Warhammer 40k: Starting as a Rogue Trader

Chapter 152: Chapter 153: The Zerg? The Emperor's Biological Weapons?

Chapter 153: The Zerg? The Emperor's Biological Weapons?

Lucan also noticed that the way people looked at Kerrigan had changed.

Although Kerrigan had returned to her human form, quite a few people on the bridge had witnessed her special transformation. For those who knew, it was difficult to see her as just a little girl anymore. Lucan gave a strict order that everything they had seen was to be kept secret, and no one dared to disobey his command.

Lucan once again connected to his warp projection.

The dark sun was calm again.

Lucan had not personally witnessed the clash between the Emperor and the Four Gods, but the influence of their divine power had completely vanished. All warp creatures within sight had been annihilated by the collateral power of the Emperor. No warp entity dared to approach at this moment.

Although the conflict between the Emperor and the Four was brief, it had been sensed by various powerful beings across the galaxy.

Lucan's call to the Emperor was met with only a vague response.

The Emperor said that the avatars of the Four had all suffered irreversible damage. Perhaps they were now even wary of each other. However, their mortal followers, renegades, and even his own sons who had betrayed humanity might come to cause trouble for Lucan.

The Emperor himself had entered a temporary period of suppression after this outburst. But after venting this excess power of faith, once the suppression was complete, He might have more power to influence the material universe. The power of faith could create unparalleled strength, but the closer one got to godhood, the more one lost their humanity.

When Lucan wanted to ask more, the Emperor no longer responded. Even with Lucan sharing the burden, it had still been an immense strain on the Emperor.

Lucan found that his Xel'Naga projection was still tinged with a faint golden light. He was clearly "stuffed"... even after regaining consciousness, he had not finished consuming the power he had devoured. But this was perfect. Lucan could use this unspent divine power to perform some miracles on the Emperor's behalf, which would be exceptionally effective for winning the hearts and minds of the people. Rather than letting this power of faith be purified into nothing, it was better to use it for more practical purposes.

Disconnecting from the Xel'Naga, Lucan returned to the material universe.

He dressed and returned to the bridge. Having been unconscious for five days, he was eager to know the current state of the war on Malfi. Ian and the others, having heard of Lucan's coma, had returned to the warship. Seeing him awake, they all breathed a sigh of relief.

"My Lord, Glydus has been captured," Ian reported. "We did not kill her. We are awaiting your judgment."

"So quickly?"

After all, the enemy's numbers were vast. Lucan had thought that even if things went smoothly, the war would last for some time.

Holter stepped forward to explain.

"We also found it incredible. The biological weapons you deployed were being held back by the enemy, but then they suddenly turned into living bombs. The power released in the explosions even contained the golden holy light of the God-Emperor... It's unbelievable. There has never been a precedent of xenos receiving the Emperor's blessing. My Lord, could it be that these biological weapons were also granted to you by the Emperor?"

Hearing this, Lucan understood. Kerrigan's act of sharing the psychic energy had brought a special effect to the Swarm. The Zerg, their bodies filled with a massive amount of divine power from the hive mind, had literally turned into holy light bombs.

But while gaining this damage bonus, the losses to the Zerg were also extremely severe. An ordinary Zerg, even with its powerful body, could hardly withstand this power. To share the burden of Kerrigan and Lucan, the number of Zerg on Malfi had been reduced by ninety percent, with only a few of the strongest surviving.

The Zerg on the planet Char had also suffered terribly. Zerg all over the planet had either exploded from being unable to contain the massive psychic energy or had been completely incinerated from the inside out by the Emperor's power. The total loss of Zerg on Char reached seventy percent. Fortunately, their bodies could be recycled by the creep. There was some loss of biomass, but with time, the Swarm could return to its original scale.

To produce special Zerg like Abathur more quickly, Lucan ordered the Leviathans in orbit to begin colonizing other planets.

The surviving Zerg had also undergone a different kind of change. Unfortunately, the number of these special Zerg was fixed; the power could not be inherited through hatching.

"My Lord... I think you need to see those xenos for yourself," Holter said, a troubled look on his face. "The bio-magi have no idea what to make of their changes."

Seeing Holter's predicament, Lucan also became curious about the current situation on Malfi.

He took a shuttle down to the planet's surface. The large-scale warfare had mostly subsided. The members of the alliance were in the process of seizing Malfi's various assets. The nobles who had put up a final, futile resistance were being exterminated in the most brutal fashion under the dual verdict of the Inquisition and the Ecclesiarchy. All their possessions were naturally being confiscated by the Dynasty. The wealth these nobles had accumulated over hundreds of years was quite considerable.

But there were still some who had slipped through the net, hiding in the dark corners of the hive, putting up a desperate struggle. Without logistical support, however, they could no longer make any significant waves.

Under the protection of a squad of Night Sentinels, Lucan took an elevator down to the lower hive.

But the scene that greeted him left even Lucan at a loss for what to do.

The surviving Zerg, still following Kerrigan's orders, had not harmed the civilians. As long as Kerrigan, or special Zerg like Zagara, were alive, the other Zerg would not devolve into beasts that only knew how to kill.

The power of the Emperor still flowed through the bodies of these surviving Zerg, beneath their dark purple carapaces, causing their bodies to be etched with a layer of golden patterns.

A large number of lower hive residents were gathered around these surviving Zerg. They did not seem to fear these terrifying-looking creatures; instead, their faces were filled with reverence. In the end, it was these Zerg who had saved them. The civilians who had been forced to become cannon fodder... without these Zerg, few of them would have survived.

Many Ecclesiarchy priests were also gathered nearby. Although these were xenos, whose very existence was forbidden by the Imperium, their current state left the priests unsure of what to do. The blessing of the God-Emperor had appeared on xenos...

Some of the bolder lower hive civilians even approached and gently stroked the creatures. The order not to harm civilians meant the Zerg made no aggressive moves.

The massive form of Zagara was also quietly being guarded by the Swarm. She looked at the humans of this world, her eyes full of curiosity. This was the first time she had ever seen humans worshipping Zerg... In the StarCraft story, even after Kerrigan became a god, the relationship between humans and Zerg was at best a state of non-aggression.

And this power of faith, which lingered temporarily in her body, had actually further strengthened her physical power.

"By the Emperor, were you truly sent by the Emperor to save us?"

A great many of the underhive civilians thought this way. The power of the Emperor could not be faked by anyone. Their faith in the Emperor made them feel a certain closeness to these Zerg. The reaction of the priests only further confirmed the authenticity of this power in their minds.

"My Lord! Why have you come here! The nearby enemies have not been completely cleared out!"

The Raiders on guard immediately cleared a path and moved to protect Lucan.

The priests all looked toward Lucan. Perhaps this Living Saint of the Emperor would give them an answer.

Zagara, who had been in the midst of the Swarm, saw Lucan. The subordinate relationship forcibly bound by the System made her walk toward him.

The soldiers raised their weapons, aiming at Zagara.

But Zagara simply bowed her head to Lucan.

"Master, follower of the great Queen of Blades, Zagara awaits your command. The Swarm has completed its mission!"
