Viego in Arknights

Chapter 11: (VIA) Chapter 11: Ines's Head, Like a Potato?

Viego followed W and Ines for a while, arriving at a campsite as evening approached.

Similar to the last camp, it was full of Sarkaz mercenaries. Hearing W call Ines "Captain," Viego figured they were probably all mercenaries under Ines's command.

Viego was still sharing a tent with W, but it wasn't inside the camp. Instead, it was a single tent set up separately outside the main encampment, likely the one originally meant for the group of mercenaries from W's previous camp. It was just that those mercenaries were all dead now, so only W and Viego remained.

"So, that guy named Heavily is the leader of this whole mercenary company, and I need his approval to stay?" Viego asked, sitting by the campfire and looking at W beside him.

"Something like that," W replied, skewering three potatoes on a wooden stick and roasting them over the fire. "It doesn't matter if he acknowledges you or not. You're my person, you follow my lead. You don't need his approval."

Viego raised an eyebrow. "The way you say that, it makes me sound like a kept man you're sponsoring."

W glanced at Viego and sneered contemptuously. "You? A kept man? Are you even worthy?"

Viego touched his own face, a little puzzled. "Am I that ugly? That can't be right, can it?" He remembered Viego was supposed to be quite handsome, in a wickedly charming, arrogant, and incomparably domineering way. Regardless of his portrayal in the plot, his appearance was indeed handsome, at least by the aesthetic standards of most men. Since transmigrating to this other world, he hadn't had a chance to look at his own face in a mirror or a reflection of water. It had been three days, and he didn't even know what he looked like, only that he definitely had white hair.

W ignored Viego, as if disdaining to respond. A few moments later, she picked up the stick from the fire, staring at the potatoes on it and examining them closely.

"W, what are you looking at?"

W turned to look at Viego. "Do you think this potato looks like Ines's head?"

Viego: "?"

"W, this is the first time I knew your imagination was so rich," a cold female voice came from behind Viego.

"???" Viego turned around in shock, looking at Ines who was standing just five steps away from him.

How did this woman get here? She didn't make a single sound.

"Heavily wants to see you." Ines looked at Viego, her words concise. "Come with me."

Viego looked at W. "W, should I go?"

The smile on W's face vanished for a moment, but Viego felt that her mood had actually improved, as if she were pleased with his reaction.

"Then go," W said. "You remember the way back, right, Viego? If you can't remember, just have Captain Ines bring you back. Don't get lost." After speaking, she looked at Ines again, her smile full of ill intent. "Viego scrambled his brain in a fall, so he might have a lot of questions. Captain Ines, don't mind him too much, okay?"

The three mercenary teams—W's, Ines's, and Heavily's—were camped separately. This was to avoid becoming too large a target and being wiped out by an enemy Caster squad. W knew that her camp was the furthest from Heavily's, with Ines's camp in the middle. It would take at least fifteen minutes to get from here to see Heavily. Fifteen minutes was enough time for Viego to ask a lot of questions.

I hope that after fifteen minutes, Ines can still maintain her current expressionless face, W thought with wicked glee.

Ines said nothing. She turned expressionlessly and led Viego away.

"Uh… Ines, can I ask you a question?" Viego's voice faintly drifted back to W's ears from the woods.

W took a bite of the warm potato in her hand, feeling as if she had just bitten into Ines's head, and couldn't help but laugh.

...

"What do you want to ask?" Ines glanced at Viego. "If it concerns privacy, I will refuse to answer your question."

"You and W don't seem to get along?"

Ines denied it. "No. W just joined recently. It's normal for me to be wary of her. There is no personal grudge between us."

At this point, she didn't forget to warn Viego. "—Remember, I will be just as wary of you. If I deem you a threat, then I will eliminate you."

"Well then," Viego raised an eyebrow. "To be on Miss Ines's mind every day like this, I think I should feel honored and delighted?"

"Flowery words are meaningless," Ines said coldly. "Heavily might accept you, but I will not. Viego, you will become a source of danger."

"What do you mean?" Viego frowned, confused. "I hate riddles." From this point of view, Viego still preferred someone like W. Even though she was a crazy bitch with a filthy mouth who would try to castrate you at the drop of a hat, at least she was direct and wouldn't speak in riddles that people couldn't understand.

—Of course, it was also possible that W's poor vocabulary simply didn't allow her to speak in such complex riddles.

Ines met his words with silence.

"Alright then, another question. Why are there two moons in the sky? Do they have names? I actually asked W this question, but she just told me to get lost…" Viego looked at the silent Ines. "Ines, why aren't you talking?"

"..." Ines's voice was cold. "For such a meaningless question, you should go ask Heavily."

"Well then." Viego shrugged. "Then I'll ask something meaningful… What will happen if Heavily doesn't acknowledge me?"

"You will be abandoned. If W wants to take you with her, then she will be abandoned along with you," Ines said bluntly. "If you are not acknowledged, then you cannot move with us."

"Understood. I also want to ask..."

"Go ask Heavily." This time, Ines directly interrupted Viego. "He will answer you."

"Alright." Viego compliantly shut his mouth. His gaze shifted downwards, landing on the spiral dagger at Ines's waist. He tried to resist, but couldn't help it. "Miss Ines, why is your sword shaped like this? Is there something special about it? Does it make you stronger in battle?"

Ines said nothing, just forging ahead with her head down.

"Why…"

Ines quickened her pace. She finally understood. Before she took Viego away, she now knew what W's words and that malicious smile on her face were all about.

Kazdel was a land of chaos. Every mercenary was wary of anyone but themselves. They might be crude, bold, and foolish, but they would never be like Viego, who so shamelessly exposed his curiosity. This was really hard to bear, especially for a quiet person like Ines.

So, when she brought Viego before Heavily, Ines truly sighed in relief in her heart. She turned and walked out of the tent without looking back.

Just let Heavily deal with those numerous and meaningless questions.

Anyway, he usually likes to ponder those meaningless things too.

"Hello, I'm Heavily." The red-haired mercenary extended a hand to Viego. "It's a pleasure to meet you."
