Chapter 13: (VIA) Chapter 13: Isolde? Get the Hell Out!
Viego followed Ines out of the tent and asked, "One more question. I don't have a weapon. Who should I see about that?"
Ines was expressionless. "Go see Heavily."
"Then should I tell W that I'm leaving?"
"Go ask Heavily."
"So when are we leaving? Do I have to follow you the whole time? No one's going to arrest me as a spy or something, right? Will you wait for me? What if I don't know how to get to your location after I come out?"
"Go ask Heavily!"
"Is Heavily free right now? I just came out, wouldn't it be bad to go back in again?"
"Ugh…" Ines gritted her teeth, raising a hand to pinch her throbbing temple. She squeezed the words out through her teeth, her patience at its limit. "Shut up, Viego."
"Alright." Viego raised both hands in a French military salute. "Then I'll go find Heavily."
"Forget it. Come with me." Ines, thinking of the strangeness about Viego, changed her mind again. It wasn't a good idea to leave Viego and Heavily together for a long time. Although Heavily was nominally just a captain of the same rank as Ines, in reality, all the small teams in the mercenary company followed his command. At this critical juncture, as they were about to head to the location of the Babel commission and face a major battle, Heavily absolutely could not be affected in any way. If Viego was a man sent by that prince who was attempting to usurp the throne, then he would definitely try to influence Heavily and make the mercenary group's, and Babel's, operation fail...
Ines couldn't see Viego's "shadow," couldn't sense his heart, so she was very wary of this man. Naturally, she was unwilling to risk letting Viego and Heavily come into contact again.
Viego raised an eyebrow. "I thought Captain Ines would just pull my tongue out directly?"
"Don't try to test my limits, Viego." Ines gave the white-haired man a cold glance, her eyes filled with warning. "I don't know what your purpose is, but I will keep an eye on you, Viego."
"Uh…" Viego was taken aback. He didn't know why this woman was so wary of him. Did she think he was lusting after her body? But how could that be! He was obviously just lusting after the fragment inside her body!
Are all the people in Kazdel this unfriendly? Either lunatics or prickly hedgehogs? Looked at this way, Heavily seemed even less like a Kazdel native.
However… Viego pinched his chin, his thoughtful gaze drifting downwards. Are the legs of all the female mercenaries in Kazdel this long? Isn't this a leg-fetishist's paradise?!
"What are you looking at?" Ines's cold gaze shot over.
A pity I'm not a leg-fetishist. Viego regretfully looked away and said honestly, "Looking at your legs. Dressing like that, won't it increase the risk of injury on the battlefield?"
"W only wears a layer of black stockings on her legs. Why aren't you worried about her? In your perception, does that thing have a defense rating comparable to combat fatigues?" Ines sneered, but still explained to Viego, "Wearing heavy armor affects mobility. If you're not wearing heavy armor, then what you wear makes no difference. A sword slash or a crossbow bolt will still injure you. It's better to choose lighter clothing. Besides, I almost never participate in frontal combat, so I don't need very strong defense."
Got it, so she's a lightly-armored assassin. Viego nodded.
Ines led Viego back to the camp and found a straight sword in a box, tossing it to him. "Very few people in Kazdel use swords. We only have sabers here."
"Alright." Viego had no objections, catching the saber and slinging it on his back. "Where do I sleep tonight?"
"You don't have a tent?"
"When I was with W, I stayed in the same tent as her… I slept on the ground."
It seems that woman W isn't completely stupid after all, not letting a man of unknown origin like Viego run around the camp freely. Ines's slightly furrowed brows relaxed. She walked to the outside of the camp and said coldly, "Then tonight you'll stay by my side as well. Keep quiet, otherwise you can get lost."
"Alright, Captain Ines," Viego said obediently. He looked at Ines's back, lost in thought. Never gives a pleasant look, merciless with her words, but takes care of you with her actions while complaining—why does this feel so familiar? Could it be that… Ines is actually a three-noes tsundere?
Looked at this way, that foul-mouthed crazy cockroach woman W… is actually also a tsundere, just a different breed of foul-mouthed tsundere?
Could it be that the Sarkaz race are all tsunderes? Just like elves are all frigid, and succubi are all juice-squeezers, a similar kind of stereotypical racial setting?
A realization dawned on Viego. He felt he had discovered the fundamental truth of the world. But he didn't dare to say it out loud, much less tease Ines with it. Ines was not W, after all. They weren't familiar enough yet. If he rashly spouted such stupid pick-up lines, it was very likely this fierce woman would really pull his tongue out. Viego was still very good at grasping the sense of propriety and distance in human relationships. He knew what jokes he could make and what jokes he couldn't.
Viego followed Ines to a burning campfire outside the camp. Ines sat down, hugging her long legs, and just stared silently at the fire. Viego was a little puzzled as to why Ines would build a separate campfire outside the camp to be alone, but still chose to remain quiet.
Viego sat down and stared at the fire, his heart also a little melancholic. He thought of his full 1TB mobile hard drive, which was filled with precious treasures he had collected over many years. Now that he was in another world, he didn't know if his friend could take good care of that hard drive and inherit his collection…
Viego sighed in his heart, lowered his head, and looked at the inverted triangle-shaped hole in his chest through his clothes. He could feel the Ruination within his body craving to grow, craving to be filled, to be replenished. That hole was stirring restlessly. Something was gathering its strength within, just waiting for the Ruination in his body to provide it with "fuel."
The memories of the Ruined King were indeed affecting him. Viego tried his best not to think about those things, but the obsession that had lasted for a thousand years, from the former Ruined King, was still trying to invade his thoughts and his heart, trying to change his will, roaring at him: 'Find Isolde!!'
He had a feeling that at any moment he might blurt out a classic Ruined King quote like, "My love is lost forever, all I see is Ruin!"
"What are you thinking about?" a cold female voice sounded beside his ear.
Viego looked up and looked at Ines, who was still staring at the campfire with an expressionless face, as if she hadn't spoken at all. He smiled.
"Nothing much. Just thinking that a person shouldn't debase themselves for a love that isn't returned."
I, Viego, will absolutely not be a simp!
Whatever obsession, whatever Isolde, all of you, get the hell out!
