and ours," said Dean.

"Yeah, even I'm having trouble getting past the city fumes, can't imagine living here," said Paul, wrinkling his nose.

"Too many people," said Dean, turning his head, eyes dilating when he caught a fresh scent.

Stopping Paul, Dean pointed with his head and whispered, "There, see them?"

Paul's brows furrowed, "That's more than a few, and they're feeding openly out here, dark alley or not, anyone could walk by."

"Any meal can, sure, but I agree they are being reckless, if word reaches the Volturi, they'll come and wipe everything out to hide things," said Dean, preparing the chain to snag one.

"Let's see if we can't get one without alerting the others," said Dean.

"Are you sure? There's a lot of them," said Paul nervously.

Dean's stomach growled, "I'm sure."

They heard a scream as another victim fell to the group.

"And now's the best time," said Dean moving forward.

Paul cursed his recklessness, feeling like he was the voice of reason for the first time in his life.

Unwilling to speak out directly against him, Paul followed blindly, praying to the spirits everything worked out.

There were a couple of hesitant members who already fed some, watching the aggressive group at a distance. Infighting seemed commonplace amongst them.

Picking one of the weaker-looking ones, Dean hid around a corner and kicked a can to lure it over.

A few responded, but only the weak one was willing to push past the smell and take a look, hoping for a fresh kill all to himself.

Understanding one's prey was the first step in overcoming it.

Knowing its ever-present need to feed, Dean let himself be spotted as he rounded the far corner.

The vamp looked around to make sure none of the others saw him before following with a grin, licking his lips.

Paul waiting at the end waved at the vamp that appeared, "Hey."

Distracting him from Dean, who quickly wrapped a chain around its neck and sprinted off to the nearest woods, dragging it behind him.

Seeing the coast was clear, Paul followed soon after happy that the plan worked out.

Some night goers spotted their quick-moving forms which made Paul think of cops but figured they would be long gone by then if they were believed at all.

By the time the vamp had enough sense to react, it was already too late as the next thing he knew a giant maw of teeth was tearing his limbs off, one painful scream at a time.

Scarfing down the appetizer, Dean shifted back to human, stringing the vamp up a tree, dangling it there dripping venom.

"Here's what going to happen, are you listening to me?" asked Dean slapping the screaming vamp, "I said here's what going to happen, you're going to tell us everything you know about the little group you got going on, or you're going to get eaten, slowly," he emphasized.

"I want my mommy," cried the vamp.

Paul snorted, only moments later horrified when he realized the implications of what was happening.

"Tch, this isn't going to get us anywhere, we're going to need a new one, this one is too young," said Dean.

Paul wavered, "Dean, I don't know about this man, feels wrong."

"I brought you with me because I thought you could handle it; what do you think we're doing here? What do you think they are?" he asked grabbing the vamp, showing the venom, "They're Newborns, turned against their will at all ages to serve another, to feed off others. They're already dead, don't be going soft on me now Paul, I need you to watch my back," said Dean.

Always ready for a fight was one thing but capturing and torturing was another thing entirely. Brushing aside his conflicted feelings, Paul tried to lighten the mood, "So, you're saying you eat dead people."

"Everyone eats the dead, except vampires, and other parasites," said Dean feeling philosophical.

Silencing Paul until a thought came to him, "What about leaf eaters, like herbivores or nut and fruit eaters?" Unintentionally shitting all over his moment.

His profound insight ruined, Dean frowned, "It's like you want me to hate you."

Baffled at his response, Paul's mouth opened slightly and then closed.

Shifting, Dean ate everything except the pelvis and knew he needed another.

"Time for round two," said Dean, walking back to the alley where they found them.

Slowing as they neared, "I think a couple of them are searching for their friend, this will make things easier, this time we'll both grab one, get your chain ready, and attack after me," said Dean.

In position, they listened to a male and female talking about their new lives and what it all meant.

When the male was facing away from him, Dean made his move, wrapping the chain around his neck and taking off.

"Tanner!" screamed the female right before she faced a similar fate from Paul.

Once in the woods, Dean shifted and prepared to tear into the male but unlike the first this one was ready.

Jumping to his feet Tanner swung the chain at Dean whacking him across the face, and while it stung, it didn't stop him as his jaws came in biting the nearest right arm.

Swinging his free left arm, Tanner punched him hard, caving in the right side of his face. Taking the arm, Dean retreated into the dark to lick his wounds, whining in pain.

