Viego in Arknights

Chapter 12: (VIA) Chapter 12: Viego, Married into a Wealthy Family?

"Hello, I'm Viego." Viego looked at the tall mercenary before him, a little surprised. "You don't look like a mercenary."

If one were to strip away Heavily's mercenary attire and weapons, he would actually look more like a scholar who had a fitness habit, or perhaps a teacher or a writer. If one had to say what made him different from the other mercenaries in the camp outside, it was his words, his actions, and his aura; they were all different.

Heavily's expression looked peaceful. Viego couldn't see the indifference or numbness common to the people of Kazdel in his eyes. In his few days of journeying in this other world, this was also the first time he had met someone like Heavily, who would greet him upon meeting and politely say, 'Hello, I'm very pleased to meet you.'

All these things combined made him seem unlike a Sarkaz mercenary—at least, not a simple one. He was a mercenary with ideas, with class, and possibly even with knowledge. Viego realized this, and at the same time, he noticed a book titled A History of Terran Wars lying on Heavily's cot.

So he appeared somewhat surprised.

"I'll take that as a compliment," Heavily smiled, looking at Viego and asking, "You want to join us?"

"Of course, after all, I still owe W money."

"May I ask why you owe her money? As far as I know, W shouldn't have many interpersonal relationships... Of course, it's also hard for mercenaries to have much savings, including me."

"She saved my life. I fell from the sky, landed in a battlefield, and W dragged me to a safe place. In her words... my life is worth a hundred thousand Lungmen Dollars?" Viego didn't mention the tyrannical clause about one question costing thirty thousand Lungmen Dollars.

It didn't really matter how much he owed. Viego wanted to join the mercenary group mainly because he was greedy for the fragment on W's body—and if he could confirm that Ines's body also had a fragment, then perhaps he was after the one on Ines's body as well. The fragments were, after all, the key to Viego's survival, and could also make him stronger. If he left the mercenary group, left W, Viego wasn't sure if he would be so lucky again, to meet a crazy woman like W who was willing to let him "suck" from her and hadn't actually tried to kill him while he was weak.

"I understand... However, I must tell you, we are about to set off for a very dangerous battlefield. You are very likely to die," Heavily said seriously. "If you give up on joining the mercenary group, I can help persuade W to either postpone or forgive the debt... At least, you won't have to follow her all the time."

"Viego, you are not a Sarkaz. You don't have to participate in the wars of the Sarkaz," Heavily's words were meaningful, carrying a hint of warning.

"I'm the type to repay my debts, Heavily. No matter what, W saved me." Viego shook his head, rejecting Heavily's proposal, then raised an eyebrow and smiled. "Besides, when a person dies, the debt is cancelled. Isn't that great too?"

"Well then…" Heavily sighed. "In that case, I will ask you a few simple questions next. I hope you can answer truthfully. If you are useful to the mercenary group, you can stay."

Viego nodded. "Okay."

"Then, first, briefly introduce your own combat specialties. For example, what kind of weapon are you good at using, or are you a Caster skilled in using Originium Arts?"

"I can use a longsword. As for Originium Arts… I can imbue my weapon with my… Originium Arts. As long as the wound is deep enough, it can be a one-hit kill."

"How deep is 'deep enough'?"

"About this long? It depends on the size of the enemy." Viego used his fingers to indicate a distance of about three to five centimeters, because he didn't know if the units of length in this other world were the same as the modern units he was familiar with.

"I see. Then, besides that… do you mind if I ask where you are from?"

Viego scratched his head. "Strictly speaking, I'm from Kamavia—it's a very distant kingdom. You've probably never heard of it."

"I really haven't heard of it…" Heavily was a little puzzled but still nodded and called Ines in. He didn't think Viego was lying, at most just hiding some part of his situation. But this was all too common in Kazdel. No one here would casually entrust their heart and all their trust to someone else. As for what Ines had said about "not being able to see Viego's shadow"... Heavily felt that things weren't as bad as Ines thought. Everyone has their own past; he did, Ines did, W did, so why couldn't Viego?

After some interaction, Heavily felt that Viego was not the kind of person who would pose a threat to the team. It could even be said that he was like a naive young master from a peaceful country or a noble family, who hadn't seen the world. Viego's body clearly lacked the high level of vigilance that people in Kazdel generally had towards the outside world.

"What is it?" Ines walked in with an expressionless face. She didn't want to see Viego at all right now. The moment she saw him, her ears would start ringing with a 'ten thousand whys.' She finally knew why W had been smiling so happily. He was really noisy.

"I've decided to let Viego stay."

"That's your decision. You don't need to ask for my opinion."

"His abilities might be more suitable for your team," Heavily said, wanting to know if Ines was willing to accept Viego. "Viego's ability is very suitable for silently eliminating enemies—if his claims are not exaggerated."

Another unstated reason that everyone knew was that placing Viego with Ines would make it more convenient for her to "monitor" him. Heavily trusted W's abilities, but he didn't trust her mental state at all. Putting Viego with W was like putting two unstable bombs together; who knew when they would explode. Viego was a newcomer, after all. There would always be a "probationary period," which was a very normal thing in every mercenary group.

"W will not agree," Ines shook her head.

"It's just for this one commission. I'll go talk to her, she'll accept it." Heavily didn't mind that Viego was right there and spoke bluntly, "If he can survive, then he is a trustworthy member."

Then, he looked at Viego. "Acting as a member of Ines's squad in the upcoming battle is also one of the conditions for you to join us. Can you accept that?"

"Of course, I have no objections," Viego raised an eyebrow.

"..." Ines was silent for a moment, nodded, turned around, and glanced at Viego. "Follow me. I hope you won't miss that woman too much."

"?" Viego was confused. Why does it sound like I'm a poor little man who's been cruelly abandoned, or a son-in-law who married into a rich family but whose heart already belongs to someone else? What a cheesy soap opera.

Viego shivered.