Paul showed up right as it was going down, shifting, he attacked the vamp hunched over clutching at his missing arm from behind.

"Tanner!" the female screamed a warning.

(You okay?) asked Paul as he dodged a wild defensive strike that saw the vamp fall to his backside, leaving his legs wide open.

(I was careless, tend to forget how strong Newborns are when you hardly ever fight them,) said Dean.

Sinking his teeth into his unguarded ankle, Paul suddenly found himself flying through the air, foot still in mouth, as the female vamp pushed him away.

A cry from the male vamp had the female panicked as she realized another limb was taken, "Oh my gosh, no Tanner, please be okay," she cried dry tears due to her vampire physique while cradling him.

"Ali, Ali look at me, you need to run, go get help," said Tanner.

"But you'll die if I leave," said Ali.

"You'll die if you stay," said Tanner.

"No, I can help," said Ali.

"You can help get revenge if you leave now!" said Tanner.

Already healed, Dean put himself opposite Paul, (Let's end this.)

"Go!" Tanner yelled again, pushing her away as the two giant wolves charged.

(I got the girl, you finish tearing his limbs off,) said Dean giving chase.

She was fast and may have even made it to the city if she hadn't slowed when hearing her friend cry out in agony behind her.

A white-hot flash of pain shot through her, and then she was screaming at the top of her lungs as her legs were torn from her body and dragged back to hell.

The male vampire was hanging gasping in fear more out of habit than anything as Ali was strung up beside him.

"No, Ali!" Tanner cried.

"Tanner," came the weak response, falling in and out of awarness as her mind tried to cope with what was happening to her.

Tanner gritted his teeth, " Don't touch her!"

Turning human, Dean scoffed, "Save it, I'm sure you've done worse."

"Not by choice!" shouted Tanner.

"Changing sure, but everything else, don't fool yourself," said Dean, gathering the limbs into a pile.

"Listen up," Dean smacks her," I said listen up."

"Leave her alone!" Tanner yelled furiously.

Paul backhands him, "Shut up."

"As I was saying, you will tell us everything you know about the Newborns here or you will suffer slowly, and if you're good I may even reattach a limb or two, before the end," said Dean.

"What do you mean reattach?" asked a confused Tanner, missing the all-important last bit that was said.

"You don't know? As long as a vampire limb isn't burned or destroyed in any way, it can or will at some point reattach and heal, getting it torn off isn't the end all be all," said Dean, intentionally feeding his false hope.

"Okay, what do you want to know?" asked Tanner.

"Everything about the Newborns, from what you're doing here, to your goals and who made you or leads you," said Dean.

"Someone named Riley, and his girlfriend Victoria made us, telling us how some big bad coven called the Cullens and their pet wolves, is out there and needs to be put down, I"m guessing that's you," said Tanner.

Paul hit him again, "We're nobody's pets!" he growled.

"Victoria? Curly Redhead about yay big?" asked Dean holding his hand out.

"Yeah, that's her," said Tanner, glaring at Paul.

"Great, so we're the targets of the army, fanfuckingtastic," said Paul.

"It's good we know now, gives us time," said Dean.

"We should just give her Bella," said Paul seriously.

"Might be hard with the Cullens coming back and Jake defending her," said Dean.

"Fuck!" exclaimed Paul, punching a smaller tree, toppling it over.

"We'll be ready," Dean assured.

"Uh, hey, what about my limbs?" asked Tanner.

"Right, I did say you could have one or two before the end, how about a leg and an arm, last chance to feel either of them again," said Dean picking them up.

"Wait what, what do you mean last chance?" asked Tanner fearfully, "You said you would let us go."

Dean's eyebrows furrowed, "I said no such thing, Paul, hold him."

"You lying piece of shit, you said you'd give our limbs back and let us go," he yelled as one of his legs was reattached, instantly trying to kick him only to flail about helplessly.

"No I didn't, I said from the beginning that you either talk and die fast or don't and die slow," said Dean, putting the left arm on.

"There we go, how do you feel? Ready to die yet?" asked Dean casually.

"Fuck you asshole!" shouted Tanner, trying to swing at him.

"You should accept your fate like your girl here," said Dean looking at the lifeless girl staring out into the abyss.

"I'll Kill You, I'll Fucking Kill You!" screamed Tanner.

"Alright we're done here, time to eat," said Dean, shifting.

"Eat? Wait Nooooo!" Tanner wailed as the golden wolf's jaws became his final sight.
